  3. This internal command displays the version number of the operating system on 
  4. the screen. Also shows whether the version was manufactured by IBM (PC-DOS) 
  5. or someone else (MS-DOS). In general, separately purchased programs that will
  6. work with one version of DOS will also work with higher-numbered versions.  
  7. This is NOT true for DOS external commands, which must match their required 
  8. version exactly. See the NEW_TERMS EXTERNAL_COMMANDS topic for a list of the
  9. external commands.
