- WHAT'S THIS?
-
- Well, as 60% of this new OctaMED is now up and running,
- we decided to treat all members to an early preview of it.
- ( don't expect perfection at this early stage please )
-
-
- Load/Run the program and open the load window and you will see
- a module in this very drawer, it is a 32 channel mod!!
- Not chosen for it's perfect sound samples, but simply because
- we like the TV series.... .-)
-
- There are also a couple of small [cough, cough] samples as well.
- Note these directly recorded samples can be in Mono or Stereo
- and with no size restrictions, ( you need lots of memory and
- of course, a hard drive is a must ), it can be great fun to use!!
- To load in a directly recorded sample, first open the sample
- editor, now load the chosen sample, once loaded, select play.
-
- There are no docs to guide you around all the new additions at
- this time, so you will have to do some exploring of the menus etc.
- ( there will be a 200 page manual to accompany this release )
-
- Finaly, please note that this *is* a very early pre-demo and there
- are bound to be parts not functioning, so don't expect too much
- at this *very* early stage in it's development.

- --------FAQ's regarding OctaMED and it's future.....
-
- Q:Why doesn't OctaMED play samples longer than 131072 bytes?
-
- A: This is a hardware restriction of audio DMA, and has existed
- in (Octa)MED since the beginning, however, as you will see
- this restriction no longer exists in Soundstudio, when making
- use of the new mixing routines (see the next question).
-
- Q: What's all this I hear about 32 channel and mixing etc?
-
- A: OctaMED Soundstudio (V1) will concentrate on major new features:
- A new mixing routine, notation editor, 32 tracks and more....
-
- At the time of writing the mixing routine is allmost ready,
- and working well, ( have a look )
-
- The mixing routine is a great improvement over the old 8 channel modes,
- it supports 1-32 channels, individual volume control on each channel,
- synthetic sounds, panning in stereo mode, echoes etc.
- It even removes many limits of the 4 channel DMA audio:
- samples can be in Fast RAM, they can be longer than 131072 bytes,
- and they can be "played backwards".
-
- The only drawback is speed, which thankfully affects 68000 users only,
- it is slower than the old 8 channel modes.
- For example, an A3000/25 can mix about 8 channels at 48 kHz,
- using Toccata 16-bit output. ( 4000 is of course, faster )
- However, even 68000 users can record music e.g...
- onto hard disk in non-realtime, at up to 65kHz in 16 bit quality,
- (the CD rate is 44.1 kHz).
- PC ScreamTracker (S3M) modules can also now be loaded.
-
- The work on a completely new notation editor has now been started,
- it is not be available in this early preview copy though.
-
- When the work has been completed, ( sometime in 1996 ), a full
- non-save demo will be placed into the CiX OctaMED User Conference,
- onto Aminet and will also be available from many other sources.
-
- The price will not be finalised until just before it goes on sale
- and this will be detailed within the docs of the demo itself.
-
- Please remember though, if you have registered, ( returned your
- card ), as a buyer of the diskette version 6, (not earlier versions ),
- you will get a nice large discount off of the SoundStudio price!!!
-
- If you are a purchaser the OctaMED V6 CD then please retain your
- receipt, as you will also be entitled to a discount by returning
- it with your order for SoundStudio. ( no receipt, no discount )
-
- Note that the above upgrade details relate to orders placed *directly*
- with us here at RBF Software only.
- Other licenced distributors will make there own arrangements regarding
- price/upgrades etc, so if you want to purchase from any other supplier,
- you will need to contact them directly for price/availabilty details.
-
-
-
-
-
- Q: When will it be available?
-
- A: Hopefully around April/May 1996. (depends on bug reports etc)
- Keep an eye out for the inevitable magazine reviews of the program.
-
- Q: Will I get an upgrade price from a previous version that I have bought?
-
- A: See above
-
-
- Q: Will OctaMED ever be available on PCs?
-
- A:
- Simple answer, YES.
- We hope to start on a port of the program early next year.
- We say a port, but it is more likely to be a complete re-write
- but this is entirely in the hands of Teijo our beloved author. ;)
-
-
- Q: When OctaMED does become available on PCs, is Amiga support
- completely abandoned?
-
- A: The miggy will not be abandoned by us!!
- AT might though if they can't get their advertising/promotion acts
- together, especialy when their Escom shop staff say thing like..
- "the Amiga has had it's day", great, coming from an Escom employee!!
-
- Teijo & I will always primarily remain Amiga users at heart,
- and will use our dear Miggies for as long as they continue to work :)
- ( Teijo and I will certainly buy a RISC Amiga when and *if*
- AT brings one to the market ). {wishfull thinking?}
