  3. This README describes a 32-bit video device driver for the Orchid
  4. Fahrenheit graphics accelerator video adapters.
  5.  
  6. This display driver takes advantage of the hardware acceleration
  7. capabilities of the chip sets used on the Orchid Fahrenheit adapters.
  8.  
  9. The display driver conforms to the OS/2* 32-bit flat memory model and is
  10. designed to function as a 32-bit PM display driver under the OS/2 32-bit
  11. graphics engine subsystem.
  12.  
  13. THIS VIDEO DEVICE DRIVER IS DESIGNED TO BE USED WITH ORCHID FAHRENHEIT
  14. GRAPHICS ACCELERATORS. USE WITH OTHER GRAPHICS ACCELERATORS IS NOT SUPPORTED
  15. AND MAY DAMAGE SYSTEM SOFTWARE OR HARDWARE. ORCHID IS NOT RESPONSIBLE FOR USE
  16. OF THIS PRODUCT WITH NON-SUPPORTED HARDWARE.

  19. Supported Features
  20. ------------------
  21. The S3 display driver supports the following resolutions/colors and OS/2
  22. full-screen columns/rows:
  23.  
  24.      640 x  480 x 256 colors
  25.      800 x  600 x 256 colors
  26.     1024 x  768 x 256 colors
  27.     1280 x 1024 x 256 colors  ('805 based adapters only w/2MB video memory)

  29.     OS/2 full screen 132,25
  30.     OS/2 full screen 132,43

  32. It also supports the following features:
  33.  
  34. *   OS/2 PM Palette Manager
  35. *   Software Motion Video
  36. *   Static mode change

  38.  
  39. Orchid Fahrenheit Display Driver Restrictions
  40. ---------------------------------------------
  41.  
  42. *   A minimum of 1MB video memory is required.
  43.  
  44.     The Orchid Fahrenheit display driver has been tested on and supports the
  45.     following Orchid adapters with the chip set indicated in parentheses:
  46.  
  47.     Orchid Fahrenheit 1280      (911A)
  48.     Orchid Fahrenheit 1280      (911B)
  49.     Orchid Fahrenheit 1280      (924)
  50.     Orchid Fahrenheit 1280-D    (911A, 911B)

  53.     Orchid Fahrenheit 1280 Plus (801)

  55.     Orchid Fahrenheit VA/VLB            (805)

  59. Installation Instructions
  60. -------------------------
  61. NOTE:  Do NOT install this OS/2 2.1 display driver on earlier versions of
  62.        OS/2.
  63.  
  64.        The OS/2 ATTRIB command is used during installation.  If you elected
  65.        not to install the OS/2 System Utilities or you have deleted the
  66.        ATTRIB command you must use Selective Install to restore it before
  67.        continuing.
  68.  
  69. To install the Orchid Fahrenheit display driver:
  70.  
  71. 1.  Place this diskette into drive A (or any other diskette drive).
  72.  
  73. 2.  Open an OS/2 full-screen or window session.
  74.  
  75. 3.  At the OS/2 command prompt, enter the following command:
  76.  
  77.             A:S3INST A: C:
  78.  
  79.     where:  A: is the diskette drive
  80.             C: is the startup drive (where OS/2 2.1 is installed)
  81.  
  82.     This command will copy all necessary files to the OS/2 drive.
  83.  
  84. 4.  Perform a shutdown and restart the system.
  85.  
  86. ======================================================================
  87. NOTE:  For PREINSTALLED systems only, omit steps 5 - 8 and perform the
  88.        following steps:
  89.  
  90.        a) Open the Preinstalled Essentials folder.
  91.        b) Open the Configurations Tools folder.
  92.        c) Open the Configure Preinstalled System object.
  93.        d) Change the display setting to SVGA mode.
  94.        e) Perform a shutdown and restart the system.
  95.        f) Open the OS/2 System folder.
  96.        g) Open the System Setup folder.
  97.        h) Open the System object. Select the desired screen
  98.           resolution on the Screen page of the System Settings
  99.           notebook, and then close the notebook.
  100.        i) Perform a shutdown and restart the system.
  101.  
  102. This completes the S3 driver installation for preinstalled systems.
  103. ======================================================================
  104.  
  105. 5.  Open an OS/2 full-screen or window session.
  106.  
  107. 6.  Run the Display Driver Installation (DSPINSTL) utility program.
  108.  
  109.     When the Display Driver Install window appears, S3 should be the
  110.     default choice.  (To confirm this default, check the Primary Display
  111.     check box and select OK.  This will display a pop-up window indicating
  112.     the choices for the Super Video Graphics Array.  S3 should be
  113.     highlighted.)
  114.  
  115.     Select OK.  You will be prompted to insert the source directory
  116.     (installation diskette).  Insert the diskette and select OK again.
  117.     After a moment, you will be asked to accept the preselected Install
  118.     Using Defaults option or to select the Install Using Display Adapter
  119.     Utility Program option.
  120.  
  121.     DSPINSTL determines the hardware configuration by creating the
  122.     SVGADATA.PMI file on the startup drive where the OS2 directory is
  123.     located.  If this file has not been created, the adapter will not be
  124.     supported.
  125.  
  126. 7.  When DSPINSTL has completed, open the OS/2 System folder, open the
  127.     System Setup folder, and then open the System object.  The Screen page
  128.     of the Settings notebook will list all the supported resolutions for
  129.     your configuration.  Select one and then close the notebook.
  130.  
  131. 8.  Perform a shutdown and restart the system.
  132.  
  133.  
  134. Restrictions
  135. ------------
  136. 1.  While using WordPerfect** for Windows 5.2 you might find that an
  137.     incorrect font is being selected.  If this occurs:
  138.  
  139.     a.  Quit WordPerfect.
  140.  
  141.     b.  Edit the \OS2\MDOS\WINOS2\WIN.INI file using the OS/2 System
  142.         Editor.
  143.  
  144.     c.  Locate the "ìfont┘" section in the file.
  145.  
  146.     d.  Change the entries:
  147.  
  148.           FROM             TO

