- SCENARIO
- --------
-
- You have been chosen to be the last Champion to represent your world in the
- trial of the gods. Your task is to prove that the people in your world is
- fit to live by successfully completing the challenge put forth by the gods.
-
-
- STARTING
- --------
-
- * Run INSTALL.COM to setup the configurations before running DARKSPYR.COM *
-
- At the start of the game, you have the choice to either have the game
- generate a "quick" character for you, where all your character's attributes
- are pre-assigned, or you can create your own character. I recommend that you
- create your own character so that you can customize your attributes and
- determine what your character's strength and weaknesses.
-
-
- GAME PLAY
- ---------
-
- The game evolves around different mazes that you have to navigate your
- character through by solving puzzles and defeating creatures that are in
- them. You will find many objects along your quest that might help you or
- even harm you. Your objective is to go through each maze and find the exit
- portal (two small skulls with stars between them) on the walls, and advance
- to the next level.
-
-
- GAME CONTROLS
- -------------
-
- Movements : Mouse, joystick or keypad 1-9
- F8 : Score, level and status of Music & Sound effects
- F9 : Toggles Music & Sound effects
- F10 : Toggles Animation Color Change
- T : Take or pick-up objects next to your character
- P : Pause game
- R : Restore a saved game
- Alt-Q : Quit and exit to DOS
- Alt-A : Abort current game and start from scratch
- Alt-S : Save game
- '-' : Move Control Screen UP
- '+' : Move Control Screen DOWN
-
- This game is best played with a mouse as with most RPG games nowadays but you
- can also use your joystick to emulate the mouse if you don't have one.
-
-
- CONTROL SCREEN
- --------------
-
- The top half of the screen is the "Play Field" where your character actually
- walks around. On the bottom half is the Control Screen where you will see the
- picture of your character and the "action commands" to the right of that
- (PUNCH, THRUST, BLOCK, etc.) depending on what you have in your hands. This is
- just a partial view of the Control Screen. To view the entire Control Screen,
- move the cursor to the gray bar seperating the Play Field and the Control
- Screen, hold down the left mouse button and drag it up. You will see your
- inventory (empty boxes at the start of the game) and a few other stat screens.
- You can also use the '-' and '+' keys to move it up and down but it's much
- slower.
-
- Ok, now that you know how to access the entire Control Screen, here's what they
- mean. The two rows of boxes are your inventory holding cells. Each time you
- pick up an object, they'll end up in a box. When all the boxes have been
- filled, you can no longer pick up anymore objects even if your strength lets
- you carry more than you are at the moment.
-
- To ready an object, click on it, move it over to your character and click
- again. The picture should show that you're holding that item now. Note that
- it DOES matter which hand you hold your weapons in. So if you chose to be
- right-handed at the start of the game, make sure you ready your weapons in
- your right hand and shields on your left.
-
- Directly below the inventory boxes, you'll see your stats - Hit Points, Spell
- Points and Encumbrance. Watch these carefully. When they are white, it
- means everything is fine but when they turn red, you had better do something
- about it. If the Encumbrance turns red, it usually means you're carrying more
- weight around than you're capable of. Drop some stuff that's of no use to you
- immediately or you'll see your Agility and Endurance attributes start falling
- and your character will move (and fight) like a snail!
-
- There are 3 icon boxes on the lower left of the Control Screen. The first one
- tells you your character's attributes, the middle one (axe and sword) tells you
- how efficient you are with the different classes of weapons, and the last one
- (magic scroll) tells you your proficiency in the different classes of spells.
- You can also type 'A', 'W' and 'S' from the keyboard to display these.
-
- The lower right side of the Control Screen, you'll see the icons of a disk, a
- question mark '?' and an hour glass. These let you save the game, show the
- score (same as F8) and pause the game respectively.
-
-
- POTIONS/SCROLLS/RUNES/AMULETS
- -----------------------------
-
- Here are several potions that you will find throughout the game:
-
- Red : Cure poison (use this quickly when you're poisoned)
- Yellow : Heals wounds (give you back some hit points)
- Green : Poison (ready the potion in your hand and throw it as a weapon)
- Purple : ??? (never figured out what this one does)
- Blue : Water (doesn't seem to do anything either)
-
- At the start of the game, you should have entered the Mage's Room and picked
- up the spell book, a scroll and several potions. Move the scroll and any
- other scrolls that you might find throughout the game, into the spell book and
- you will be able to ready them at will.
-
- To prepare a spell for use, put the spell book in your hand and click on
