  8. Machine Requirements:
  9.  
  10. MS-DOS compatible computer with: 
  11.  
  12.     -- 640k of RAM
  13.     -- CGA, EGA, or VGA graphics cards
  14.     -- 2 360k floppy drives and 
  15.         -- or --
  16.        1 360k floppy drive and 1 hard drive (Recommended)
  17.  
  18. Optional:
  19.  
  20.     -- a MicroSoft Mouse
  21.  
  22. IMPORTANT NOTE: You will need a hard drive in order to run 16 color
  23. versions of The Transinium Challenge.
  24.  
  25. There are three 360k floppies distributed with this version of The
  26. Transinium Challenge. They are labled Disk 1, Disk 2, and Disk 3.
  27.  
  28. To play the game using two 360k floppy drives:
  29.  
  30. Place Disk 1 in the A: drive and Disk 2 in the B: drive. At the DOS
  31. prompt, execute:
  32.  
  33.     A:         <ret>        ...to make the A: drive current
  34.     CD \     <ret>        ...to make the root directory current
  35.     TREK     <ret>        ...to load and play The Transinium
  36.                             Challenge
  37.  
  38. (NOTE: "<ret>" means press the "ENTER" or "RETURN" key on your
  39. keyboard.)
  40.  
  41. The Transinium Challenge will load, and you will be asked if you intend
  42. to use a mouse. Answer by entering "Y" or "N".
  43.  
  44. Next, the games imagery will be loaded into the computer's memory. When
  45. prompted, remove Disk 1 from the A: drive, then insert Disk 3 in the A:
  46. drive. The Transinium Challenge will begin a few seconds later.
  47.  
  48. Note that after you exit the game, you will be prompted to insert Disk 1
  49. in the A: drive with the message: "Insert disk with batch file." Remove
  50. Disk 3 from the A: drive and place Disk 3 in the A: drive, then press a
  51. key, and the game will end normally.

  53. To play the game using one 360k floppy drive and a hard drive:
  54.  
  55. Create a new directory on your hard drive by entering at the DOS prompt
  56. (for example):
  57.  
  58.     C:             <ret>        ...to make the C: drive current
  59.     CD \          <ret>        ...to make the root directory current
  60.     MakeDir TRANS    <ret>        ...to create a new directory
  61.     CD TRANS        <ret>        ...to make the new directory current
  62.  
  63. Then, place each of the three disks in your floppy drive in turn,
  64. entering each time at the DOS prompt:
  65.  
  66.     COPY A:*.*    <ret>        ...to copy all the files to the hard
  67.                                 drive
  68.  
  69. When you've finished copying all the files on the three disks, enter the
  70. following at the DOS prompt:
  71.  
  72.     TREK            <ret>        ...to load and play The Transinium
  73.                                 Challenge
  74.  
  75. The Transinium Challenge will load, and you will be asked if you intend
  76. to use a mouse. Answer by entering "Y" or "N". The Transinium Challenge
  77. will begin a few seconds later.

  79. Using the Keyboard vs. Using the Mouse 
  80.  
  81. You can use either the mouse or keyboard to play The Transinium
  82. Challenge. 
  83.  
  84. When using the keyboard, you will be able to highlight the various
  85. buttons, icons, and hotspots on the screen by using the arrow and
  86. alphabet keys. The left arrow and up arrow move the highlight towards
  87. the top left corner of the screen. The right arrow and down arrow move
  88. it toward the bottom right corner of the screen. Pressing the ENTER key
  89. selects the action indicated by the button, icon, or hotspot, and
  90. carries out your command.

  92. When using the mouse, you simply point at the button, icon, or hotspot
  93. which indicates the command you wish to be carried out, and click the
  94. LEFT mouse button.
  95.  
  96. To get to the special Save/Restore/Quit screen, first select the "Look
  97. Around" icon at the bottom left of the screen, then press Escape (if
  98. you're using keyboard control) or, if using the mouse, click the RIGHT
  99. mouse button.

  101. To indicate a file you wish to save or restore, select the textfield at
  102. the top left corner of the screen. 
  103.  
  104. If using the mouse, click on the space just to the right of the word
  105. File: This makes the textfield active, and you can enter your filename.
  106. Press ENTER to "lock in" the text, then click on OK or Cancel. 
  107.  
  108. If using the keyboard, you can activate the text field by using the
  109. arrow keys. Press ENTER to "lock in" the text, then select either "OK"
  110. or "Cancel." 
  111.  
  112. To restart The Transinium Challenge, go to the Save/Restore/Quit screen,
  113. select "Retrieve" and retrieve the saved game supplied on Disk 2 called
  114.  
  115.     NewGame
  116.  
  117. You will be transported to the bridge of the ENTERPRISE, at the
  118. beginning of your mission.
  119.

  121. Using the MakeEGA utility to create 16 color imagery.
  122.  
  123. In order to create a 16 color version of The Transinium Challenge, place
  124. all the files from the three disks into the the same directory in your
  125. hard drive, as described above. But instead of entering "TREK" at the
  126. DOS prompt, enter
  127.  
  128.     MakeEGA        <ret>        ...to begin the conversion process
  129.  
  130. You will be prompted through the process, which may take fifteen or more
  131. minutes to complete. It's worth the wait!
