  169.   Special thanks to David K. Clark (DCLARK at AUSVM1) for the initial

  173.   This utility should only be used if you are unable to install Warp on
  174.   your system. It will update the Device Drivers on your Installation
  175.   DISK 1 for use during installation then update these drivers on your
  176.   hard disk at the end of the first phase of Warp installation (after
  177.   DISK 6 has been processed but before you re-boot to continue the
  178.   second phase of install).
  179.  
  180.   If you already have Warp installed and are having problems you need to
  181.   contact IBM OS/2 support to inquire about a fix for your specific
  182.   problem.  If one is available you will be given instructions on where
  183.   you can download the Fixpak that contains your fix.
  184.  
  185.   The support phone numbers are in the Customer Service and Support
  186.   document in the box your copy of OS/2 Warp came in.
  187.  
  188.   This utility will work for either a Warp diskette-based or CDROM-based
  189.   install.
  190.  
  191.   Do the following to prepare to use this utility:
  192.  
  193.   1.  Use DISKCOPY in either DOS or OS/2 to copy Installation DISK 1.
  194.       Be sure to use 2MB capacity diskettes as 1MB capacity diskettes
  195.       will not work reliably when formatted to 1.44MB.  Use this copy
  196.       when running this utility unless directed to do otherwise.
  197.  
  198.   2.  Place WARPINST.EXE in a directory by itself. Enter WARPINST. Since
  199.       this is a self-extracting ZIP file the original, un-compressed
  200.       files will be created in this directory.
  201.  
  202.   3.  Copy WARPINST.EXE to a diskette for safekeeping then delete it
  203.       from the hard disk.
  204.  
  205.   4.  Copy all the other files to another diskette for use during phase
  206.       2 if you plan to format the partition they are on during OS/2 Warp
  207.       installation.
  208.  
  209.   Total space required for WARPINST.EXE and the un-zipped files is
  210.   1.25MB.  Without WARPINST.EXE the space required is 800K so the device
  211.   driver files, UPDTINST.BAT/CMD and README.UPD file will fit on a
  212.   single 2MB diskette.

  225.   INSUFFICIENT SPACE ON DISKETTE
  226.  
  227.   This utility will work with 3.5" and 5.25" installation diskettes.
  228.  
  229.   If you are using 5.25" diskettes (or if you have vendor-supplied
  230.   device drivers), free diskette space is very limited.  If you find
  231.   that the UPDTINST utility reports an error while updating the
  232.   diskette, you have probably run out of room on the diskette,
  233.  
  234.   Try deleting one or more un-used files from your second 5.25"
  235.   diskette.
  236.  
  237.  
  238.   WARNING - DELETING FILES
  239.  
  240.   If you delete files, be sure to delete only from the copy of the
  241.   diskette.  Keep your original Warp Install diskette(s) intact.  This
  242.   is very important during the first phase of a diskette based install.
  243.   After DISK 6 has been processed you are prompted to insert DISK 1.  At
  244.   this point you should use the original, unmodified DISK 1 as the
  245.   install program may want to copy one or more of the files you deleted.
  246.   This would be the only point at which you will need the original,
  247.   unmodified DISK 1.
  248.  
  249.   Depending on your hardware and the file system you will use during
  250.   installation, some of the following files may be deleted.
  251.  
  252.   ■   HPFS.IFS (already deleted for CDROM 5.25" diskette install). Only
  253.       delete this if you are not using HPFS.
  254.  
  255.   ■   TEDIT.EXE and TEDIT.HLP
  256.  
  257.   ■   If you are installing a CDROM version of Warp, you can also delete
  258.       one or more unneeded CDROM drivers (see UTILITY FILES below).  Be
  259.       sure to remark out (REM) the corresponding lines in CONFIG.SYS
  260.       located on the diskette you are working with (the copy).
  261.  
  262.   ■   You may delete one or more unneeded disk controller drivers (see
  263.       UTILITY FILES below).  Be sure to remark out (REM) the
  264.       corresponding lines in CONFIG.SYS on the diskette.
  265.  
  266.   Additional files may need to be deleted to obtain more free disk
  267.   space.  One approach would be to delete either AIC7770.ADD,
  268.   AIC7780.ADD, or both:
  269.  
  270.   Determine if your hardware includes an Adaptec SCSI disk controller
  271.   card.  The device driver AIC7770.ADD is for Adaptec AHA 2740/2742, AHA
  272.   2840/2842VL, and the AIC 7770 EISA/ISA SCSI chip.  Delete AIC7780.ADD
  273.   if you have any of the above controllers.  Delete AIC7770.ADD if you
  274.   don't have any of the above controller cards.

