  80. The installation is covered in the "online.doc" file. 
  81. You can view this file with WordPad.

  83. The installation process can be customized by modifying the "mga.ini"
  84. file on the diskette. Examples of customization options include:
  85. default installation path, default driver performance switches,
  86. default schemes, etc. The file is self-documented. This type of 
  87. customization should be carried out by advanced users only.

  89. Registry Settings

  92. PowerDesk settings are kept in the Windows 95 registry, under the keys:

  98. Notes, Problems, and Limitations
  99. --------------------------------

  101. - DirectDraw, Direct3D and DirectVideo support
  102.  
  103.   The DirectDraw driver we provide is compatible with DirectX 2 and includes 
  104.   Direct3D support. For our DirectDraw/Direct3D driver to be called, and benefit 
  105.   from hardware accelerations, Microsoft DirectX 2 MUST be installed, even 
  106.   for applications originally made for DirectX 1.
  107.  
  108.   For your convenience we have placed a copy of the Microsoft DirectX 2 
  109.   redistributable code on our Web site. If you are getting this driver from a
  110.   Matrox CD-ROM, you will also find a copy of DirectX 2 on the CD.
  111.  
  112.   If you have a Millennium card, the DirectX 2 setup will detect it and print 
  113.   the following messages:
  114.     
  115.     "Setup has detected display drivers that have not been tested with
  116.     DirectX. To get the best game performance, Setup can replace your existing
  117.     drivers."
  118.  
  119.     "Replace existing display drivers with DirectX drivers?"
  120.  
  121.   Answer "No" to the question. Otherwise, DirectX 2 would install its
  122.   Millennium display driver which is not as optimized and does not
  123.   support PowerDesk. 
  124.  
  125.   Note that the Microsoft DirectX 2 code does not include DirectVideo-enabled
  126.   codecs. Hence for faster playback of Indeo and Cinepak AVI files, you should
  127.   install the Microsoft DirectVideo redistributable files. This package is 
  128.   available on our Web site and on our latest CD-ROM.

  130. - Bus Mastering support under Matrox Mystique
  131.  
  132.   The Matrox Mystique supports bus mastering, which can accelerate 3D frame 
  133.   rate and video playback in Windows 95. A switch is available in the MGA 
  134.   Advanced Settings sheet to enable/disable bus mastering.
  135.  
  136.   Please take note of the following regarding bus mastering in this version:
  137.  
  138.   - bus mastering support is not yet implemented for video playback, hence 
  139.   performance will be the same whether the switch is on or off. 
  140.  
  141.   - bus mastering support is however implemented in Direct3D and upcoming 
  142.   Mystique bundled games.
  143.  
  144.   - some early PCI systems do not properly assign an interrupt to graphics
  145.   boards such as the Mystique. Bus mastering requires an interrupt, so 
  146.   failure to get an interrupt will result in 3D applications not using 
  147.   this performance feature.
  148.  
  149. - PowerDesk MGA Settings property sheet page vs the Microsoft Settings page
  150.  
  151.   When selecting a vertical or horizontal desktop with the MGA Settings
  152.   page, the Microsoft Settings page is not updated with the new desktop.
  153.   Closing and reopening the Display Properties will refresh the Settings
  154.   page.
  155.  
  156.   When selecting a new monitor in the MGA Monitor page, the Microsoft
  157.   Settings page is not updated with the resolutions that match the monitor.  
  158.   Closing and reopening the Display Properties will refresh the available
  159.   resolutions in the Settings page.
  160.  
  161.   Using the Microsoft Settings page to change from a horizontal or vertical
  162.   desktop to a non-virtual desktop mode, may result in a different desktop than
  163.   the expected one. Rebooting the system will fix the problem.
  164.  
  165. - Media XL drivers compatibility
  166.  
  167.   This version of MGA PowerDesk is not compatible with the Media XL drivers
  168.   1.03 and earlier.  If you want to use the MediaXL drivers and utilities,
  169.   you will need to install at least version 1.10 of the Media XL drivers.
  170.   The latest drivers are available on our Web site.
  171.  
  172. - Adobe Type Manager limitation
  173.  
  174.   When Adobe Type Manager is installed, you cannot run the driver if
  175.   the "Advanced Graphics Acceleration Settings" is set to none. Note
  176.   that ATM is installed as part of Adobe Acrobat Reader. This is an
  177.   Adobe problem documented in the Windows 95 "display.txt" file.
  178.  
  179. - Monitors in interlaced mode
  180.  
  181.   Some old monitors such as the IBM 8514 and the NEC 3D do not support
  182.   non-interlaced mode in all resolutions. The MGA driver does not
  183.   properly handle interlaced mode under the Windows 95 monitor
  184.   mechanism, so if you own one of these monitors, please use the MGA
  185.   Monitor Program.

