- Please notify me if you have any suggestions on how these programs may be
- improved or changed. Any and all comments are welcome. You do not have to be a
- registered user to make suggestions. If your suggestions are accepted and they
- are the first time mentioned, I will send you an upgraded DISK (free of
- charge) including your modifications as well as all the others that have
- preceded you. If your suggestion is lengthy or complicated, a sample program
- on a disk would be appreciated. Even this GUIDE is not beyond improvement.
-
-
- The programs were created on a Leading Edge computer with a monochrome monitor
- and no graphics board using the Microsoft QuickBASIC Compiler. And, the
- printer used is a Gemini 10X. Therefore, these programs should work on the IBM
- XT and many clones. I believe that you will need at least 640K of available
- memory, if you intend to make many contacts. If you have found trouble on your
- computer, please let me know.
-
-
- Copies of the original source code are NOT available to any individual or
- organization for any reason. So please don't ask.
-
-
- I make no guarantees or warranties as to the accuracy, correctness or
- reliability of these programs. All responsibilities are borne by the user.
-
-
- The first thing you should do is to make a copy of this disk by using the
- DISKCOPY command from DOS and put the original in a safe place.

-
- PURPOSE ---
-
- Yes, I know - What we don't need is another contest logging program. But, what
- we do need is a GOOD contest program. One that is easy to use and works fast.
- One that can be run by one person while working the radio. It should help the
- operator, not hinder him and slow things down. With your help and suggestions,
- we will make this the "Contest Logging Program to end all Contest Logging
- Programs."
-
-
- CASE SENSITIVE ---
-
- This program is NOT case sensitive. That is, you may type upper or lower case
- letters anytime and the program will correct your entry to all capitals.
-
-
-
- DEMO DISK ---
-
- If upon booting up the program disk, there is a flashing sign saying "DEMO
- DISK" then you will know that the program you have is for demonstration
- purposes only. The program, duping, logging etc. will all work exactly as the
- full program but it will be limited to only 25 contacts. You will have an
- opportunity to evaluate the program and make sure it is exactly what you want.
- If there is something that you would like added before you order a full
- working program, just let me know.
-
-
-
- TEST DISK ---
-
- If there is a line in the opening billboard mentioning that this is "For
- testing purposes only", believe it! You have a disk that was sent out for
- error checking and there may still be serious errors in the programs.
-
-
-
- PERSONALIZED COPY ---
-
- When you send in your $25 to become a registered user, you will receive a
- personalized copy of the latest version of this program. And, it will no
- longer have any requests for money. The "ugly screen" will no longer come up
- after every 25 contacts. You will be entitled to receive written or electronic
- replys to your questions and comments. You will receive periodic notices of
- upgrades and new programs. In addition, upgrades are available to you for only
- $10.

-
- GETTING STARTED ---
-
- You will need a copy of this disk and 2 blank formatted disks. The first thing
- to do is to create a contest log program disk on one of the blank diskettes
- for use in the field, so if it gets destroyed, there will be no great loss.
- The procedure is to place this diskette in Drive A:. Then from the A prompt
- enter:
-
- A>DISKCOPY A:
-
-
- The next step is to label the disks you are working with. The one you created
- above should be labelled KB0ZP CONTEST LOG PROGRAM. And, the last blank disk
- you have should be labelled (CONTEST NAME) DATA DISK (DATE). All the data for
- up to 4000 contacts will be written to this disk. I don't think you will need
- any more data space. Remember, the original copy of these programs should be
- in a safe place, one copy you keep at home, the other copy you use in the
- field or give away or whatever.
-
-
-
- STATION SETUP ---
-
- Since one of the objectives of this program is that it is to be run by only
- one person - a few words about station setup. Sit squarely at your table and
- place the microphone on a stand right in front of you. Then, immediately
- behind that place the computer keyboard. Working away from you, the computer
- comes next with the screen on top. Place the radio to the right or left of the
- computer. The radio should be put on VOX and wear earphones. Now you are all
- set for one man operation.
-
-
-
- RUNNING THE PROGRAM ---
-
- Place the program disk in Drive A: and enter -
-
- A>KB0ZPLOG
-
- And the program will start. That is all that must be done with the programs.
- Turn on the printer and align the paper at this time.
-
- After the opening billboard - Press any key to continue ...

