  14.        This  manual  page  documents the GNU version of uuppddaatteeddbb,
  15.        which updates file name databases used by GNU llooccaattee.  The
  16.        file  name  databases  contain lists of files that were in
  17.        particular directory trees when the  databases  were  last
  18.        updated.   The file name of the default database is deter-
  19.        mined  when  llooccaattee  and  uuppddaatteeddbb  are   configured   and
  20.        installed.   The  frequency  with  which the databases are
  21.        updated and the directories for which they contain entries
  22.        depend  on how often uuppddaatteeddbb is run, and with which argu-
  23.        ments.

  25.        In networked environments, it often makes sense to build a
  26.        database  at  the  root of each filesystem, containing the
  27.        entries for that filesystem.  uuppddaatteeddbb  is  then  run  for
  28.        each filesystem on the fileserver where that filesystem is
  29.        on a local disk, to prevent thrashing the network.   Users
  30.        can  select which databases llooccaattee searches using an envi-
  31.        ronment variable or command line option;  see  llooccaattee(1L).
  32.        Databases can not be concatenated together.

  34.        The  file  name  database format changed starting with GNU
  35.        ffiinndd and llooccaattee version 4.0 to allow machines with diffent
  36.        byte orderings to share the databases.  The new GNU llooccaattee
  37.        can read both the old and new database formats.   However,
  38.        old  versions of llooccaattee and ffiinndd produce incorrect results
  39.        if given a new-format database.
