  34.   The introduction of the KODAK Photo CD system has been
  35.   enthusiastically greeted by computer users who are eager to use
  36.   high-quality photographic images on their desktop.  However, the
  37.   Photo CD system represents the first widely adopted use of
  38.   multisession CD ROM technology.  And because it is so new,  there
  39.   has been some confusion about the CD ROM drives, related
  40.   components, and software required to incorporate Photo CD
  41.   technology into the desktop environment.  This guide is intended
  42.   to help clear up some of the confusion.
  43.  
  44.   Eastman Kodak Company has tested the drives, related components,
  45.   and device driver software listed in this guide for compatibility
  46.   with the KODAK Photo CD format.  Each drive has at least limited
  47.   compatibility with the Photo CD format if it is used with the
  48.   appropriate components and software (listed in the two columns
  49.   adjacent to the drive column) or, when it is part of one of the
  50.   configurations described below.  There is no guarantee that at the
  51.   drives listed will work properly with your computer
  52.   configuration.The correct operation of the CD ROM drives and
  53.   controllers with your computer will depend on the correct version of
  54.   device driver software and compatible computer peripheral hardware.
  55.   Substituting different drives, components,  and software may cause
  56.   incompatibility.
  57.  
  58.   To support the large numger of users of the NEC PC-98 series and
  59.   itscompatibles, widely used in Japan, this guide now lists Photo
  60.   CD capable CD ROM drive systems that have been tested with that
  61.   type of computer platform. See Table A.3.

  96. 3) Requirements for Reading Photo CD Images
  97.

  100.  
  101.   In  order to access Photo CD images on a computer, users need the
  102.   following compatible components++:
  103.  
  104. 1. A CD ROM drive capable of reading Mode 2 Form 1 data
  105.   (Photo  CD image data is recorded in a CD ROM format known as Mode 2
  106.    Form 1).
  107. 2. A CD ROM controller (also known as a host adaptor or controller
  108.    board).
  109. 3. A cable to connect the drive to the controller.
  110. 4. Device driver software (low-level device driver and foreign file
  111.    system driver) capable of reading Mode 2 Form 1 data.
  112.  
  113.   Together, these four components form a Photo CD-compatible  CD ROM
  114.   drive subsystem.  Each component of the subsystem must be capable of
  115.   supporting the Photo CD format. Customers must contact the drive
  116.   manufacturers for specific information about the Photo CD
  117.   compatibility of their CD ROM drive subsystem before purchasing
  118.   those items.
  119.  
  120. CD ROM Systems may now be divided into three general classes: SCSI,
  121. Proprietary Bus, and ATAPI.  All MacIntosh systems use SCSI
  122. controllers. IBM PC/AT, IBM PS/2 and compatibles and NEC PC-98 and
  123. compatibles may use any type of drive if the recommended controller
  124. is installed. ATPI drives are often provided without a controller.
  125.  
  126. They rely instead on an IDE controller already installed, which
  127. typically controlls a hard disk drive. Unless an Enhanced IDE
  128. controller is available, only two IDE devices may be run off of a
  129. single IDE controller card. Thus, if two hard disk drives are
  130. connected to the IDE controller, one drive will have to be
  131. disconnected to allow an ATAPI CD ROM  drive to be added. An
  132. Enhanced IDE controller can run up to four IDE devices.
  133.  
  134. In addition to the hardware and driver software listed above, you
  135. will also need application software capable of accessing Photo CD
  136. images, Kodak offers a family of Photo CD-enabled software packages
  137. that can access, store, import, and enhance Photo CD images and high-
  138. quality digital images in other popular file formats.
  139.

  141. Multisession Drives
  142. ___________________
  143.  
  144. The Photo CD system offers the considerable advantage of allowing
  145. images to be appended to a disc in multiple recording sessions.
  146. Users who want to take advantage of that capability will need
  147. multisession drives to read the data appended to discs in subsequent
  148. recording sessions.  The drive subsystem kits listed in Tables A.1
  149. and A.2 have been determined to be fully capable of reading
  150. multisession Photo CD images and are licensed in our Photo CD
  151. branding program.  The drive and controller combinations listed in
  152. Tables B.1 and B.2 consist of Photo CD branded CD-ROM drives that
  153. have been tested with other controller and software combinations.
  154. Look for the Photo CD logo on these drives.
  155.

  159. program for multisession drives.  At this time, the drives listed in
  160. this guide will not be able to play data XA audio that will be
  161. present on certain kinds of Photo CD discs later in the year.Single
  162. Session Drives

  165.   There are Photo CD-compatible CD ROM drive subsystems available
  166.   today which can access images written to a compact disc during a
  167.   single recording session. These drives are known as single session
  168.   drives.
  169.  
  170.   The single session CD ROM drive subsystems listed in Tables C.1 and
  171.   C.2 offer limited capability in reading Photo CD images.
  172.   Specifically, the single session CD ROM drive subsystems will read
  173.   Photo CD images recorded onto a Photo CD disc in ONE session.
  174.   However, these drives will not recognize data appended (i.e.,
  175.   added) to disc after the initial recording session.  A single
  176.   session drive is suitable if you want to begin working with Photo
  177.   CD images immediately and you are able to limit data recording to
  178.   one session per disc.
  179.  
  180.  
  181.   A key measure of the performance of a CD ROM drive is its Transfer
  182.   Speed, expressed in kilobytes per second (KB/s). This is the speed
  183.   at which data is read and transferred to the computer. Audio CD
  184.   players run at a speed of 150 KB/s and are referred to as Single
  185.   Speed or '1X'drives. This figure is used as a reference for all CD
  186.   ROM drives. Therefore, a drive that transfers data at 300KB/s is
  187.   designated as a '2X'drive.  A 3X drive and a 4X drive would have
  188.   transfer rates of 450 KB/s and 600 KB/s respectively. However,
  189.   these figures should be treated as as nominal measures of
  190.   performance. Actual transfer rates may vary from the  specified
  191.   rate depending on the type of data recorded on the CD. In this
  192.   guide the manufacturer's specification for the drive is indicated
  193.   along with the average transfer rate measured on a variety of Photo
  194.   CD discs used in our tests. Typically, the measured Transfer Speed
  195.   is less than that specified by the manufacturer.