- TIME & DATE RESET ---
-
- The time and date that are in memory will be shown here. if both of these are
- OK - press Y and you will move on to the next screen. If either one is not
- correct, press N. You will then be asked which one you would like to change.
- Press D for Date or T for Time. If you press N no changes will be made and you
- will move to the next screen.
-
- When D is pressed, you will be able to enter the corrected date. It must be
- entered in the format shown. ie MM/DD/YY. 12 Jul 78 would be entered as
- 07/12/78. Don't forget the slashes (/). Then press enter and you will be asked
- if all is correct. If OK press Y, if not press N. The day of the week will
- change automatically.
-
- Now press T to change the time. Enter the correct time in the format shown.
- 2:35pm would be entered as 14:35:00. This is a 24 hour clock. Also, you must
- type the colons (:). You do not have to type the seconds. 14:35 is OK. The
- time will start when enter is pressed for more accurate timekeeping. But,
- please remember that the clock in the computer is not too accurate. When
- entering the time & date just remember to use the DOS format. The day of the
- week will change automatically.
-
- The next question to answer is whether you are using Local, Zulu, or UTC time.
- Press the appropriate letter and you are now shown the new date and time. If
- you still have errors or change your mind, do the process again. If all is OK,
- press Y. This proceedure changes the DOS clock in the computer, so it may have
- to be changed again when you start a different program.
-
-
-
- SELECT PATH ---
-
- Enter the path to where you wish the data stored. If you wish to store the
- data on a floppy disk, then enter A: or B:. Any path that is acceptable by DOS
- will be OK.
-
-
-
- RESTORE MEMORY ---
-
- If you are restoring the memory after a power failure, or some other disaster,
- refer to the section "What To Do If The Power Goes Off" otherwise, press N. If
- you press Y, the path must include two specific files, KB0ZP-1.DTA and KB0ZP-
- 2.DTA. Then you can choose the band & mode and continue on as if nothing
- happened. If you wish an immediate printout, turn on the printer option with
- F1 then A.

-
- FORMATTED DISK ---
-
- If you elected to store the data in drive A: or B:, you will be asked to
- insert a blank formatted disk in the correct drive. Then - Press any key to
- continue... Or, when restoring the memory, you must have the two KB0ZP files
- available.
-
-
- FILES ON THE DISK ---
-
- If the disk you inserted in A: or B: is not blank, all the files on that disk
- will be listed. Note the amount of "Bytes Free" you have. If you feel that
- this is enough for what you want to do, just press N to proceed. NOTE that if
- there are any KB0ZP.DTA files on the disk, they will be overwritten with the
- new data and you will loose the old data. If you press Y to continue, all the
- files will be erased on this disk and you will loose them all. (BE CAREFUL)
- Next you will be asked if you are sure. Y kills the files, any other key lets
- you proceed and the files are not touched.
-
-
-
- PRINTOUT ---
-
- Now enter Y if you want to print out the contacts during the contest as well
- as save to disk. And, don't forget to turn on the printer and align the paper.
-
-
-
- CALL SIGN ---
-
- Next, enter the call sign that is going to be used for the contest. There is a
- maximum of 10 characters that can be entered here. KA0GNS/VE6 is the longest
- type of call sign that may be used.
-
-
-
- NAME OF CONTEST ---
-
- Here you will be offered a selection of contests that you might like to work.
- Choose one. If your contest is not listed, then choose "OTHER" and continue
- reading in this guide from Page #9 ---. Otherwise, continue here.
-
- I have considered the following contests for this program and the workings of
- each are listed below. Please note that this section will be enlarged in

