  18. needs, new packaging  options are offered  for TCP/IP Version  1.2 for
  19. OS/2:   base kit,  Network File  System (NFS),  Extended Networking, X
  20. Window System, a Programmer's Toolkit and a source kit.

  45. TCP/IP Version 1.2  has been designed  to improve the  productivity of
  46. the end user.  There has been significant performance improvements  in
  47. the entire product.  New  functions have been added to  TCP/IP Version
  48. 1.2 for OS/2, with the goal  of end user productivity in mind.   These
  49. include the following:
  50.  
  51.   o Network File System (NFS) -- server
  52.  
  53. This allows users to  share files with each  other, much the same  way
  54. that LAN Server/Requester works.  It also has the benefit of  allowing
  55. a user with a UNIX machine to share files with an OS/2 machine.
  56.  
  57.            o   X Window System -- server
  58.  
  59. This is a distributed,  window-based graphics system developed  at the
  60. Massachusetts Institute  of Technology.   TCP/IP  Version 1.2 supports
  61. Version  11,  Release  4  (X11R4)  of  the  X  Window Server function.
  62. Support for the X  Window System server for  OS/2 is an announced  IBM
  63. Statement of Direction.
  64.  
  65.   o File Transfer Protocol -- Presentation Manager (TM) (FTPPM)
  66.  
  67. FTPPM uses standard presentation manager input and output  conventions
  68. to  perform  the  functions  of  the  FTP  client.    It  also  allows
  69. simultaneous connections to remote hosts within a single session.
  70.  
  71.   o Multi-Threaded Libraries
  72.  
  73. TCP/IP  Version  1.2  for  OS/2  supports the Multi-thread programming
  74. feature of the OS/2 operating system in Socket libraries.
  75.  
  76.   o Dynamic Link Library Support
  77.  
  78. TCP/IP Version 1.2  for OS/2 supports  the dynamic linking  feature of
  79. the OS/2 operating system.

  83. Many  functions  have  been  enhanced  to  provide  greater  end  user
  84. productivity.  A list of these follows:
  85.  
  86. o Installation Configuration Automation  Tool (ICAT) has been  updated
  87. to allow configuration of the new features of this program.  Also,  an
  88. indicator displays how far along the installation has progressed.
  89.  
  90. o INETD is a  super server that allows  you to start multiple  servers
  91. from a single OS/2 session, and use the applicable server when needed.
  92.  
  93. o TELNET Server has improved performance.
  94.  
  95. o TELNET LINEMODE Client Support is enhanced to take advantage of  the
  96. Extended Networking package  that is new  to this program;  it reduces
  97. the amount of network traffic for Extended Networking and SLIP.
  98.  
  99. o PMANT --  TN3270 has been  updated to allow  the user to  modify the
  100. PMANT keyboard  definitions and  to select  from any  of the VIO fonts
  101. that are available on the display adapter.
  102.  
  103. o File Transfer Protocol (FTP) will now support HPFS (High Performance
  104. File System).   This  allows users  to transfer  files that  have file
  105. names supported in HPFS.
  106.  
  107. o FTP API -- new procedures give programs the capability to query  the
  108. working directory on a remote  host and query the operating  system of
  109. the remote host.
  110.  
  111. o Simple Network Management Protocol  (SNMP) now supports MIB II  (RFC
  112. 1213).  The SNMP facility can now act as both a managing system and  a
  113. managed system.
  114.  
  115. o LPR/LPD -- remote printer support
  116.  
  117. o Remote Procedure Call
  118.  
  119. o NFS Client.