  283.   Alternatively, you may instead delete unused CDROM drivers.  This
  284.   approach would be to delete SONY535.ADD, SONY31A.ADD and SONYCDS1.FLT:
  285.   Determine if your hardware includes an Sony CDROM drive.  If you do
  286.   not have a Sony CDROM drive, then you can delete these files.  If you
  287.   have a Sony CDROM drive and do not have a Phillips CDROM drive, then
  288.   you can delete LMS206.ADD instead.
  289.  
  290.   Edit CONFIG.SYS on the updated diskette for files you deleted. Insert
  291.   a remark (REM) at the beginning of each line that refers to a file
  292.   that you deleted. Delete any 'SET COPYFROMFLOPPY=1' lines.  (This line
  293.   is added automatically by the UPDTINST utility.)
  294.  
  295.   Proceed with these instructions, including running the UPDTINST
  296.   utility.  The UPDTINST utility is designed to update files that are
  297.   actually on your Warp Install diskettes (Phase 1) or hard disk (Phase
  298.   2).  Therefore, you will have no problems when you delete optional
  299.   files (the deleted files will not be re-added).

  350.       files.

  402.   If you are going to format the partition that contains the directory
  403.   you have the unzipped files in then you need to copy them along with
  404.   the UPDTINST.BAT and UPDTINST.CMD files to diskette before starting
  405.   the Warp install. You will not be able to run the WARPINST.EXE again
  406.   during the hard disk update (phase 2) since DOS support for Warp has
  407.   not been installed yet. You might want to place WARPINST.EXE on one
  408.   diskette and unzipped files on another diskette.
  409.  
  410.   If you run this utility multiple times against the same set of
  411.   diskettes, you will need to edit CONFIG.SYS and remove duplicate lines
  412.   that contain SET COPYFROMFLOPPY= and SET WARPINST= lines. This will
  413.   conserve valuable diskette free space.

  457.   UPDATE YOUR HARD DISK (PHASE 2)
  458.  
  459.   At the end of the first phase of Warp install, you are prompted to
  460.   remove DISK 6 (for diskette based install) then press Enter to
  461.   shutdown the system
  462.  
  463.   DO NOT do this. Just remove DISK 6 if necessary and EXIT the install.
  464.   Do the following to update any device drivers that were installed in
  465.   your OS/2 Warp boot partition during the first phase of install with
  466.   the ones from this utility.
  467.  
  468.   1.  Open the OS/2 System Folder and the Command Prompts folder then
  469.       start an OS/2 Window or Fullscreen session.
  470.  
  471.   2.  Change to the directory where the unzipped files and the
  472.       UPDTINST.CMD file are located.
  473.  
  474.       Note: If you formatted the partition these files were in during
  475.       install then place the diskette with the unzipped files in A: and
  476.       change to the A: drive.
  477.  
  478.   3.  Type UPDTINST C:
  479.  
  480.           where C: is the drive you are installing OS/2 Warp on.
  481.  
  482.  
  483.   The UPDTINST program will make multiple passes updating device drivers
  484.   in one directory during each pass. It will add to or create
  485.   \OS2\INSTALL\SERVICE.LOG information on what files are updated.
  486.  
  487.   It will also add a line to your C:\CONFIG.SYS like the following:
  488.  
  489.   SET WARPINST=UPDTINST 04 Feb 1996 22:50:01 Build: 8.239

  492.   You can then enter echo %warpinst% from a OS/2 session to display this
  493.   data when needed. You can also see it by entering the SET command but
  494.   this will display all the environmental variables.

  519.   of OS/2 Warp you are installing and if it's the CDROM or the diskette