- 2nd Exchange set to: RST
- 3rd Exchange set to: SERIAL NUMBER
- Dupes all Call Signs - You may contact the same station only once per band.
- Dupes all Prefixes
- The scoring is too complicated for this computer to keep track of. There is no
- way to keep track of which continent contacts which continent as well as which
- country within each continent. F1, P doesn't work.
-
- The number of different prefixes contacted will be shown. The different prefix
- shapes are as follows: A4, A44, AA4, A444, and AA44. In addition, the Call Sign
- AA3AA/2 will be duped as AA2 as per the rules of the contest.

-
- EXCHANGE #2 ---
-
- The first piece of information (Exchange #1) you receive from the other
- station will be the call sign. That will be true no matter what contest you
- are running. The second piece of information depends upon the contest. And,
- may be selected by you. Let's say you need a signal report from him. You may
- type RST or SIG REPORT at this point. There is a maximum of 12 characters,
- numbers & spaces available. If RST is selected, a 59 or 599 will appear
- automatically during the contest when you depress ENTER. They are selected by
- the mode you are in. Of course, you still may enter any RST you wish.
-
-
-
- EXCHANGE #3 ---
-
- This works the same as above and is optional. If a 3rd piece of information is
- not needed for the contest, just press enter.
-
-
-
- SAME STATION, DIFFERENT BANDS ---
-
- If you may contact a station only once no matter what band or mode during the
- contest, enter N. Be careful here. Because of duping information, this CANNOT
- be changed once it is entered.
-
-
-
- SELECT THE BAND ---
-
- Press the key letter of one of the 14 different bands listed. If you want to
- work a band that is not listed, enter the letter (O). Then type in the band
- you wish to use. Numbers only please. Then type (M) or (C) or (G) for Meters,
- Centimeters or Gegahertz.
-
- You may use this extra band as many times as you wish. The computer will
- record and save any band you enter. So, you may enter two or three or more
- different bands in this area and all the record keeping and duping will be
- taken care of. This gives you an unlimited number of bands you may work. I
- have put the most common ones on the screen for your use.
-
- NOTE: You cannot use P during the initial set up. When the band is stated as
- "Not assigned" you must enter something.

-
-
-
- SELECT THE MODE ---
-
- There are 7 different modes you may choose from or press 8 and you may select
- any mode you wish. This option works the same as BAND above. To log cross mode
- contacts such as transmitting on CW and listening on voice, press 8 and name
- the band A1-A3. The 9 option works as above.
-
- NOTE: The 9 option cannot be used when you are in the "Not Assigned" mode.
-
-
-
- THE MAIN SCREEN ---
-
- This is where the action takes place. In the upper left hand corner, Today's
- Date is displayed. The date will change as you pass midnight. Check to make
- sure it is correct especially if you are using Zulu or UTC time. If it is
- incorrect, enter (F1) as the call sign then (D) and you will be offered a
- chance to change the date just like before when you originally entered it.
-
- The upper right hand corner displays the Time of Day. It is Local, Zulu, or
- UTC as you specified in the beginning. If you would like to change it, enter
- (F1) as the call sign then (T) and you will be given a chance to change it as
- before. Don't try to get away with not specifying the L, Z, or U options
- because it is needed on the printout.
-
- In the top center is the name of the contest. Make sure it is correct. If not,
- enter (F1) then (N) and you will be given an opportunity to change it. But, if
- you chose anything but "OTHER" when selecting the contest it is better to
- start over. Because the scoring will get all screwed up.
-
- The Call Sign of the operating station is displayed near the top of the screen
- on the right. Enter (F1) then (Y) to correct. If you have a personallized copy
- of this program, F1, Y will not work.
-
- Under that, the Total Number of contacts are kept track of.
-
- Working down, the next thing is an Elapsed Timer. It indicates how long it has
- been since the last contact. If there is an abnormally long time between
- contacts, the timer may wrap around the screen. Just, make another contact,
- that will reset the clock, then press F1 then spacebar to clean up the screen.
-
- If you press (F1) then (S) you can set a timer to let you know if you are
- making contacts as fast as you desire. Set the new time delay to the rate at
- which you want to make contacts - say 20 sec. - If you do not log a contact
- every 20 seconds, an alarm will sound and the words "Elapsed Time" will start
- flashing. 0 will turn the timer off by setting it to a 24 hour delay.
-
- The next box will display any error messages that come up.
-
- The next to bottom box is used to keep track of the score. It will display NOT
- CALCULATING when the parameters of the scoring have not been entered.