  121.            BUSINESS SOLUTIONS
  122.  
  123. TCP/IP Version 1.2 for OS/2  provides support for X.25 as  a transport
  124. mechanism  thereby  providing  wide  area  networking  support  as  an
  125. addition to the  overall business solutions  customers are seeking  in
  126. their multivendor enterprises.
  127.  
  128. Support for the FTP/SMTP in Kanji is provided in passthru mode in this
  129. release.
  130.  
  131. Support for the X Window System server Kanji fonts is provided in this
  132. release.
  133.  
  134. The default  OS/2 Code  Page is  used to  support display  of National
  135. Language Characters when  using VT200 TELNET  emulation.  The  default
  136. OS/2 Code Page  for National Language  Support is also  available when
  137. using FTP, TFTP, and SMTP.   INVESTMENT PROTECTION Many features  have
  138. been added to TCP/IP Version  1.2 to protect the investment  customers
  139. have  made  in  the  OS/2  workstations  they  are using in the TCP/IP
  140. environment.  These include:
  141.  
  142. o Facilities for keyboard remapping in PMANT and TN3270
  143.  
  144. o Security enhancements to File Transfer Protocol (FTP)
  145.  
  146. o Security and Interoperability enhancements to NFS Client
  147.  
  148. o Remote Printer support in LPR/LPD
  149.  
  150. o Support of a TELNET LINEMODE client
  151.  
  152. o Support of Boot Protocol (BOOTP).

  154. Also, the addition of such  functions as Dynamic Link Library  support
  155. as  well  as  Multi-Threaded  Library  support  add  to  the   overall
  156. investment  protection  provided  by  TCP/IP  Version  1.2 for OS/2 by
  157. requiring less disk space and memory.

  159.            GROWTH ENABLEMENT

  161. Growth for  customers using  TCP/IP in  a multivendor  environment has
  162. been  significantly  enhanced  by  the  following  additions to TCP/IP
  163. Version 1.2 for OS/2:

  167. o  Support  for  adapters  that  implement  a Network Device Interface
  168. Specification (NDIS) Media Access Control (MAC) driver.

  278.            SYSTEMS MANAGEMENT
  279.  
  280. SystemView   (TM)   is   an   enterprise-wide  structure  for  systems
  281. management.    The  term  systems  management  covers a broad range of
  282. activities, from the daily operations that manage the resources of  an
  283. information  system  to  the  long  range  planning that addresses the
  284. future information processing needs of an enterprise.
  285.  
  286. The IBM  strategy for  systems management  consists of  the SystemView
  287. structure and SystemView conforming products.
  288.  
  289. TCP/IP Version 1.2 for OS/2 provides support for systems management in
  290. the  OS/2  environment.    The  network  management  protocol  support
  291. provided  by  TCP/IP  for  OS/2  is Simple Network Management Protocol
  292. (SNMP).
  293.  
  294. While TCP/IP Version 1.2 is not SystemView conformant, it provides key
  295. features   that   apply   to   the  SystemView  application  dimension
  296. discipline.  These features are as follows:
  297.  
  298. o Configuration Management
  299.  
  300. OS/2 TCP/IP provides  a Presentation Manager  based meters as  well as
  301. its interface to the TCP/IP network.
  302.  
  303. o Performance Management
  304.  
  305. Key performance  related statistical  variables can  be obtained using
  306. SNMP.
  307.  
  308.            o   Problem Management
  309.  
  310. The following problem management facilities are provided:
  311.  
  312. -  The  OS/2  TCP/IP  SNMP  Client  can  request the status of network
  313. devices from SNMP agents on the network.
  314.  
  315. - The OS/2 TCP/IP  SNMP Agent TRAP support  will notify one (or  more)
  316. SNMP Clients of significant network events.  These TRAPs include  cold
  317. start and authentication failure.
  318.  
  319. - The TELNET Server capability  allows remote stations to logon  to an
  320. OS/2 system,  providing remote  console capabilities  for full  screen
  321. applications.  As  a problem determination  aid, this allows  a remote
  322. support group to see what the remote end-user problem is.
  323.  
  324. - The Remote Execution capability  allows commands to be invoked  on a
  325. remote system.   For  example, a  network manager  could start a trace
  326. facility without involving the end user.
  327.  
  328. - The File Transfer Protocol allows remote support groups to  retrieve
  329. a user's system  files, and after  inspection and correction,  replace
  330. the original.
  331.  
  332. TCP/IP provides  the following  system management  enhancements in the
  333. Version 1.2 for OS/2 product:
  334.  
  335. o Support of the new Management Information Base MIB II
  336. o Ability to display SNMP TRAPs
  337. o Ability to obtain the values of individual MIB variables
  338. o Ability to verify the ability to reach a group of hosts.

