Transcription: Challenger was added to NASA's Space Shuttle transportation fleet in 1983. The orbiter was named after a Navy ship that explored the Atlantic and Pacific oceans in the 1870s. Challenger performed well on its maiden voyage in April 1983 and flew in nine subsequent missions until it was destroyed on January 28, 1986.