-
-
- MAXIMUM NUMBER OF CONTACTS ---
-
- The program will handle up to 4000 contacts. However, it is limited by the
- amount of available RAM in your computer. I don't know how you have configured
- your computer or how many "memory resident" programs you have etc. So, I
- cannot guarantee that your setup will handle 4000 contacts. But, don't worry,
- all contacts are saved to disk, and if you exceed the capacity of your
- computer, you will still have all the info on your disk.
-
-
- AUTOMATIC SCORING ---
-
- Enter (F1) as the call sign then (P) and you will be taken to a special screen
- where you may enter the parameters for scoring. If you have selected FIELD DAY
- as the contest, the special rules for that contest will appear. They should be
- self explanatory. Other contests will allow you to adjust the scoring within
- certain limits.
-
-
-
- TEST RUN ---
-
- As you can see, the Band & Mode you selected are highlighted by a square box.
-
- Now enter a Call Sign, say KB0ZP. Then enter the other information asked for.
- Just make up something. A maximum of 12 characters is allowed for each. The
- Call Sign must have at least 4 characters with a maximum of 10 and a number
- must be in the second or third position.
-
- When the last piece of information is entered. the printer begins to print the
- masthead for page one and the record of your first contact. Notice that the
- disk drive light also went on which means that your contact has been saved to
- disk. Immediately after each contact, all information is printed & saved to
- disk so that if there is a power failure no information is lost. The Elapsed
- Timer has been reset to zero and it starts counting again. Now you are ready
- for your next contact. All of this takes about 4 seconds. If either piece of
- information is titled RST, all you need to do is press enter for an RST of 599
- or 59.

-
-
-
- Enter KB0ZP again as another contact and see what happens. Embarrassing isn't
- it? Hi! The error message will keep blinking until you log in another Call
- Sign.
-
- Now let's change the band. Enter (F1) for the call sign then (B) and you will
- be given a chance to choose a different band to work - Choose one and press
- the key letter. Notice that the highlight box has changed position reflecting
- your new choice. Enter KB0ZP again with the other information and you will see
- that it is not a dupe this time because you changed the band. And, hopefully,
- you have indicated in the set-up that you MAY contact the same station on
- different bands. Total contacts now reads 2. And since the masthead was not
- printed, the total time elapsed was about 1.5 seconds.
-
- Change the mode by entering (F1) then (M) as above. Make a change and the box
- moved again. Enter KB0ZP again and now you might have another dupe because you
- "worked" me on that band before. Notice that you are building a complete
- record on the screen of all your contacts. The Total Contact box adds them up
- and displays the grand total. The program will crash if the Freespace reaches
- zero.
-
- Now take a look at the printout that you are generating. The masthead contains
- your Call Sign, The name of the contest, and the date. It lists all the
- information you obtained in your contact in a chronological order. There is
- now a permanent record of the time lag between contacts. There is also a place
- to keep track of QSL records. I believe that this might come in handy if you
- are collecting prefixes or something. Notice also that the column headings
- change to reflect the information required by each contest. The printout will
- scroll to print a new page after every 50 contacts. This makes it easy to file
- your contacts by 50's. There is enough room on the left side of the page for
- 3-hole punching if you file in a loose leaf binder.
-
- To see if you have worked a station before - type in the call sign and hit
- enter. If it is a dupe, you will be notified. If it is not a dupe, try to work
- him. Then let's say that you make no contact, just enter (/) slash and it is
- cancelled. The elapsed time clock will continue as if nothing happened.
-
- A double slash (//) may be typed as the last character of any of the three
- pieces of information. And, when return is pressed, all entries will be
- voided. If you enter a single slash (/), just the entry that you are on will
- be voided. The backspace will work on all characters except the first one.
- With all that is going on at the time of entry, I cannot figure out how to
- erase the first character with the backspace, so you will have to use / or //.
-
- Type (F1) and then (L) to list all the contacts made so far. Before the
- listing is made, you will be asked which contact to start with. If you press
- enter, the listing will start with number 1. When you have a lot of contacts,
- it is better to start with a number near the one you wish to view. Then press
- any key to go to the next listing of contacts. But, if you press [enter] you
- will go directly back to the contest. So, to view a small number of contacts
- you may select the starting number and then finish any time you want.

