In Japan, use of the racsimile began with the development of photographic transmission devices, and was limited to special fields such as news media and meteorological applications. The present popularity of the fax began with the introduction in 1972 of devices that can use ordinary phone lines. Incidentally, the invention of the telephone came in the year 1876.
