- | BACKGROUND
- -------------------------
- I created Night Bird originally to serve as one of several example
- programs for my 3D graphics class library XYZ++. It was designed to
- demonstrate the animation of a solid object moving in real time.
- Although still part of the XYZ++ package, Night Bird has now flown
- into the shareware world as an independent product.
-
- In version 2.0, I redesigned the bird model, and spent some time
- studying the wing movements of real birds in an attempt to increase
- the accuracy of the animation. Then I incorporated random pine trees
- into Night Bird's background world for an added touch of realism.
-
-
- -------------------------
- | PROGRAM NOTES
- -------------------------
- Night Bird will begin by displaying only a few ground points and
- one tree, and will continue adding points and trees until it has
- reached the rate of 20 frames per second. Due to the random
- placement of the detail, this timing estimate will vary from one run
- to another. If you find the program to be consistently running too
- fast or too slow, you may adjust the speed by specifying a different
- frame rate.
-
- For example, if you type NBIRD 15, the animation will only attempt
- to reach a rate of 15 frames per second, which will allow it to
- display more ground detail. If you have a very fast machine, you
- might want to try a higher value to increase the smoothness of the
- animation.
-
- Night Bird has been optimized for 386 machines with VGA graphics,
- and will only run on that hardware. If you are not sure what type of
- machine you are using, go ahead and try the program, by typing NBIRD
- at the DOS prompt. It will politely inform you if it does not find
- the right stuff.
-
- You may QUIT the program by pressing any key. After the first
- keypress, a shareware message will display. You can quit that screen
- the same way -- by pressing any key. The registered version of Night
- Bird will exit the first time you press a key and does not display a
- shareware screen.
-

- | SHAREWARE OFFER
- -------------------------
- Night Bird 2.0 is a shareware product. You are encouraged to make
- copies of it, and distribute them far and wide, as long as you don't
- charge anything for them, or alter the program in any way.
-
- Feel free to pass Night Bird along to your friends, associates, or
- to other computer enthusiasts on your favorite BBS. Please ONLY
- distribute the self-extracting, or zipped installation file, so the
- complete package including this shareware info will remain intact.
-
- Registration for Night Bird is $12.00, which includes shipping and
- handling. When you register, you will receive the most recent
- version of Night Bird -- version 2.1 -- plus two bonus programs:
- WaterVision, and Liberty Bell.
-
-
- | NIGHT BIRD 2.1
- The registered version of Night Bird features several new keyboard
- commands for controlling your distance, camera zoom and elevation, as
- well as bird height and flight speed. And of course, you won't get
- an advertisement screen when you exit the program. Night Bird 2.1
- requires a 386 computer with VGA graphics, or better.
-
-
- | WATERVISION 1.0
- This is another in a series of interactive animations which
- celebrate the dynamic beauty of the natural world. You are in
- control of up to nine realistic water fountains.
-
- You can change the behavior of the fountains with one set of
- controls, or use other controls to move around in the scene. You can
- float above the fountains, orbit around them, or stand right in the
- middle of them if you don't mind getting wet. The graphical control
- panel is fun and easy to use, with either your mouse or keyboard.
-
- Realism is achieved in WaterVision by independently animating every
- drop of water -- and there can be hundreds of them depending on the
- speed of your computer. Watch the water surge into the air, then
- fall gracefully back to earth by the force of gravity.
-
- WaterVision requires a 386 computer with VGA graphics, or better.
-
-
- | LIBERTY BELL 1.1
- In Liberty Bell, you are provided with your own personal slot
- machine that uses the same symbols, arranged in the same order, and
- displays the same payoffs as the real thing.
-
- This is an authentic simulation of the 21-Bell Nickel Slot
- Machine. I found a description of the machine's design several years
- ago in the book, SCARNE'S NEW COMPLETE GUIDE TO GAMBLING, by John
- Scarne, and have been perfecting this simulation ever since.
-
- Liberty Bell requires EGA graphics or better.
-
-
- -------------------------
- | XYZ++
- -------------------------
- If you are interested in the XYZ++ class library, you may read more
- about it by running the program READXYZ, which you should have
- received with this package.
-
- The registration for XYZ++ is $35.00, which includes shipping and
- handling. It includes the source code to Night Bird, WaterVision,
- Liberty Bell, a demonstration of a virtual reality control panel, the
- complete source code to all of the library class functions, seven
- other small sample programs to get you started, and a printed manual.
-
- If you did not receive the program READXYZ with your package, and
- you are interested in XYZ++, let me know, and I will be happy to
- forward you a copy of the description.
-
-
- -------------------------
- | ORDERING
- -------------------------
- To become a registered user, and receive Night Bird version 2.1,
- WaterVision, and Liberty Bell, send a check or money order for $12.00
- to the address shown on the program's shareware screen.
-
- To order the XYZ++ class library, which includes Night Bird
- registration, and source code to all of the programs described above,
- send a $35.00 check or money order.
-
- For your convenience, I have included an order form. To print the
- form, type ORDER at the DOS prompt, then press ALT P.
-
- All payments must be made in U.S. dollars, and checks must be drawn
- on a U.S. bank.
-
- Convenient online registration is also available for those of you
- with an account on Compuserve. Type GO SWREG, and look for product
- Id: 1172. Your registration fee will be billed to you along with
- your normal Compuserve charges.
-
- If you have any further questions about Night Bird or XYZ++, feel
- free to contact me via Compuserve, Internet, or phone.
