- ASCII Character Code
- Every character that is displayed on the screen or printed on paper has a
- numeric code that is stored internally by the computer and used by programs.
- The standard set of characters used are called ASCII, which stands for
- American Standard Code for Information Interchange.
-
- The numeric codes range from 0 through 255 (decimal) or 0 through FF
- (hexadecimal or base-16). A fairly complete set of cross-reference tables
- between the decimal, hexadecimal, displayed character, Ctrl-key (if any), and
- Mnemonic (if any) for the ASCII character codes are given here. The only
- omissions are the displayed character for those codes that have no such
- character. ANY of the character codes (except 0) can be entered from the
- keyboard by holding the ALT key down, entering the decimal value for the
- character on the numeric keypad (on the right side of the keyboard, not the
- row of keys along the top), and releasing the ALT key. ALT-168, for example,
- produces the Spanish question mark, ¿.
