- CDBENCH version 2.4 (C) 1992 Profit Press
-
- CDBENCH reports CD-ROM interface performance information. It will only
- operate on the Profit Press MegaDEMO CD-ROM. By operating on only this
- CD-ROM (pressed by a single company) more reliable results can be
- obtained. The run time of this program can be up to 5 minutes and is
- neccessary to produce results that can be measured accurately by the
- system timer.
-
- Information on benchmarks
-
- 1/3 stroke seek: The standard for determining the "average" seek
- time of a drive. This test performs 60 seeks back
- and forth across the disc.
-
- Random seek: Performs 60 seeks to a "random" areas of the CD-ROM
- under the 350 megabyte mark. The seeks are always
- the same every time CDBENCH is run. (allows for
- relatively short seek comparisons between drives)
-
- 1/3 stroke seek & read: Performs 60 staggered seeks (to defeat caching)
- over 1/3 of the CD-ROM. After each seek a single
- 2k sector is read. This test will defeat some
- CD-ROM drives and caching programs that ignore
- seek commands.
-
- Sustained long read: Reads 2 megabytes of consecutive sectors off
- the CD-ROM in 32k blocks. This represents the
- maximum data rate. Multimedia compatible drives
- should read more than 150,000 bytes per second.
-
- Sustained short read: Reads 512k of consecutive sectors in single
- sector (2k) blocks. This will show how well
- the buffer or cache in the CD-ROM drive handles
- small but frequent accesses.
-
- MegaSearch benchmark: A simulation of common file handling operations
- used by MegaSearch Retrieval Software and MegaDOOR.
- This should provide a good indication of relative
- DOS random access speeds to the CD-ROM.
-
-
- A database of CD-ROM results will be maintained on the Profit Press BBS.
- The phone number is (602)299-0693 and we support 2400-14400 with v.32bis.
- If you'd like an ASCII output of your results type CDBENCH <filename>
- (preferably a filename that doesn't output to the CD-ROM!). Blanks will
- be left in your output file to add information about your CD-ROM and
- system configuration. Please upload your results to our BBS!
