  4. PUNIMAX is a computer algebra system which runs in CLISP, a Common Lisp
  5. implementation by Bruno Haible and Michael Stoll.
  6.  
  7. It is based on MAXIMA, a Common Lisp implementation due to William F.
  8. Schelter at Texas University, which itself is based on the original
  9. implementation of Macsyma at MIT.
  10.  
  11. This is *not* free software. Because the MIT Macsyma code is copyrighted.
  12. To use PUNIMAX or MAXIMA, you are required by US law to first obtain a
  13. license from D.O.E. or one of the commercial licensees, then use the ftp'able
  14. software as enhancements.
  15.  
  16. Licenses can be obtained from the ESTC, Argonne Ill. Currently their charge
  17. for 1 machine is $165 to universities; site licenses are also available.
  18.  
  19. Historically, this situation arose from disputes in the U.S. over the
  20. commercialization of partially-government-funded academic research.
  21. Various U.S. governmental orders in the mid-1980's affirmed the rights of
  22. universities to license such research results.
