  5. The Fontographer 4.1 Demo Version allows you to explore most of the
  6. functionality of Fontographer 4.1 with the following exceptions:

  8. 1. Please note that you cannot "Save" or "Save As" in this version.

  10. 2. You also cannot "Export" or "Generate Font Files".
  11.  
  12. 3. "Copy" does not copy to the clipboard, so you cannot copy
  13. anything out of this version into any other program.

  34. Minimum System requirements: Windows 3.1 with 32s v1.3;  6 MB 
  35. RAM; 5 MB HD space.

  39. If you notice that Fontographer's sounds preferences is greyed out, 
  40. this is because you either don't have a sound board, or the board you 
  41. have is not asychronous.

  45. In characters with "counters" (like "o"), where the outside path should 
  46. go clockwise and the other should be COUNTERclockwise, beware: if both 
  47. paths go in the same direction, the character will be solid black, 
  48. with no white center. To avoid unpleasant surprises like this, check 
  49. your path directions -- or, use Fontographer's useful, time-saving 
  50. function, "Correct path direction".
  51.

  54. When autotracing a bitmap, particularly a signature, it is possible 
  55. to overflow the buffer. If your trace has lines sticking out all 
  56. over it, undo it, undo the paste, and go back and break the bitmap up 
  57. into sections. Then paste the sections into individual character cells, 
  58. and trace.

  62. The Control key causes a demagnified move -- but it is also used for 
  63. other key combinations. If you find, for example, that you want to 
  64. temporarily switch to the arrow tool and drag-select an object, when 
  65. you start moving the mouse it will go VERY slowly. As long as the 
  66. Control key was depressed before you started dragging, you can let 
  67. go of it and the arrow tool will still be selected -- which will 
  68. move a lot faster!

  72. Since certain characters (such as the curly quotes) don't exist in some 
  73. Windows system fonts, when you type these characters into a field which 
  74. uses that font (such as AutoKern/Advanced/Which characters), you will 
  75. see only bars for your text. The characters will still get kerned, 
  76. they just can't show up in the text field.

  80. Your custom-named characters, and a few others which are not visually 
  81. represented, will appear as a double asterisk (**) in the Font Window 
  82. (when viewing by Character).

  86. PRINTING WITH FONTOGRAPHER'S PRINT COMMAND
  87.  
  88. If you have difficulty printing via Fontographer's "Print" command, 
  89. then you most likely have a print driver that isn't 100% Windows 
  90. compatible, or you don't have the proper fonts installed. Below are 
  91. some tips to help you print successfully.
  92.  
  93. -    Install Arial: Fontographer depends on the font "Arial" for 
  94.     most of its printing. You should install this font from your 
  95.     Windows disks if it is not already installed.
  96.  
  97. -    Always print a test page: When you install your print driver, 
  98.     you should print a test page if the installer prompts you to 
  99.     do so. This will test the basic operation of the print driver. 
  100.     If you're running Windows95, the test page should contain about 
  101.     half a page of information about your printer. If you only see 
  102.     a small graphic at the top of the page, or less than one-third 
  103.     of a page of information, then your driver probably isn't 100% 
  104.     Windows compatible.
  105.  
  106. -    Choose a different print driver: Changing print drivers will 
  107.     almost always solve your printing problems. In general, you 
  108.     should switch to a driver with a similar name, and probably a 
  109.     less complex name. For example, if you have trouble printing 
  110.     to an Apple LaserWriter Pro 630, then switch to the basic 
  111.     AppleLaserWriter driver. Consult your Windows user manual to 
  112.     learn more about changing print drivers.
  113.  
  114. -    The "Apple LaserWriter" driver: This driver works well for most 
  115.     PostScript laser printers, including the Apple LaserWriter Pro 
  116.     series, the HP LaserJet 4M series, and many others.
  117.  
  118. -    Where to get new drivers: If you can't find a driver that works, 
  119.     then contact your printer manufacturer. You can probably find 
  120.     their phone number in the manual that came with your printer. 
  121.     Printer manufacturers frequently release new drivers that fix 
  122.     compatibility problems.

  126. If you are using pressure sensitive tablets with Fontographer, then be 
  127. sure you have the most recent versions of the software drivers. In 
  128. testing, we used the Wacom Art-Z tablet, the only tablet with an 
  129. available Windows95 driver that we could get our hands on during 
  130. development.

  134. We found that the Logitech PageScan (TM) Color Scanner would scan bitmaps 
  135. directly into Fontographer's template layer. This may work quite well for 
  136. you, or you may want to scan them into Paint/PaintBrush, clean up the 
  137. scan, select the area you want to trace, and then use copy and paste 
  138. to get the bitmap into Fontographer.
