- Installing the Driver
- ---------------------
- 1. Run the INSTALL program for your ATI video adapter (found on your original
- ATI diskette #1) under DOS or in a Full Screen DOS session (under OS/2)
- and check the "Power-Up Configuration" to ensure that you have selected
- an appropriate monitor type. OS/2 requires that the 640x480 resolution be
- configured for the IBM default 60Hz vertical refresh rate. Other
- resolutions may be configured at any vertical refresh. Note that only
- those modes which have been enabled in the power-up configuration will
- be available under OS/2.
-
- 2. Check The Minimized Window Viewer to see if you have any WIN-OS/2 or
- DOS sessions iconized. Close them all as the install may not work
- if a WIN-OS/2 session is running.
-
- 3. Before proceeding, ensure that you've unpacked the OS2V12.ZIP file into
- a directory containing LOADER.EXE and LHARC.EXE, then run the LOADER
- program to install the driver files. A README file containing
- instructions for this procedure is included in OS2V12.ZIP.
-
- 4. Open an OS/2 window or full screen session and type
-
- DSPINSTL
-
- then press the enter key.
-
- 5. When the Display Driver Install panel appears, select Primary Display
- and click OK to bring up a list of choices. Select the option for
- ATI mach8/mach32. If you don't see this option, ensure that the
- ATIM32.DSC file is located in your \OS2\INSTALL directory.
-
- 6. When the source directory panel appears, change the source directory
- to C:\MACH_OS2 (substitute your OS/2 boot drive for C: if appropriate).
- Then click the Install button.
-
- 7. When the drivers have been installed, a message will appear, indicating
- that changes have been made to your configuration. Click OK, EXIT the
- OS/2 session, and Shut Down OS/2.
-
- 8. When you start OS/2 again, the ATI PM driver will first come up in a
- 640x480, 256 colors mode. Use the following steps to change the screen
- resolutions or number of colors:
-
- a. Open 'OS/2 System' icon.
- b. Open 'System Setup' icon.
- c. Open 'System' icon.
- b. Select the 'Screen' tab.
- e. Select the desired resolution and number of colors from the list.
- f. Point to the title-bar icon and double click to close the window.
- g. Shut down and restart your system.

- NOTES and Bug Fixes
- ===================
-
- . 8514-ULTRA.
- -------------
- Initialization of the 800x600x256 mode on an 8514-ULTRA requires direct
- access to the 8514-ULTRA ROM.
-
- a. On Micro Channel machines, the ROM address for the 8514-ULTRA is fixed
- at C680. This physical address is not accessible directly through OS/2.
- Since initialization of the 800x600x256 mode requires direct access to
- the 8514-ULTRA ROM, this mode is not available on MCA systems.
-
- b. ISA machine users : if you can change the location of the 8514-ULTRA ROM
- (using the INSTALL program on ATI disk #1; Set Power Up Configuration),
- please set it to one of C800, C900, CA00, CB00,.....,etc. The ROM must
- be located at a 4K page boundary (ie at a hex address that ends in "00"),
- to be accessible under OS/2. Unless the ROM is accessible, the
- 800x600x256 mode cannot be initialized.
-
- . Switching from WINOS2 full screen directly to full screen dos, os/2.
- ----------------------------------------------------------------------
- Gives a very dim screen on 64K color modes. This is now fixed.
-
- . PM : Open System setup, menus are too slow
- ------------------------------------------
- This has been speeded up by a factor of two.
-

-
- Extra Notes
- -------------
- . Remember that you must close all WIN-OS/2 sessions or the install will fail.
-
- . RUNNING DOS EGA/VGA APPLICATIONS UNDER OS/2 ON GRAPHICS ULTRA +/PRO
-
- DOS graphics applications that run in any of the EGA or VGA planar modes
- listed below can not run in a DOS window session under OS/2. There is no
- separate VGA memory on the display adapter to virtualize the VGA graphics
- mode drawing in an accelerator drawing mode. Therefore, please use these
- programs in a DOS full screen session.
-
- mode 0dh 320x200 16 colors
- mode 0eh 640x200 16 colors
- mode 0fh 640x350 2 colors
- mode 10h 640x350 16 colors
- mode 11h 640x480 2 colors
- mode 12h 640x480 16 colors
-
- These modes cannot be supported as vga memory is generally not available
- when hardware accelerator features are enabled. We can only enable these
- features at a big penalty in performance, so they will not be enabled.
