- GoldED 2.42.G1114 GAMMA RELEASE
- ----------------------------------------------------------------------
-
- Welcome to this GAMMA release of GoldED!
-
- This version is released as a so-called "gamma", as opposed to a beta
- or alpha. A gamma could be described as a kind of publicly available
- beta, except that it is expected to be relatively bug-free. This
- release is basically identical to the GoldED 2.41 for DOS release,
- except for various internal source code rewrites, rearrangements and
- various fixes to support 32-bit OS/2 and 16-bit DOS protected mode C++
- compilers. There are of course also some new features :-)
-
- The gamma is available in three different versions: The regular DOS
- version, a DOS protected mode version and finally an OS/2 version. The
- release archives are listed below. Read the OS2_P16.DOC document about
- the differences between the regular DOS version and the two new ones.
-
- The gamma archives are designed to contain the equivalent of the
- GED0241E.ARJ (GoldED 2.41 for DOS) "executables and simple cfg"
- archive. For full documentation, more advanced configuration file
- examples etc., please get the GED0241D.ARJ ("documentation and
- advanced cfg") archive. To avoid accidentally overwriting your
- existing configuration, the simple configuration files have been moved
- into the archive SIMP_CFG.ZIP.
-
- The gamma executables are drop-in-able with your existing GoldED
- configuration. Well, actually I haven't tried it, but I can't think of
- any reason why it shouldn't work.
-
- Registration: As this is a public gamma and not a beta, no beta key or
- registration key is required to run the program. However, you still
- have to register GoldED if you use it beyond the evaluation period,
- just like the DOS version. If you have already registered the DOS
- version, you can upgrade your key for a small fee to make it work with
- the OS/2 version too. There is no upgrade fee for the DOS/P16 version
- if you are already registered for the standard DOS version. See the
- order forms for more details and pricing of the DOS and OS/2 versions.
-
- Some notes about the history and status of this release:
-
- The gamma is a straightforward bugfix/feature-add update of the A0701
- alpha version that "leaked", and is based on proven and tested code
- from a time before I started work on JAM and Goldbase support and the
- really big code rewrites. I won't go into details about how or why the
- alpha got out, let's just say that it's a good thing it was as bugfree
- as it was.
-
- Contrary to the alpha, this gamma is fully supported. Should there be
- any serious bugs, I will, if possible, release bugfix patches fast.
- The gamma source is a separate "branch" of development (see below), so
- bugfixing won't be delayed because I'm working on something in it.
-
- As mentioned above, the gamma is a separate branch of development,
- meaning that it is not part of the current development effort. The
- version I am currently working on, _with_ JAM and Goldbase support,
- has large scale code rewrites, including a new object-oriented
- "msgbase engine". It is still too unstable and untested to be
- released, even as an alpha. There is much work to do yet. When I am
- satisfied that it works well enough on my system, it will be released
- for general beta testing (after limited alpha testing to zap the
- inevitable oops-nasties), and perhaps later as a gamma.
-
- Version 2.42 is reserved for the "old branch" gammas/patch updates.
- The final version number of the current development will be 2.50. I
- hope it will be possible to finalize 2.50 for full public release with
- updated manuals etc. before the end of 1993, but I can't guarantee it.
-
- I hope you like these new releases!