  344. IBM's  networking  vision  is  to  provide  customers  the  ability to
  345. collect, manage, access  and integrate information  among departments,
  346. locations and companies worldwide and do it simply and easily.

  358. interoperates with  IBM's TCP/IP  products for  VM, MVS,  DOS, AS/400,
  359. System/88  and  the  AIX  family  and products that provide equivalent
  360. protocol support.

  459. PROGRAMMING REQUIREMENTS:  TCP/IP Version  1.2 for OS/2 will run  with
  460. any of the following:
  461.  
  462. o OS/2 Extended Edition Version 1.3
  463. o OS/2 Standard Edition Version 1.3
  464. o OS/2 Version 2.0.
  465.  
  466. Each of the optional function kits (such as NFS, Extended  Networking,
  467. X Window System and the  Programmer's Toolkit) requires that the  base
  468. kit be installed.

  470. Additionally, the Source kit requires that the customer has  installed
  471. the Programmer's Toolkit.
  472.  
  473. COMPATIBILITY:  TCP/IP Version 1.2  includes NDIS MAC drivers for  IBM
  474. Token-Ring, IBM Ethernet and IBM PC Network adapters that do not  come
  475. with NDIS MAC drivers.
  476.  
  477. NDIS  MAC  drivers  are  readily  obtainable  from  a  large number of
  478. different vendors.
  479.  
  480. VT220 does not support downloadable fonts.
  481.  
  482. Special packaging is provided for upgrades from TCP/IP Version 1.0  or
  483. Version 1.1 to TCP/IP Version  1.2 for OS/2.  This  packaging provides
  484. all the function previously contained  in Version 1.0 or Version  1.1.
  485. Refer to the ORDERING  INFORMATION section for specific  ordering part
  486. numbers  and  feature  codes.    Proof  of  License for Version 1.0 or
  487. Version 1.1 is required in order to upgrade to TCP/IP Version 1.2  for
  488. OS/2.

  490.            LIMITATIONS:
  491.  
  492. o Extended Networking (IP over  X.25) will execute on OS/2  EE Version
  493. 1.3.    However,  to  execute  on  OS/2  SE V1.3 or OS/2 2.0, the next
  494. enhancement  to  OS/2   Communication  Manager  (when   available)  is
  495. required.
  496.  
  497.            PERFORMANCE CONSIDERATIONS:

  499. Performance  for  TCP/IP  Version  1.2  is significantly improved from
  500. Version 1.1.  The areas of greatest improvement include the following:

  790.            PROGRAM UPGRADE

  792. The program package upgrade option allows currently licensed users  of
  793. TCP/IP Versions 1.0 and 1.1 for OS/2 to obtain the new function for an
  794. upgrade charge.  The program upgrade to TCP/IP Version 1.2 for OS/2 is
  795. available  from  October  25,  1991.    Orders  will be accepted after
  796. October  25,  1991.    These  upgrades  will  be available through IBM
  797. Authorized  Personal  Computer  Dealers  and  Industry  Remarketers --
  798. Personal  Computers  certified  to  market  IBM  Authorized   Advanced
  799. Products.   The remarketer  will require  a Proof  of License for each
  800. upgrade ordered.  The original  Proof of License is the  colored front
  801. cover page (inside the hard  binder) or the separate Proof  of License
  802. page in the program package as identified by IBM to the remarketer.
