  11. We have tested the starter package with DESQview versions 2.25 
  12. and 2.26, The LAN starter kit consists of (2) 2mbps lan adapters 
  13. and a system disk. 
  14.  
  15. Installation was rather easy, and the instructions in the manual 
  16. are complete.  If you are installing this system on a 386 and are 
  17. using QEMM 4.23, you must exclude the Lan adapter ROM address
  18. space.  These are documented in the Lan Adapter user manual on 
  19. Pg. 6 (table 2).  Default is D800-DFFF.
  20.  
  21.      LANBIOS.EXE is the program that activates the network 
  22.      adapter in your PC.  It uses 1K and can be loaded high.
  23.  
  24.      REDIR.EXE is the networking software.  Each PC has to run 
  25.      this to be on the network.  It uses 11K and can be loaded 
  26.      high.

  28.      SERVER.EXE is an additional program that enables the PC
  29.      running it to be accessed as a file server rather than just 
  30.      as a workstation.  It takes about 22K and in most cases can 
  31.      also be loaded high.

  33. Lantastic uses DOS SHARE.EXE to provide basic file protection and 
  34. locking.  Non-network versions of software can be run by only one 
  35. user at a time.  
  36.  
  37. We find that with DESQview 2.25 you may want to try using an
  38. undocumented parameter, /DT.  This tells DESQview to inform DOS
  39. when DESQview closes files.  Generally, DESQview is able to run 
  40. many programs without using DOS, and for the sake of speed we 
  41. don't tell DOS when we close files.  Network software that 
  42. requires running SHARE.EXE may need /DT to keep things straight.  
  43. This may help if you are experiencing lock-ups running DESQview 
  44. on a Lantastic server.
  45.  
  46. I have been able to run DESQview 2.26 from the workstation as 
  47. well as from the server.  But as a rule, each workstation
  48. should run DESQview locally or run it from a unique directory on 
  49. the server.  
  50.  
  51. Since the servers in Lantastic are not dedicated, DESQview can
  52. be run on a PC designated as a server.  If you do this, you must
  53. login to the server as the workstations do, to minimize
  54. degradation of performance of the network as a whole.

  56. There are also two other programs, net and net_mgr, which can be
  57. run on a DOS command line or as a network menu program if no
  58. parameters are given to them.  This is the only part of Lantastic
  59. that could be run in a DESQview window, but is not recommended as
  60. it may cause lockups.

  62. The network drivers (lanbios.exe, redir.exe and server.exe) MUST 
  63. be run before invoking DESQview.
  64.  
  65. Also it has been noted that when running DESQview on the server and
  66. using the Lantastic print spooler, DESQview's "Manage Printer
  67. Contention" option should be set to [N].
