- Introduction~
- ------------
-
- Algebra Drills is a series of randomly
- generated exercises designed to
- challenge a student's knowledge in
- 22 areas of algebra.
-
- The program is intended for algebra
- students on the secondary and
- postsecondary levels. Exercises range
- from basic number properties to
- advanced trigonometric functions.
-
-
- Making a Backup Diskette~
- ------------------------
-
- It is important to make a backup copy
- of your Algebra Drills diskette in
- case your original diskette is lost or
- damaged. If necessary, refer to your
- Disk Operating System (DOS) book for
- information about using the DISKCOPY
- command.
-
- Store the original diskette in a safe
- place and use the backup copy to run
- the program.
-
-
- 2
-
-
- Installing on a Fixed Disk~
- --------------------------
-
- Follow the steps below to install the
- Algebra Drills program on your fixed
- disk:
-
- 1. Create an Algebra Drills
- subdirectory on your fixed disk.
- You might want to name it ALGEBRA
- or something similar.
-
- 2. Insert your Algebra Drills
- diskette in drive A and enter: A:
-
- 3. At the DOS prompt A>, enter:
-
- copy: a:*.* c:\algebra
-
- where ALGEBRA represents your
- Algebra Drills subdirectory.
-
-
- Getting Started~
- ---------------
-
- Follow these steps to start Algebra
- Drills:
-
- 1. At the DOS prompt, type:
-
- algebra
-
- 2. Press Enter to start the program.
-
- The Algebra Drills title screen
- appears.
-
- 3. Press Enter to continue.
-
- The Algebra Drills Main Menu
- screen appears.
-
-
- 3
-
-
- The Main Menu~
- -------------
-
- This section describes each of the six
- algebra topics on the Main Menu.

-
- Introductory Algebra~
-
-
- This topic introduces you to the
- fundamental properties of algebraic
- expressions. Questions cover number
- properties, inverses, absolute values,
- integers, square roots, and
- inequalities.
-
-
- Polynomial Equations~
-
-
- This topic includes comparing and
- solving monomial and polynomial
- equations. It also includes identify-
- ing positive roots, solving solution
- sets, and finding the smallest or
- largest values of polynomials.
-
-
- 4
-
-
- Operations with Fractions~
-
-
- Select this topic for drills involving
- fractions, ratios, and proportions.
- Drills cover adding, subtracting,
- multiplying, and dividing fractions and
- solving, simplifying, and comparing
- ratios and proportions.
-
-
- Linear Functions~
-
-
- This topic reviews the different
- components of linear functions, and
- asks you to identify the slope, x and y
- values, or the y-intercept of
- y=mx+b equations. Drills also cover
- factoring lateral functions and solving
- systems of equations.
-
-
- Geometry~
-
-
- Drills for this topic review geometric
- properties of circles, triangles,
- complementary angles, and the
- Pythagorean Theorem.
-
-
- Trigonometry~
-
-
- Select this topic for drills involving
- the sine, cosine, and tangent of
- trigonometric equations. Right
- triangle equations are also covered.
-
- Note: A Trigonometric Table
- is located at the end of this
- document to assist you in doing
- trigonometric calculations.
-
-
- 5
-
-
- Selecting a Drill~
- -----------------
-
- Follow these steps to select a drill:
-
- 1. Select a topic from the Main Menu
- by pressing the number next to the
- topic you want to practice.
-
- A second menu appears, called the
- Drills Menu. This menu displays
- the list of drills for the topic
- you selected.
-
- 2. Select one of the drills on the
- Drills Menu by pressing the number
- next to the drill.
-
- 3. Press Enter to start the drill.
-
-
- Answering Questions~
- -------------------
-
- Questions are in two formats:
- multiple choice and short answer.
-
- Multiple choice questions provide four
- answers from which you can choose.
- The screen displays:
-
- Enter your answer (1-4): [ ]
-
- Type the number of the answer you think
- is correct.
-
- Then, press Enter to continue.
-
- Short answer questions do not provide
- a list of answers. You must enter the
- answer to each question. You might
- want to work out each question on
- paper. When you have an answer, type
- it after the prompt:
-
- Enter your answer: [ ]
-
- Then, press Enter to continue.
-
-
- 6
-
-
- If you answer a question
- correctly, the program tells you that
- your answer is correct.
-
- If your answer is incorrect, the

- To go to the next question, press
- Enter.
-
- You can answer as many questions as
- you like during a drill.
-
-
