  5. DDN users interested in Kermit should FTP from the Columbia host
  6.  
  7.                         WATSON.CC.COLUMBIA.EDU

  10. OBTAINING KERMIT OVER THE INTERNET
  11.  
  12. FTP to the WATSON.CC.COLUMBIA.EDU host and connect to the kermit subdirectory.
  13. First get the file "read.me". The file is included here for your information:

  17. NOTE TO ANONYMOUS FTP USERS AND OTHER BROWSERS:

  19. These are the Kermit files.  They are organized into subdirectories of this
  20. directory:
  21.  
  22. kermit/a/*  -  Tape A  -  Popular micros
  23. kermit/b/*  -  Tape B  -  Popular mainframes & minis
  24. kermit/c/*  -  Tape C  -  Less popular micros
  25. kermit/d/*  -  Tape D  -  Less popular minis & mainframes
  26. kermit/e/*  -  Tape E  -  Documentation, mail archives, etc
  27. kermit/test/*    -        Test versions, not ready for distribution yet
  28. kermit/cu/*      -        Columbia-specific files (MS-Kermit scripts, etc)

  30. You may cd (or cwd) to any of these directories, and get any files you
  31. want.

  33. File names all start with letters and are of the form name.typ (lowercase!)
  34. and will normally appear in alphabetical order in a directory listing or on a
  35. tape.
  36.  
  37. Files whose names start with "aa" -- normally appearing at the top of a
  38. directory listing -- give general information about Kermit.  There should be
  39. an identical set of "aa" files at the top of each Kermit subdirectory.

  41. Kermit programs are stored in the Kermit distribution areas with related
  42. files grouped together using filename prefixes; the names of all the files
  43. for a certain implementation all start with the same 2- or 3-character
  44. prefix, for instance all the files for MS-DOS Kermit have names starting
  45. with "ms", the files names for VAX/VMS Kermit all start with "vms".

  47. The following files describe what's available in the Kermit distribution:

  49. aafiles.hlp - Explanation of what files are available and how they are named.
  50. aanetw.hlp -- Information about network access to Kermit files.
  51. aanoks.hlp -- Information about the Oklahoma State U Kermit archive.
  52. aatape.hlp -- Information about Kermit distribution tape formats.

  54. Files whose names start with "aav" are brief, complete lists of existing,
  55. available Kermit versions, sorted in various ways:

  57. aavers.hlp -- Master list, in no particular order
  58. aavnew.hlp -- Listed in reverse chronological order of release date
  59. aavops.hlp -- Listed alphabetically by operating system only
  60. aavlng.hlp -- Listed alphabetically by programming language
  61. aavpfx.hlp -- Listed alphabetically by prefix, regardless of tape
  62. aavsys.hlp -- Listed alphabetically by machine and operating system
  63. aavtap.hlp -- Listed by tape (A,B,C,D,E), then alphabetically by file prefix

  65. The next file lists the Kermit programs we are still waiting for:

  67. aawait.hlp -- A list of Kermit implementations reportedly under development

  69. And there are some bureaucratic files, whose names start with AAX:

  71. aaxfly.doc -- The Kermit flyer and mail-order form.
  72. aaxfly.ps  -- A postscript version of the flyer and order form.
  73. aaxcom.doc -- The policy on commercial use and distribution of Kermit.

  75. Finally, there is aavers.upd, which lists the Kermit programs released since
  76. the last time the flyer was updated.

  78. A group of files for a particular version is often headed by an "aaaa" file,
  79. for example "ckaaaa.hlp" or "msaaaa.hlp".  These files explain the
  80. organization of the files for that version.

  87. There is a network mailing list for Kermit information; it is available to
  88. users of Bitnet and the Internet and most networks that are connected to
  89. them, including Bitnet, Usenet, Mailnet, CCnet, and others.  To get on the
  90. mailing list, send mail to

  94. There is a CREN sub-distribution list, I-KERMIT@UGA; Bitnet subscribers 
  95. can join by sending the SUB command with your name.

  100. To make contributions to the list, Bitnet subscribers should send mail to