  187. - DirectDraw and Automatic Power Management
  188.  
  189.   As stated in "Microsoft DirectX release Notes" dated September 30,
  190.   1995, A DirectDraw game might be unable to restore properly if it
  191.   is suspended by Automatic Power Management utilities.

  231.   More information is available in the WordPad file "online.doc". This 
  232.   file is included on your Matrox floppy disk, and installed in your 
  233.   \Program Files\Matrox MGA PowerDesk\ folder.

  236. MGA Diagnostic program
  237. ----------------------
  238.  
  239. Close all other programs before running MGA Diagnostic. 
  240.  
  241. The MGA Diagnostic program tests the bus mastering feature of your system and 
  242. if another program is using bus mastering at the same time (a 3D game for example), 
  243. a system error may occur.
  244.  
  245.  
  246. IRQSET.EXE program
  247. ------------------
  248.  
  249. If you have a 3D program for Windows 95 that doesn't start or stops 
  250. running, you may be having a problem with bus mastering. The Matrox card
  251. needs an Interrupt Request (IRQ) number for bus mastering to work properly 
  252. and some computers do not automatically give the Matrox card an IRQ. You 
  253. can manually assign your Matrox card an IRQ through the IRQSET.EXE program 
  254. we provide.
  255.  
  256. First, check for an IRQ number:
  257.  
  258.   (1) Right-click on the "My Computer" icon on the Windows 95 desktop.
  259.   (2) Click on the "Properties" menu item.
  260.   (3) Click on the "Device Manager" tab.
  261.   (4) Click on the "Properties" button.
  262.   (5) Check if the MGA driver appears in the IRQ list. 
  263.       If it does, there is no need to manually assign an IRQ and you
  264.       can stop here.
  265.       IF NOT, note which IRQ number between 10 and 12 is not used and
  266.       continue with the instructions below.
  267.  
  268. To manually assign an IRQ:
  269.  
  270.   (1) Open your "autoexec.bat" file with the Windows 95 Notepad program. 
  271.       Your autoexec.bat file is in the root directory of your boot drive.
  272.  
  273.   (2) Add a line to your autoexec.bat with the path to "IRQSET", 
  274.       followed by the IRQ you want to use (the unused number you noted 
  275.       above). For example, to assign your Matrox card IRQ 10, insert the
  276.       following line in your autoexec.bat (INCLUDING the quotation marks):
  277.  
  278.           "C:\Program Files\Matrox MGA PowerDesk\IRQSET" A
  279.  
  280.       (The path you use MIGHT be different if you have a customized 
  281.       installation of MGA PowerDesk on your computer.)
  282.  
  283.       The above example is for IRQ 10. To use a different IRQ, replace 
  284.       "A" with ONE of the following letters (capitalized):
  285.  
  286.           B (for IRQ 11)
  287.           C (for IRQ 12)
  288.  
  289.   (3) Save the changes to the autoexec.bat and exit Notepad.
  290.  
  291.   (4) Restart your computer for the changes to take effect.
