- TappyType (v1.21)
- (a not-especially-practical Control Panel device)

- Description:
-
- TappyType is for those times when you wax nostalgic for the
- good, tough olユ days before word processors.
-
- TappyType, when installed and active, makes typewriter noises in
- response to your keypresses:
- ・ a メnormal-keyモ sound for printable characters
- ・ a spacebar sound for the Spacebar, Tab, and Delete keys
- ・ a carrage return sound for Return and Enter
-
- Put TappyType into your System folder and restart your Mac.
- TappyType will install itself in system memory and will be
- available thereafter. You can change TappyTypeユs behavior,
- including turning it off, via the Control Panel and the
- keyboard. (See メControlling TappyTypeモ below.)
-
- Two of the three noises, namely the normal-key and spacebar
- sounds, are played メasynchronouslyモ. This means that the sounds
- are played in the background, leaving the Mac free to perform
- other tasks while the sounds are playing. These sounds will also
- be stopped if another sound starts playing before the previous one
- is finished. What this all means is that, in general, TappyType wonユt
- slow down your keyboard as you type. (You may experience some
- sluggishness on Mac SEユs and Mac Plusses.)
-
- The carrage return sound is normally played メsynchronouslyモ,
- meaning the Mac drops all other activities to play this sound in
- its entirety, and then turns its attention back to whatever you
- are doing. I made it this way because it sounds better, in my
- opinion anyway, for the carrage return sound to play completely;
- otherwise it is inevitably cut short during normal typing.
- However, if you grow weary of being forced to hear this sound
- all the way through, you can make it play asynchronously like
- the other two.

- Controlling TappyType:
-
- TappyType has these options, accessible via the Control Panel...
-
- ・ メActiveモ: whether TappyType plays any sounds at all
- ・ メCR sound not interruptableモ: whether the carrage return
- sound is played synchronously or asynchronously
-
- You can also toggle the Active option without bringing up the
- Control Panel; type Command-Option-t from wherever you
- are to turn TappyType on and off.
-
- TappyType and the System:
-
- TappyType occupies about 13K of system memory. If you are
- cramped for space, or have some other reason to prevent
- TappyType from installing itself, simply move the TappyType file
- out of your System folder, or into a lower folder, and restart.
-
- TappyType requires the Sound Manager, the collection of routines
- which play ヤsnd ユ resources. You need to use System 6.0 or later,
- especially if youユre using a Mac SE or Mac Plus. Otherwise,
- TappyType will be mute.
-
- NOTE: Please do not try to get fancy with a resource editing utility
- and paste in your own ヤsnd ユ resources. TappyType relies on its
- sounds to have particular ID numbers, attributes, and sizes.

- Changes and Improvements from Previous Versions:
-
- ・ The version number has been increased.
- ・ The silence bug has been fixed. It used to be that TappyType
- would remain mysteriously silent, whether it was active
- or not, for some never-thoroughly-understood reasons.
- ・ TappyType no longer bombs if the Sound Manager isnユt available.
- It simply remains quiet and letユs you know whatユs wrong
- in the Control Panel. (This particular bug cure has not been
- rigorously tested. If youユre getting instant system bombs
- with the touch of a key, itユs because you need a more
- recent System.)
- ・ The メCR sound not interruptableモ option was added.
- ・ It used to be that when you...
- ・ turned off the メCR soundモ option,
- ・ ran an application which has a メTransferモ command,
- ・ selected メTransferモ and waited for the dialog box,
- ・ moved the inverse selector bar over an application name,
- ・ and hit Return...
- the Macintosh would go メdink, vrooozzzzzz.....モ, and so would
- enter a catatonic fit. This bug has been eliminated.
- ・ TappyType now correctly obeys the system volume setting.
- ・ TappyType displays its icon on startup, to let you know itユs alive.
- ・ I included an information screen which presents itself when you
- click on the メTappyTypeモ title in the Control Panel. (Click and
- hold down the mouse button.)
- ・ The Command-Option-t function was added.
- ・ The code has been extensively overhauled and given a tune-up.
- Youユll never notice, of course, but I want you to know my
- my heart is in this.
-
- Possible future improvements:
-
- ・ I would like to find or record a couple more sounds and add
- them to TappyTypeユs repotoire, including the sound a
- typewriter makes when you press a Shift key and the entire
- hammer-assembly shifts up and down, as well as a more
- realistic Tab sound, and a メcrisperモ bell for the carrage
- return sound.

- Whether or Not You Have to Pay for This:
-
- TappyType is freeware, since my address changes so frequently
- that your generous and prolific shareware checks (yea, right) would
- rarely find me. So use TappyType and give it away as much
- as you like. Please do not charge any money for it.
-
- Hope youユre amused.
