Transcription: Named after one of the first Navy ships to circumnavigate the globe, Columbia was the second orbiter built and the first to fly on an actual mission. The manufacturer of Columbia was authorized in 1972 with a scheduled manned orbital test flight in March 1978. However, difficulties in the development of more powerful hydrogen-oxygen rocket engines and problems with a new thermal protection system delayed the program.
