Transcription: On its maiden space flight, Columbia performed well with smooth booster and external tank separations. Although it was later detected that some of the heat shield tiles were missing from the pods of the Orbital Maneuvering System's engines, there were no serious problems upon reentry. Later, modifications were made to the thermal protection system on the orbiter in order to improve the durability of the heat shield tiles.