-
- . RUNNING THE DISPLAY ADAPTER'S TEST PROGRAM
-
- The display adapter diagnostics program should only be run in a DOS full
- screen session. Also, do not attempt to switch to PM desktop or other tasks
- in the middle of the diagnostic, otherwise the desktop might be corrupted.
-
- . CORRECTING PROBLEMS AFTER INSTALLATION.
-
- If, after installation, you are unable to start OS/2 2.1, please consult
- Page 128 of the OS/2 2.1 supplied Installation Guide :
-
- Resetting Display Adapter to VGA (SETVGA)
-
- Ignore any errors that you may get at the end of the procedure. The
- SETVGA.CMD script assumes that an SVGA driver is installed and will complain
- if it fails to delete it.
-
- . CHANGING SCREEN RESOLUTIONS IN PM SYSTEM SETUP.
-
- After clicking on the resolution you wish, close the system window by double
- clicking on its top left icon. This will write your settings to disk. Your
- changes will not take effect until the system window is closed and you reboot
- your machine.
-
- . Hanging with DRAM cards
-
- We have had a problem with hanging DRAM cards. This is now fixed, but dram
- card users may experience slower performance than vram card owners.
-
-
-
- Current known problems and limitations
- --------------------------------------
-
- 1. DIGITAL VIDEO PLAYER. When playing Ultimotion video clips in 64K color
- mode, the picture comes up as mostly blue. Playing Indeo video clips will
- hang the system. This is due to improper handling of high and true colour
- modes by the OS/2 Digital Video Player. Please switch to 256 color mode to
- play these videos and wait for IBM's fix.
-
- 2. WP for OS/2, 123 for OS/2. These two programs are confirmed to have
- problems running in 64K color mode. Please switch to 256 color mode to use
- them and wait for the fix from their respective manufacturers.
-
- 3. 640x480 IN 70HZ REFRESH RATE. OS/2 INSTALL and the generic VGA driver
- have a problem displaying 640x480 at a 70Hz refresh rate. Change the refresh
- rate to the IBM default of 60Hz to install OS/2, as noted in step 1 of
- "Installing the Driver". Note that this is a limitation of OS/2, and ONLY
- applies to the 640x480 resolution. Other resolutions may be configured at
- any vertical refresh rate.
-
- 4. WIN-OS/2 CLOCK IN DIGITAL DISPLAY. When the clock is running in digital
- mode without a title bar, switching to any full screen task and back will
- corrupt the clock display. This bug is still under investigation. A
- temporary workaround is to use the clock in analog mode or in digital mode
- with a title bar. Refreshing the clock window will also correct the display.
-
- 5. WIN-OS/2 CLOCK AND OS/2 DIGITAL VIDEO PLAYER. When playing a video clips
- with a seamless WIN-OS/2 CLOCK running at the same time, some artifacts may
- show on screen. This bug is still under investigation. Close the seamless
- WIN-OS/2 clock before using the digital video player.
-
- 6. OS/2 LOCKS ON SHUTDOWN. Periodically OS/2 may lock during shutdown before
- displaying the "Shutdown is completed" message. This is a documented problem
- with Presentation Manager. The following appears in the OS/2 README file:
-
- o During a system shutdown, there might be
- times when the "Shutdown is completed"
- message is not displayed. If this happens,
- wait until all disk activity is complete,
- then power off the system.
-
- 7. OS/2 SELECTIVE INSTALL REPORTS THE 8514/A DRIVER INSTALLED. The Selective
- Install feature of OS/2 actually searches the hardware in the system, and
- detects the 8514/A compatibility of the ATI accelerators. Selective Install
- will report the current driver as being "8514/A", even after you've installed
- the ATI OS/2 drivers.
-
- 8. WRONG DRAWINGS ON OVERLAPPED WINDOWS.
- Running multiple seamless windows sessions could cause drawing on
- overlapping windows to be wrong. Problem is currently under investigation.
- Refreshing the problem window will clear the problem.
-
- 9. OUT OF SYNC MONITORS, VGA, AND MACH32. (640x480 MUST BE AT 60Hz)
- To run the OS/2 VGA driver for the MACH32 card, you MUST use the ATI
- INSTALL program to select a 60Hz (IBM Default) refresh rate for the
- 640x480 resolution.
-
- If not, the monitor will be out of sync. After the first time you boot
- OS/2 in VGA mode, you can reset the refresh rate to any value your
- monitor supports, but every time you run DSPINSTL, you must reset the
- refresh rate to 60Hz.
