- ------------
-
- Once again, for the third year in a row, I failed completely to get a hotel
- room in the main convention hotel. Not a good way to start the weekend off!
-
- This is the second year running that the May convention has been held at the
- Grand Hotel, Birmingham and I think that the hotel is starting to show it's
- unsuitability for a May convention. The hotel simply can't cope with the
- large number of fans who usually attend and you'll always find that there
- will be a noticable number of fans who are turned away at the door, no matter
- how far they have travelled.
-
- To start off, the con promised four guests - convention regulars Richard
- Arnold and Guy Vardaman, Barrie Ingham (returning following the big
- impression he made at CONDUIT '91) and Wil Wheaton. However, once again, Wil
- Wheaton failed to turn up and again the weekend was filled with anti-Wil
- Wheaton jokes. His excuse? He had been offered a film role that began filming
- that very weekend!
-
- The guest that did arrive each gave only one scheduled talk, with Barrie
- Ingham talking about anything and everything, and Richard and Guy doing their
- usual trick of showing how much they actually know about the show. As a
- bonus, on the Monday, Richard and Guy gave a joint talk and slideshow and
- Barrie Ingham gave a performance of an abridged version of his one-man-show,
- "The Actor". Very entertaining, and one of the highlights of the con.
-
- The main highlight had to be the showing of Star Trek VI - the director's
- cut!!! this was brought to the con by Chas Evans of CIC Video, maybe hinting
- at the possibility of this being released later this year? There was only
- about 3 minutes of extra footage, but it was 3 minutes well worth watching!
-
- The rest of the video programme wasn't quite so satisfactory. On the Friday,
- the programme consisted almost entirely of Season 1/2 TNG episodes and early
- Classic Trek episodes. The only exception to this was the showing of
- Unification (both parts) and 2 other episodes from Season 5. Saturday wasn't
- much better with the videos concentrating on Seasons 2/3 of TNG including
- The Best Of Both Worlds which was being transmitted that same week on TV!
- The Classic Trek room again showed a mixed selection and then ended from
- 8:00 pm onwards with repeats of some of the Season 1/2 episodes from the day
- before!
-
- Sunday saw the start of the reasonable video programme. In all honest, most
- fans don't really bother watching the Classic episodes as they've got them on
- video at home, but TNG episodes always pull a crowd and that's what I'll
- concentrate on. The day consisted of mostly Season 4 with a handful of Season
- 5 throuwn in for good measure. It was shocking to think that it took the
- organisers THREE days before they really started to show Season 5 in any real
- quantity. Once again, the Classic Trek room was turned over into a repeat
- room at around 8:00 pm including a repeat of The Best Of Both Worlds!
-
- Monday was reserved mainly for video requests. Throughout the weekend, there
- WERE some Season 5 episodes being shown in the main hall, but that was
- usually in between the main programme items. Any fans who were attending SOL
- III with the intention of seeing TNG episodes went home disappointed.
-
- The con book that was included with the package was a 36 page A5 book,
- printed on a very high quality glossy paper. The cover art was a quite
- impressive illustration of Kirk, Spock and Picard by well-known UK comic
- artist, Lee Sullivan. The actual content was quite poor with a few adverts,
- information on the con including details about the programme and a small
- selection of good quality photos. The best part of the book was the mini-
- features on all of the guests with brief histories of their careers along
- side full page photos.
-
- Overall, SOL III just seemed like one big non-event with simply not enough
- going on to keep anyone's interest. The first two days had an abysmal video
- programme, and the remainder of the weekend wasn't much better. Each of the
- guests were only given one individual slot each all weekend and the guest of
- honour failed to arrive for the second year running!
-
- It wasn't a BAD convention, but there were times when there simply wasn't
- anything to do! On the Friday, I spent most of the day walking around
- Birmingham city centre, looking in all the shops, something that I do EVERY
- Saturday!! I just prefer my cons with a little more action.

- SILVERCON '91 - THE VIDEO
- ---------------------------
- reviewed by Simon Plumbe
- --------------------------
-
-
- Every year, their prices fall, and more and more fans seem to be buying and
- taking video cameras along with them to conventions. Each time, there are
- more and more fans filming the talks and general goings on.
-
- Silvercon '91 in Glasgow was no exception, and there was, as is becoming the
- "norm", an official video produced of the convention. What was it like? It it
- worth buying? Would it be better to use the tape to record all the animated
- episodes when they get repeated? I had a look at a copy of the video.
-
- Right from the beginning, I was impressed with the tape, which ran for a
- staggering 3 hours. For a fan video, this is quite lengthy and it must have
- taken the editor absolutely AGES to edit all the footage together from the
- weekend.
-
- The video followed the general theme of a "diary" of the convention,
- featuring short excerpts from most of the main programme items as they
- happened throughout the weekend. To start things off, the video featured the
- opening ceremony, in full, with the near-legendary appearance of John de
- Lancie in a kilt! All the guests (John de Lancie and his wife, Marnie
- Mosiman,, Richard Arnold and TNG extra Ken Steadman) were introduced on stage
- by the committee. The whole opening ceremony was covered with just one camera
- and I felt that a second camera would have added to the overall "look" to the
- tape, but I can tell you from experience that editing from two sources can be
- almost impossible to achieve using a couple of normal videos at home!
-
- After the opening ceremony, the tape featured a selection of highlights from
- some of the talks, although I felt that there was better material that could
- have been used. Still, there was enough of it!
-
- The rest of the tape followed in the same vein, with short clips of
- everything from the Saturday night party (which saw Marnie Mosiman giving a
- solo performance of a few songs) to the autograph sessions to a look around
- the art room. However, the choice of some of the clips seemed a little
- strange. Who wants to look around the dealers room or see a Steward's Party
- where nothing happened?
-
- Apart from these slight niggles, it's a great tape and although it will
- mainly appeal to fans who were at the con, anyone who didn't make it should
- invest a few pounds and buy a copy. It's worth the asking price just to see
- John de Lancie in THAT kilt!
-
- The video is available for £11.50 and it can be obtained from:
-
- Silvercon Video Offer
- PO Box 867
- Rutherglen
- Glasgow
- G73 4HR
- SCOTLAND
-
- The video is still available (even though it WAS released a year ago!), and
- cheques/POs should be made payable to "Contagion". All of the profits from
- the sale of the tape go to the Myasthenia Gravis Association.
