- "Sizzlers" is a interesting graphics program which produces a range
- of colourful geometrical patterns in a hi-res NTSC screen. It doesn't work
- with songs produced on previous versions of MED (i.e those using MEDPlayer
- versions 1.12 to 2.13) as the screen-mode slows such songs down to a quite
- unacceptable level - but, on v.3.00, everything is just fine.
-
- There are a few disadvantages to using this program, however. A few
- PAL-users, in particular, won't like the flickering, NTSC-sized screen. In
- response to such suggestions, I'd have to say that I find the screen more
- "cinematic" (for this purpose, anyhow), while the "hi-res" display is more
- effective for showing and mixing lines and colours than any standard-mode
- (320x200/240 pixels) screen could ever be. The "flickering" is unavoidable
- for most users (unless they have a flicker-fixer device or an Amiga 3000),
- though I might add that some "Sizzlers" pictures barely flicker at all.
-
- ---------------------------
-
- Although there are some instructions in the introductory-screen of
- the program, I'll mention the following as the "definitive guide" to its
- use on the present disk:
-
- - If you want to have a song playing-along with the "Sizzlers" program, it
- is better (and faster) to start the song first; go to the "Music" drawer
- to select (load) one, before engaging "Sizzlers";
-
- - To start the "Sizzlers" program: simply double-click its icon. The main
- intro-screen then presents itself - read it, then press the "OK" button
- in the lower right-hand corner of the screen;
-
- - A picture should start automatically: further pictures can be generated
- by pressing any of the Amiga function-keys "F1" to "F7" (different types
- of pictures will generate according);
-
- - Other keys on your computer will operate other "effects": the process of
- picture-drawing is paused (or continued) by pressing the Space bar, and
- a "Help-screen" is displayed after pressing the "Help" button;
-
- - Choose the type of picture-production which you like best. I personally
- prefer those generated by the "F5" and "F7" keys, but most will look OK
- after a few minutes;
-
- - Certain pictures will often be better than others: in terms of the use
- of colour, line-resolution or the amount of "flickering". If you don't
- like a particular picture, you can always start again;
-
- - It is possible to become quite adept at using "Sizzlers" - "experienced"
- users can tell after only a few seconds whether a picture will have any
- lasting interest or not;
-
- - Certain MED-songs go better with certain types of Sizzlers-screens - as
- a matter of personal opinion, I like "Bali" with "F1", "Real" with "F3"
- and "Synth" with "F5" (I'm rather open about all the rest);
-
- - Use your imagination to "see" things in the pictures: the illusions of
- depth and distance, images of real or imaginary objects, correspondence
- with the music currently playing, or just interesting blends of colour;
-
- - You don't have to watch a picture constantly; it can be switched behind
- the Workbench screen, with only occasional reference - to see how it is
- "developing";
-
- - To get back to Workbench without quitting the program, press the "left-
- Amiga" and "N" keys together - this combination and "left-Amiga plus M"
- are generally available to switch screens (without using to the gadgets
- in the top right-hand corner of the screen);
-
- - Once you have switched-screens, press the left mouse-button: this then
- "regains" or "loses" the pointer (as the case may be) and allows normal
- operation of the current -screen. A combination of the "Amiga+M/N" keys
- and the top right-hand corner screen-gadgets (plus left mouse-clicking)
- should be used in order to make the most use of this disk;
-
- - The easiest way to get from the Sizzlers-screen to Workbench, however,
- is to press the "Help" button - this pauses the drawing-process, shows
- the help screen and restores the pointer. Instead of clicking the "OK"
- button, you can click the (invisible) screen-gadget;
-
- - I occasionally found an on-screen "glitch" with Sizzlers: a rectangular
- "blob" that roams around the screen. This usually goes away quickly but
- it can be quite annoying at times. To prevent this from happening, wait
- till you've got a good picture going, then go to Workbench and retrieve
- the pointer: the "glitch" won't show if the pointer is in the Sizzlers-
- screen;
-
- - Retrieving the pointer (then hiding it in the bottom right-hand corner
- of the screen) is also the ideal way to demonstrate the "Sizzlers+MED-
- Song" package, as it stops any inquisitive people from messing-with or
- resetting the current picture or song (disconnect the mouse, too);
-
- - Disk-activity (e.g. loading songs) is much faster when "Sizzlers" isn't
- activated: simply pausing the "Sizzlers" screen doesn't improve things;
-
- - You can use commercial or Public Domain screen-saving programs with the
- "Sizzlers" program: it helps to pause the screen before you capture it,
- but the results may not be as attractive as you might expect;
-
- - To quit the program, press the Escape ("Esc") key.
-
- ---------------------------
-
- That's about all I've got to report at the moment. I'd appreciate it
- if any readers out-there can find (or program) any other graphics routines
- which are suitable for showing with MED-songs as well, as it would be nice
- to have a large collection of such utilities instead of the mere few I now
- possess.
-
- I'd also like to hear from any enterprising graphics-programmers who
- would like to work with me on future projects for either commercial or PD
- release - my address is in the "AVS-Info" document.