-
- After finding a specific contact, you may change or fix the entry. Press (F1)
- then (C). Enter the contact number and make the necessary changes.
-
- You may exit directly to DOS by pressing (F1) and (Q). All the files are
- closed each time after information is entered, so the information may be
- recalled anytime needed. And, if power goes off there is nothing to worry
- about.
-
- Press F1 then (Alt (A thru O)) will show you the usable frequencies by band
- and class of licence. When at that screen, you may press (E) which will give
- you 3 screens of Emissions Designators. By pressing (L) the limitations will
- be shown. The date in the upper right hand corner of the screen is the date of
- the FCC License Guide the information was taken from.
-
- There is a listing of all the Amateur Radio Sections in North America and
- suggested abbreviations in this guide and also in the program - press (F2) to
- view it. When entering the sections as called for on Field Day you must be
- careful to use a good abbreviation chart. No two should be the same and they
- should be easy to remember. If you enter the Iowa Section as IA one time and
- Iowa the next, when you alphabetize IN or Indiana will fall between the two.
-
- F3 will bring up two screens of the Standard Contest Guidelines as taken from
- QST.
-
-
- CONVERT ---
-
- Now that you have made many contacts with the KB0ZP CONTEST LOG, you can add
- these contacts to your master log as created by the KB0ZP RECORD KEEPING
- SYSTEM. The RECORD KEEPING program contains a small utility that converts
- these records into a compatable form for use by PCFILE+. PCFILE+ is the filing
- program used by the KB0ZP RECORD KEEPING SYSTEM.

- WHAT TO DO IF THE POWER GOES OFF
-
-
-
- 1. Don't panic - you have all the important data on the disk.
-
- 2. Insert the program disk in Drive A:
-
- 3. Enter A>:KB0ZPLOG
-
- 4. Boot up in the normal fashion.
-
- 5. Reset the Date & Time.
-
- 6. Enter the PATH.
-
- 7. Press Y when asked about restoring the memory.
-
- 8. Remove the program disk and insert the data disk in Drive A: or Drive B: if
- needed.
-
- 9. Press any key - The data will be loaded.
-
- 10. Choose the Band & Mode
-
- 11. This will take you back to the main chart.
-
- 12. Check the printer and align the paper if necessary.
-
- 13. Turn the printer on by pressinf F1 then A
-
- 14. If you have selected the option to print out a report while contesting
- then, the printer will start automatically and print another masthead
- starting with the next contact number. All duping will continue as if you
- never lost power.
-
- 15. A clean printout can be made after the contest with the print program.
-
-
-
- NOTE: The number of contacts by band & mode and the scoring total will not be
- restored. It takes too much time & space on the disk to save all 120 entries
- after each contact. It's really not needed anyway. The total score should be
- recalculated at your leisure when the contest is over. The restore does,
- however, save and restore all the scoring parameters. So, upon restart, the
- score will start over again.
