  7. I.  LIST OF FILES
  8.     The following list details all of the files supplied on the Exelsior
  9.     disk:

  15.         VENDOR.DOC      Information for shareware vendors
  16.         EXLSIOR.EXE     Compressed Excelsior in self-extracting form

  18.     In addition, there may be files which have been placed on the disk by
  19.     the shareware vendor from which you obtained this disk.

  21. II.  REGISTRATION INFORMATION
  22.  
  23.    With registration you will receive:
  24.  
  25.         -  The latest version of Excelsior (if necessary)
  26.         -  A printed reference manual and 50 page Fixer's Handbook
  27.         -  The option to obtain a hint book
  28.         -  Discounts on other Castle Software products
  29.  
  30.    To register Excelsior, simply run the register program.  (Type
  31.    "register" at the DOS prompt.)  Complete instructions on registering
  32.    will be explained by the registration program.

  35. III. DEFINITION OF SHAREWARE
  36.  
  37.     Shareware distribution gives users a chance to try software
  38.     before buying it.  If you try a shareware program and continue
  39.     using it, you are expected to register.  Individual programs
  40.     differ on details -- some request registration while others
  41.     require it, some specify a maximum trial period.  With
  42.     registration, you get anything from the simple right to continue
  43.     using the software to an updated program with printed manual.

  45.     Copyright laws apply to both shareware and commercial software,
  46.     and the copyright holder retains all rights, with a few specific
  47.     exceptions as stated below.  Shareware authors are accomplished
  48.     programmers, just like commercial authors, and the programs are
  49.     of comparable quality. (In both cases, there are good programs
  50.     and bad ones!)  The main difference is in the method of
  51.     distribution.  The author specifically grants the right to copy
  52.     and distribute the software, either to the general public or to a
  53.     specific group.  For example, some authors require written
  54.     permission before a commercial disk vendor may copy their
  55.     shareware.

  57.     Shareware is a distribution method, not a type of software.  You
  58.     should find software that suits your needs and pocketbook,
  59.     whether it's commercial or shareware.  The shareware system makes
  60.     fitting your needs easier, because you can try before you buy.
  61.     And because the overhead is low, prices are low also.  Shareware
  62.     has the ultimate money-back guarantee -- if you don't use the
  63.     product, you don't pay for it.

  66. IV. DISCLAIMER - AGREEMENT

  68.    Users of Excelsior must accept this disclaimer of warranty:
  69.    "Excelsior is supplied as is.  The authors disclaim all
  70.    warranties, expressed or implied, including, without limitation,
  71.    the warranties of merchantability and of fitness for any purpose.
  72.    The authors assume no liability for damages, direct or conse-
  73.    quential, which may result from the use of Excelsior."

  75.    Excelsior is a "shareware program" and is provided at no charge
  76.    to the user for evaluation.  Feel free to share it with your
  77.    friends, but please do not give it away altered or as part of
  78.    another system.  The essence of "user-supported" software is to
  79.    provide personal computer users with quality software without
  80.    high prices, and yet to provide incentive for programmers to
  81.    continue to develop new products.  If you find this program
  82.    useful and find that you are using Excelsior and continue to use
  83.    Excelsior after a TEN (10) day trial period, you must make a reg-
  84.    istration payment of $20 (US) to Castle Software.  The $20 registration
  85.    fee will license one copy for use on any one computer at any one
  86.    time.  You must treat this software just like a book.  An example
  87.    is that this software may be used by any number of people and may
  88.    be freely moved from one computer location to another, so long as
  89.    there is no possibility of it being used at one location while
  90.    it's being used at another -  just as a book cannot be read by two
  91.    different persons at the same time.

  93.    Anyone distributing Excelsior for any kind of remuneration must
  94.    comply with the restrictions detailed in the VENDOR.DOC file
  95.    (supplied on this disk).  If the vendor is in compliance with all
  96.    of the specified restrictions, no written permission is necessary
  97.    beyond the VENDOR.DOC file and such distributors may begin offer-
  98.    ing Excelsior immediately.  (However, Castle Software must still be
  99.    advised so that the distributor can be kept up-to-date with the
  100.    latest version of Excelsior.)

  102.    You are encouraged to pass a copy of Excelsior along to your
  103.    friends for evaluation.  Please encourage them to register their
  104.    copy if they find that they can use it.  All registered users
  105.    will receive a copy of the latest version of Excelsior, printed
  106.    manuals, the opportunity to obtain a hint book, and discounts on
  107.    other Castle Software products.
