Transcription: Named for the Roman goddess of the dawn, an aurora is a radiant shower of charged solar particles originating from the upper atmosphere. This shower of lights appears in the form of spectacularly luminous streamers and bands. Conceived and conducted by the University of Alaska at Fairbanks, the Auroral Imaging Experiment was designed to allow the first all-encompassing images of the aurora to be taken from the orbiter's windows. Videotapes, films, and photographs were made of the aurora in order to gain a deeper insight into the energetic particle processes that occur in the atmosphere.
