- WindowsBench version 1.0
-
- Release Notes
-
- The Workbench and Intuition environment for the Amiga is fascinating,
- but many people shun this brilliantly simple method of using their
- computer, despite the hard work that Apple, Commodore, AT&T (Unix),
- Digital Research (GEM) and Microsoft have put in to convince us that
- GUIs are the best thing since sliced Toasters.
-
- I have an interest in so-called 'super' workbench disks available
- inthe public domain, and although a very few are pretty good
- (WorkBench2.0Look for example, which I got from Senlac P.D.) most are
- only average or worse. I have little problem with the programs that
- they often contain, as there seems to be a reasonable concensus that
- the progs on this disk are more or less essential for Amiga
- people. The cosmetics of the disks are, however often (usually)
- dreadful, or compilers have shunned the Workbench in favour of
- front-end menu systems, avoiding the GUI altogether (this is often a
- problem with PD disks where, laudably, compilers have tried to cram as
- much as possible onto the disk). The recent DeskBench set of disks
- were especially disappointing.
-
- Having recently had the opportunity to 'play' with Microsoft Windows 3
- at work I have been struck that although the Amiga Workbench
- environment is mostly superior to Windows (partly due to better file
- requesters in the form of the ARP requesters widely used), the Windows
- set-up does have very useful facilities, and a very professional look
- to it. As I can't afford a high resolution monitor or an Amiga fitted
- out with AmigaDOS 2 I set about tarting up the Workbench for maximum
- viewing and using pleasure. After all, Windows has taken years to be
- accepted in the PC world, whereas we have been able to enjoy the
- pleasures and benefits of a GUI for ages!! When your friends and
- colleagues with Windows3 (and they will be ever so pleased with
- themselves for having it - the hype is appalling!) see this Workbench
- they will be amazed!
-
- In order to allow users to be selective about the doc files they read,
- I have split them up as follows:-
-
- ReadMe.doc This introduction document
- Windows.doc Something about Microsoft Windows
- Features.doc Special features of this disk
- Credits.doc Details of authors and utilities used
-
- There is an optional second disk to accompany WindowsBench - this
- includes virtually all the doc files relevant to all the programs
- featured on the main disk. If you do copy and spread WindowsBench
- 1.0, please copy both disks, as the full set of docs will help
- users, and will keep the authors happy.
-
- Thanks
-
- Thanks go out to the following, in the 'without whom all this would not
- have been possible' department:-
-
- Colin Mercer For introducing me to the Amiga in the first
- place!
-
- Karen & Jamie Mercer For putting up with Amiga-addicts such as
- Colin and myself!!!
-
- 'Mikon the Hakker' For teaching me about PCs and Amigas
-
- Commodore-Amiga For making the thing!
-
- AmigaNuts | For being brilliant PD/Shareware dealers
- Senlac | - excellent service, rapid delivery,
- Softville | great prices, etc etc.
- NBS | KEEP IT UP LADS!
- GoldStar |
-
- Microsoft Corp For taking so long to produce Windows, but
- for finally getting it right (-ish!)
-
-
- And Finally...
-
- Finally, there will inevitably be a number of bugs in the programs on
- the disk. Don't blame me! Bug reports should be sent to the authors
- listed in the Credits.doc file on disk 2. There is one clash of
- programs that is, for some reason bound to take you direct to the Guru
- - if you have SID open trying to also use SmartIcons will lead to
- disaster! DON'T DO IT!!! A pity, but you'll just have to exit SID
- before loading SmartIcons.
-
- I have put this disk together solely for the pleasure of producing a
- Workbench disk that is a professional looking product, that is as easy
- to use as possible and that bears as much of a resemblance to the
- Microsoft Windows environment as possible. I certainly do not want
- any monetary gain at all. I would ask that if you find the programs
- useful please, please, PLEASE send something to the authors -
- preferably some money, but at the very least an appreciative letter.
- Without the efforts of people like Timm Martin and Nico Francois (SID
- and PowerPacker respectively) the PD and Shareware scene would be a
- very dull place. Not all authors reply, and obviously some have moved
- so the addresses available are not correct, but a stamp isn't
- expensive after all! I suggest you write to the author first, and
- only send cash (or whatever) if you get a reply and confirmation of
- the address.
-
- So, I don't want cash, but I would welcome comments, queries,
- PD and Shareware programs from other Amiga nuts. Please write, or
- send disks to:-
