- Function Key
-
- A function key is a key on the left hand side of the keyboard or on the top
- of the keyboard labeled
- ┌──┐
- │Fn│
- └──┘
- where n is a number from 1 to 40. By pressing a function key, a pre-defined
- function is executed. What the function is depends on the program executing
- at the moment. There are usually either two vertical rows of function keys
- at the left end of the keyboard (F1 through F10), or a single row of function
- keys along the very top of the keyboard (F1 through F12), or both.
-
- Extended Function Keys
-
- The function keys F11 through F40 are the so-called "extended" function keys.
- Shift-F1 is called F11, Ctrl-F1 is called F21, Alt-F1 is called F31, and so
- on, so that a total of forty function keys can be defined. On a keyboard that
- physically has F1 through F12, Shift-, Ctrl-, and Alt- can be used with F1
- through F12 to define up to 48 extended function keys, but the "extended" keys
- for F11 and F12 don't have standard names.
