- MSECURE
- =======
-
- MSECURE is a small TSR (5K) which acts as a NetWare Secure Screen Saver.
- When loaded, the TSR will monitor the workstation for inactivity. When
- inactive for a pre-determined amount of time, the screen is blanked.
-
- The workstation will monitor the keyboard for any passwords entered. Pressing
- RETURN signifies that end of a password entry. Because the monitor is blanked,
- there is no visual confirmation. Because the password verification can take up
- to several seconds on some servers, a signal is sounded to signify that MSECURE
- is processing your password. A draining sound is made for inaccurate passwords.
-
- THE DEMONSTRATION PROGRAM DOES NO PASSWORD VERIFICATION. It will unblank the
- screen after pressing RETURN. The demonstration program is used to prove
- functionality with your applications.
-
- MSECURE was built using the same proven technology as MLOGOUT (the Auto-Logout
- TSR from Dana Consultants). MLOGOUT has been available for almost 2 years.
-
- The Screen Saver portion of the program was built with Rhode Island Soft
- System's BLANK-IT product. This screen saver has also been available for
- several years and provides reliable blanking functionality.

-
- Options can be specified on command lines like so:
-
- MSECURE 10 [-]hrdw
-
- The '-' is optional (as shown with []).
-
- Options for MSECURE are case sensitive. Most options are self-explanitory.
-
- Misc interrupts are Video, Communications, and Printer.
-
-
- Server configuration
- --------------------
-
- You MUST use the following command on the file server for MSECURE to function
- properly.
-
- SET ALLOW UNENCRYPTED PASSWORDS=ON
-
- This command will enable applications to send a password verification to the
- server without having to know Novell's key. Failure to use this command will
- prevent MSECURE from working properly, and an error message appearing on the
- console:
-
- "Station X attempted to use an unencrypted password call"
-
-
- Notes on the Screen Blanking portion
- ------------------------------------
-
- MSECURE uses the blanking portion of the BLANK-IT Screen Saver available from
- Rhode Island Soft Systems. Their screen saver has been proven reliable over the
- years. This screen saver is unique in that it does not "blank" a screen, it
- prevents any data from being displayed on the screen. Any screen updates that
- may occur during the blanking process continue to update the video memory. When
- the screen is unblanked, the current screen is shown! This prevents data from
- being displayed on the screen after the blanking.
-
-
-
- Reconfiguring MSECURE after loading
- -----------------------------------
-
- MSECURE can be reconfigured after loading. This is useful for
- administrators who wish to tailor the program to specific needs.
- For example, an administrator can load MSECURE with a default logout
- time of 45 minutes by using the following command:
-
- MSECURE 45 /m
-
- If you wanted to extend this time during the execution of WordPerfect,
- you could add the following lines to your batch file:
-
- MSECURE 2 /hc
- [wp]
- MSECURE 45 /mc
-
- By adding these lines to your batch file, the logout time would be changed
- to 2 hours during execution of WordPerfect, and then reset upon exit. The
- 'c' option MUST be used for changes to take effect. You also would need
- to specify all addition parameter during each use of the MSECURE command.
-
- The ability to reconfigure MSECURE options can be disable during the inital
- load by specifing the 'X' option.

- General Notices
- ===============
-
- A note about TSRs and MSECURE
- -----------------------------
-
- Every attempt to make MSECURE as generic a TSR as possible has been made.
- We cannot, however, gaurentee that MSECURE will work with all of your TSRs.
- This is especially true of TSRs that monitor for keyboard input, or for a
- "hotkey". If you are encountering problems with MSECURE, please try loading
- MSECURE before or after these other TSRs.
-
- I will try to keep track of programs that present a conflict with MSECURE.
- If you find a conflict, and possibly a solution, please drop me a line so that
- I may keep this database up to date.
-
- The following programs have been identified that do not allow MSECURE to
- perform its function:
-
- IBM Display Write 5
-
- Some problems have been reported using MSECURE warnings while specifying
- the Stealth option of QEMM (ST:).
-
- Thank you! We welcome any suggestions or comments that you may have!

- 1.1 Benefits from Using MSECURE
- ================================
-
- Users logged into a network when their computers are idle pose a
- significant security risk because the workstation can be used by
- unauthorized persons. By using a secure screen saver, the workstation
- can be "locked" until an authorized user enters a correct password.
-
-
- 1.2 How the MSECURE Utility Work
- =================================
-
- This utility monitors workstations for activity by monitoring
- keyboard and disk activity. After a period of inactivity, the
- screen saver will clear the screen and wait for a password to be
- entered.
-
- A user is considered to be inactive when:
-
- ■ Nothing is typed on the keyboard within a specified period
- of time
-
- ■ No disk requests are made within a specified period of
- time
-
- Note: MSECURE will work on application that are using Graphics modes, but
- is disabled during the execution of Windows.
-
-
- 2.1 Install MSECURE
- ====================
-
- You can install MSECURE on a network server or on the hard disk
- of each workstation connected to the network. While the choice is
- up to you, consider the following advantages to installing
- MSECURE on the network server:
-
- ■ When you receive updates of MSECURE you will update
- only the server instead of every computer on the network
-
- ■ Users cannot accidentally delete the program file if it is
- installed on the server
-
-
- To install MSECURE on:
-
- Network Server
- --------------
-
- Copy MSECURE.COM into the server's Public directory.
-
- Individual workstations
- -----------------------
-
- Copy MSECURE.COM into one of the directories named in the
- Path command
-
-
- Once you have installed MSECURE.COM, proceed to the instructions for
- executing MSECURE.
-
-
- 2.2 Execute MSECURE
- ====================
-
- You have three options for executing MSECURE, regardless of
- whether you installed it on the network server or on individual
- workstations. This section explains each option, as well as the
- command options available to you.
-
-
-
- 2.2.3 Executing MSECURE from a System Login Script
- ---------------------------------------------------
-
- You can execute MSECURE from the system login script. When
- MSECURE is executed from a system login script:
-
- ■ You must modify the system login script on the network
- server to include the MSECURE command.
-
- ■ Each user will the same set of command options.
-
- ■ MSECURE is executed automatically each time the user logs
- on to the network.
-
- To execute MSECURE from the system login script, include the
- MSECURE command as an EXIT routine. Refer to page 5 for a
- detailed description of the command, its syntax, and its options.
-
- Consider the following points when executing MSECURE from a
- system login script:
-
- ■ MSECURE must be included as an EXIT routine to
- conserve workstation memory and prevent fragmentation.
-
- ■ User login scripts are not performed when an EXIT
- routine is used.
-
-
- 2.2.4 Execute MSECURE from the DOS Prompt
- ------------------------------------------
-
- You may choose to allow your network users to execute MSECURE
- from a DOS prompt after they log on to the network.
-
- To execute MSECURE from a DOS prompt, simply type the
- MSECURE command any time the DOS prompt is displayed on the
- screen.
-