  150.         symbolg.fon      symbole.fon
  151.         helvg.fon        helve.fon
  152.         tmsrg.fon        tmsre.fon

  155.     e.  Save the file and open WordPerfect.
  156.  
  157. 2.  A repaint problem may occur when running EXCEL** 4.0 for WINDOWS
  158.     seamlessly.  If this occurs change to full screen.
  159.  
  160. 3.  Do not select the 1280x1024x256 non-interlaced option with the Diamond
  161.     Stealth adapters.
  162.  
  163. 4.  Action bar pull-downs may be blacked out when multiple WIN-OS2 seamless
  164.     applications are launched in separate VDM sessions simultaneously.
  165.     Launch each application separately or simultaneously in the same VDM
  166.     session.
  167.

  169. New SETVGA Procedure
  170. --------------------
  171. Use the following procedure instead of the SETVGA command if it is
  172. necessary for you to return to VGA mode.  If your display is out of sync
  173. you can follow this procedure after starting OS/2 from the Installation
  174. Diskette and escaping to the command prompt.
  175.  
  176. Case 1: You installed OS/2 from diskettes
  177.  
  178. 1.  Be sure RSPDSPI.EXE is in the \OS2\INSTALL\ directory.  If it is, go to
  179.     step 2.  If it is not, insert the Orchid Fahrenheit Driver Diskette and
  180.     using the UNPACK.EXE from the diskette, unpack and copy the correct
  181.     RSPDSPI.EXE file 
  182.  
  183.         unpack a:\tools /n:rspdspi.exe
  184.  
  185.     Insure the file c:\os2\install\rspdspi.exe exists
  186.  
  187.     To unpack the UNPACK.EXE utility from the driver diskette first
  188.     rename the OS/2 2.1 UNPACK.EXE to UNPACK.RTL
  189.  
  190.         ren c:\os2\unpack.exe unpack.rtl
  191.  
  192.     Then run UNPACK2.EXE (from the driver diskette)
  193.  
  194.         a:\unpack2.exe a:\unpack
  195.  
  196.     It is important you use the RSPDSPI.EXE from the Orchid Fahrenheit
  197.     Driver Diskette. The RSPDSPI.EXE from the retail version of OS/2
  198.     2.1 will not work correctly.
  199.  
  200. 2.  Enter the following commands:
  201.  
  202.     C:
  203.     CD C:\OS2\INSTALL
  204.     RSPDSPI /PK:VGA /SK:NONE /S:A:\ /T:C:
  205.  
  206.     where:  A: is the diskette drive you use to install OS/2
  207.             C: is the startup drive (where OS/2 2.1 is installed)
  208.

  210. Case 2: You installed OS/2 from CD-ROM or a LAN
  211.  
  212. 1.  Be sure RSPDSPI.EXE is in the \OS2\INSTALL\ directory.  If it is, go to
  213.     step 2.  If it is not, insert the Orchid Fahrenheit Driver Diskette and
  214.     using the UNPACK.EXE from the diskette, unpack and copy the correct
