  11. SYNOPSIS
  12.      tar -c[bfvw] device block filename...
  13.      tar -r[bvw] device block [filename...]
  14.      tar -t[fv] device
  15.      tar -u[bvw] device block
  16.      tar -x[flmovw] device [filename...]

  18. DESCRIPTION
  19.      Tar reads and writes archive files which conform to the
  20.      Archive/Interchange File Format specified in IEEE Std.
  21.      1003.1-1988.

  23.      Options
  24.      The following options are available:
  25.  
  26.      -c        Creates a new archive; writing begins at the
  27.                beginning of the archive, instead of after the
  28.                last file.
  29.  
  30.      -r        Writes names files to the end of the archive.
  31.  
  32.      -t        Lists the names of all of the files in the
  33.                archive.
  34.  
  35.      -u        Causes named files to be added to the archive if
  36.                they are not already there, or have been modified
  37.                since last written into the archive.  This implies
  38.                the -r option.

  40.      -x        Extracts named files from the archive.  If a named
  41.                file matches a directory whose contents had been
  42.                written onto the archive, that directory is recur-
  43.                sively extracted.  If a named file in the archive
  44.                does not exist on the system, the file is create
  45.                with the same mode as the one in the archive,
  46.                except that the set-user-id and get-group-id modes
  47.                are not set unless the user has appropriate
  48.                privileges.

  50.      If the files exist, their modes are not changed except as
  51.      described above.  The owner, group and modification time are
  52.      restored if possible.  If no filename argument is given, the
  53.      entire contents of the archive is extracted.  Note that if
  54.      several files with the same name are in the archive, the
  55.      last one will overwrite all earlier ones.

  57.      -b        Causes tar to use the next argument on the command
  58.                line as the blocking factor for tape records.  The
  59.                default is 1; the maximum is 20.  This option
  60.

  74.                should only be used with raw magnetic tape
  75.                archives.  Normally, the block size is determined
  76.                automatically when reading tapes.
  77.  
  78.      -f        Causes tar to use the next argument on the command
  79.                line as the name of the archive instead of the
  80.                default, which is usually a tape drive.  If - is
  81.                specified as a filename tar writes to the standard
  82.                output or reads from the standard input, whichever
  83.                is appropriate for the options given.  Thus, tar
  84.                can be used as the head or tail of a pipeline.

  86.      -l        Tells tar to report if it cannot resolve all of
  87.                the links to the files being archived.  If -l is
  88.                not specified, no error messages are written to
  89.                the standard output.  This modifier is only valid
  90.                with the -c, -r and -u options.

  92.      -m        Tells tar not to restore the modification times.
  93.                The modification time of the file will be the time
  94.                of extraction.  This modifier is invalid with th
  95.                -t option.

  97.      -o        Causes extracted files to take on the user and
  98.                group identifier of the user running the program
  99.                rather than those on the archive.  This modifier
  100.                is only valid with the -x option.

  102.      -v        Causes tar to operate verbosely.  Usually, tar
  103.                does its work silently, but the v modifier causes
  104.                it to print the name of each file it processes,
  105.                preceded by the option letter.  With the -t
  106.                option, v gives more information about the archive
  107.                entries than just the name.

  109.      -w        Causes tar to print the action to be taken, fol-
  110.                lowed by the name of the file, and then wait for
  111.                the user's confirmation.  If a word beginning with
  112.                y is given, the action is performed.  Any other
  113.                input means "no".  This modifier is invalid with
  114.                the -t option.
  115.  
  116. FILES
  117.      /dev/tty  used to prompt the user for information when the
  118.                -i or -y options are specified.
