Transcription: The optical glass experiment was designed to create a more highly purified glass for use as lenses in infrared light detecting telescopes. The experiments were conducted in an acoustic levitation furnace which used sound waves to combine and melt ingredients in microgravity. Containerless processing, another technique aimed at cleaner glass, eliminates all impurities from the new materials. Especially pure grades of optical glass glass and laboratory ceramics may one day be developed through a combination of these levitation furnaces and containerless processing methods.
