- Instructions for using the DOS on-line HELP facility from the installation
- disk:
-
- 1. Insert the DOS help disk in floppy drive A: [If you have two DOS help
- disks, use the one marked 1 of 2.] The examples and some advanced help
- topics are only on the second disk.
-
- 2. Make the floppy disk drive the default drive (by typing A: and then
- pressing the Enter, Return, or <──┘ key).
-
- 3. Type HELP and press the Enter, Return, or <──┘ key.
-
- Instructions for installing the DOS on-line HELP utility on your hard disk:
-
- 1. Decide what directory you want the programs on the installation disk to
- reside on. The directory should be one included in the PATH line of your
- AUTOEXEC.BAT file. [If you don't have an AUTOEXEC.BAT file or a PATH line
- in that file, read about them with HELP before trying to install HELP.]
- Copy the files helpout.exe, switchar.com, and help.bat from the first
- installation disk to that directory.
-
- 2. Decide what directory you want the data for the help utility to be in. A
- suggestion is \HELP on your C: drive. The data takes about a megabyte of
- space. Use the editor of your choice to change the next to last line of
- the help.bat file copied in step 1. Replace \help by C:\HELP, where C: is
- your chosen drive and \HELP is your chosen directory for the data.
-
- 3. Copy the cp.exe program on the first installation disk to your hard disk,
- and then use it to copy all the data to your chosen directory, with the
- command line
- cp -puR a:\help C:\HELP
- where C: is your chosen drive and \HELP is your chosen directory. (If
- you have two DOS help disks, you will need to execute this command once
- for each disk.)
-
- 4. Go get a cup of coffee. It will take about 10 minutes for the cp program
- to copy over all the data from each disk. Then type HELP and press the
- Enter, Return, or <──┘ key to try out DOS help.
