  21. This package is a "wide beta" of the Maximus bulletin board package.
  22. By "wide beta", we mean that this file is only distributed by a
  23. limited number of sites, and the package does NOT include a "New
  24. SysOp" installation package, nor does it include any information
  25. other than an "update" document.  To install Max 2.01wb, you MUST
  26. have Maximus 2.00 already installed on your system.

  28. Please read through this entire document before attempting to
  29. install this version of Maximus.

  32. Distribution Restrictions
  33. ─────────────────────────

  35. This software is still of a beta nature, so this file is distributed
  36. on a restricted basis.  Although you may privately distribute this
  37. file to whomever you please, this archive is only available for
  38. public distribution from a limited number of Maximus support sites.
  39. You may not place this file in an area for public download, and you
  40. may not make it available for public file request.  It _IS_
  41. permissable to pass this file around privately to others, but it
  42. must not be made available for public consumption.

  45. except an official Maximus support site, please leave a message to
  46. the system operator and mention these restrictions.

  49. Overview of Changes
  50. ───────────────────
  51.  
  52. Max 2.01wb serves as a minor upgrade for Max 2.0, since it
  53. incorporates a number of bug fixes.  However, 2.01wb also includes
  54. a number of new features, including:
  55.  
  56. * Internal support for the FrontDoor nodelist format.  Max can now
  57.   directly read the nodelist files used by FD 2.0x and FD 2.1x,
  58.   so FD users no longer have to create a separate nodelist.
  59.  
  60. * Internal support for the Version7 nodelist, as used by
  61.   BinkleyTerm 2.50 and above.  Users of the V7 nodelist will
  62.   realize a significant space savings over the older V6
  63.   format.
  64.  
  65. * Max can now use the userlist capabilities of both the Version7
  66.   and the FD nodelists to provide name lookups in netmail areas.
  67.   If you use V7 or FD, a FIDOUSER.LST is no longer required.
  68.  
  69. * Maximus-OS/2 and utilities are now produced under WATCOM C 8.5.
  70.   In addition, all of the OS/2 utilities now have a "p" appended to
  71.   the executable name, allowing both Max-DOS and Max-OS/2 systems to
  72.   be run from the same directory.

  74. * Improved multitasker detection for DOS.
  75.  
  76. * Support for the FD 2.1x "CALLER.nnn" interface file.
  77.  
  78. * Major performance improvements for FB, especially on
  79.   CD-ROM drives.
  80.  
  81. * Commands on the Browse menu will now "mirror" the equivalent
  82.   commands on your message menu.

  84. * A new "Global High Bit" keyword for non-English systems.

  86. * Improved handling for 4D point systems using multiple addresses.

  88. * A selectable default origin address for each individual netmail area.
  89.  
  90. * New "Toggle Kludge Display" and "Unreceive Message" commands
  91.   on the message menu.
  92.  
  93. * A "[download]" MECCA token.  This allows the sysop to specify a
  94.   full path and filename to be downloaded, without using [menu_cmd
  95.   download] (which relies on the file being in one of the file
  96.   areas).

  98. * A new status display for the QWK mail packer.
  99.  
  100. * A definable PROTOCOL.MAX file for each task.
  101.  
  102. * A keyword to permit single-word names, even for the "real name"
  103.   logon prompt.
  104.  
  105. * Menu titles can now include "%" characters, such as
  106.   "Title        MAIN (%t mins left)".

  109. In addition, a number of problems with Max 2.0/release have been
  110. corrected.
  111.  
  112. FOR A FULL LIST OF CHANGES, PLEASE READ MAX201B.NEW IN ITS ENTIRETY.
  113. Both bugfixes and information on new features can be found in this
  114. file.
  115.  
  116. However, since this software is a "wide beta" version, the accuracy
  117. and correctness of all components within cannot be guaranteed.  If
  118. you are running Maximus in a mission-critical environment, use this
  119. update at your own risk.  Users who are currently licensed to use
  120. Maximus in a commercial environment may use this upgrade at no
  121. charge, but you, the user, assume the entire liability for using
  122. this software on your system.

  124. Maximus 2.00 is still the current supported version, so if you are
  125. having problems with 2.01wb, the suggested course of action is to
  126. convert back to 2.00.  However, we are still interested in receiving
  127. problem reports for the wide beta version; for more information,
  128. please see "Problem Reporting", below.

  131. Installation
  132. ────────────

  134. In most cases, installation of 2.01wb will be a drop-in replacement.
  135. First, copy all of the executables into your Maximus directory. Also
  136. make sure to copy the new MAX.OVL, or else problems may result.
  137.  
  138. OS/2 users should first copy MSGAPI.DLL to a directory on your
  139. LIBPATH (usually C:\OS2\DLL) and also ensure that all older copies
  140. of MSGAPI.DLL are replaced with the new one.
  141.  
  142. Next, if you wish to upgrade to a new version of the language file,
  143. copy ENGLISH.MAD to the \MAX\LANG directory.  Note that 2.01wb is
  144. still compatible with old Max 2.00 language files.  If you decide to
  145. use the new ENGLISH.MAD, run "MAID ENGLISH" from the language
  146. directory.

  148. Next, change back to the \MAX directory and run "SILT MAX".
  149.  
  150. This completes the installation.  However, the new features in
  151. 2.01wb must be added manually.  For more information on features,
  152. please see MAX201B.NEW.

  155. Problem Reporting
  156. ─────────────────

  158. If you encounter a problem with the wide beta version of Maximus,
  159. you are encouraged to submit a problem report in the MUFFIN echomail
  160. conference, by netmail to 1:249/106, or by leaving a message on the
  161. author's BBS.  Commenting on 2.01wb problems elsewhere would be
  162. inappropriate, especially since 2.01wb is not an official release
  163. version.
  164.  
  165. When filing a problem report, please ensure that you do the
  166. following:
  167.  
  168. 1) State that you are using version 2.01wb.  Without a version
  169.    number, tracking down your problem becomes difficult.
  170.  
  171. 2) Submit a detailed explanation of the problem.  "It's broke,
  172.    fix it" problem reports will be discarded.
  173.  
  174. 3) Try to duplicate the problem with a minimal configuration.  If
  175.    you can show an example of the problem in one message area,
  176.    or cause a feature to break by changing only one control
  177.    file item, mention this in your problem report.
  178.  
  179. 3) PROVIDE ALL NECESSARY MATERIALS REQUIRED TO REPRODUCE THE
  180.    PROBLEM.  Relevant control files, area definitions and batch
  181.    files should be included where appropriate.
