- PROCEDURE FOR "WHOIS" REGISTRATION
-
- This file contains information for individual users wishing to
- register in the WHOIS database maintained by the DDN Network
- Information Center (DDN NIC) on the host NIC.DDN.MIL (192.112.36.5).
- The user registration template below has been created to standardize
- the registration procedure and help insure that the DDN NIC will
- receive complete information about each user. Below are the
- 1) instructions for filling in the User Registration template; 2)
- instructions for sending the template to the DDN NIC; 3) a sample
- template, and 4) a blank template for you to fill in.

- Any (military) DDN user with electronic mail access may be included in the
- NIC WHOIS database. Additionally, administrators and contact points for
- domains, networks, hosts, and ASNs must be included in the NIC WHOIS
- database.

- I. HOW TO FILL IN THE USER REGISTRATION TEMPLATE
-
- Using an editor of your choice, create a file containing the blank
- template at the end of this file, and fill in all relevant fields.
- Each field should begin on a new line. Detailed instructions for
- the format of each section are given below under SPECIFIC INSTRUCTIONS
- FOR EACH TEMPLATE FIELD.

- II. WHERE TO SEND THE COMPLETED TEMPLATE

- The completed template should be sent online to REGISTRAR@NIC.DDN.MIL.

- The name may be entered in any of the following formats:

- Lastname, Firstname I.

- Lastname, Firstname I., Jr.

- where "I." = an initial

- Do not include military rank or professional titles.

- U.S. MAIL ADDRESS - some standard procedures:

- Line 1: The name of your organization; do not use acronyms.
- Line 2: Information such as the department name, code, or attention line.
- Line 3: (optional) The building name or number, room number.
- Line 4: Your street address or Post Office Box.
- Line 5: City, state and zip code. If you commonly use a 9 digit zip
- code, enter that.

- This is the name of the user's "home" host. Enter the OFFICIAL
- HOSTNAME rather than an approved nickname.

- PRIMARY LOGIN NAME:

- This is the primary login name/username/directory name of the
- user on the authorizing host.

- If the login name is a part of the security system on your host
- and therefore should be kept secret, do not enter it in this
- field.

- The primary login name may be a group directory name if it is the
- only one the individual uses.

- PRIMARY NETWORK MAILBOX:
-
- This is the mailbox where this individual prefers to receive
- mail. This may or may not be his or her primary login name on
- the host. If mail addresses are case dependent on your host,
- specify the mailbox string accordingly. Otherwise enter the
- string in upper case.

- Separate the username and hostname parts of the mailbox by "@".

- Format: USERNAME@HOSTNAME
- Example: SMITH@NIC.DDN.MIL

- For those hosts whose official hostname is a Fully Qualified
- Domain Name (FQDN), enter the FQDN in the hostname part of the
- mailbox. The FQDN is preferred.

- TERMINATION DATE:

- The DEROS date (Date Eligible for Return from Overseas) for military
- users, estimated date of graduation for students, estimated
- elapse date for temporary users.
