  63.   The WD90C24/31 device driver provides seamless
  64.   support for accelerated display graphics and advanced
  65.   color resolutions when used with the minimum required
  66.   video memory.  It conforms to the OS/2 32-bit flat
  67.   memory model and is designed to function as a 32-bit
  68.   Presentation Manager* graphics display driver under
  69.   the OS/2 32-bit graphics engine.  This driver has
  70.   been enabled for use with the IBM* Display Console
  71.   Access Facility (DCAF) product.

  149.   This device driver is compatible with OS/2 2.1 and
  150.   higher.  Do not install it on previous versions of
  151.   OS/2.

  154.   PRELIMINARY STEPS
  155.   _________________

  157.   The following steps prepare your computer for the
  158.   WD90C24/31 graphics controller device driver:
  159.  
  160.   1.  You must have OS/2 DOS Support installed in order
  161.       to install this driver.
  162.   2.  The OS/2 ATTRIB command is used during
  163.       installation of the device driver.  If you
  164.       elected not to install the OS/2 Optional System
  165.  
  166.

  170.       Utilities or you have deleted the ATTRIB command,
  171.       use Selective Install and select Change File
  172.       Attributes to restore the ATTRIB command before
  173.       continuing.
  174.   3.  If you previously installed SVGA support, return
  175.       to VGA resolution using the procedures in
  176.       "Setting Your Display to VGA Mode" later in this
  177.       README before you install this driver.
  178.   4.  Be sure to copy the VESA program supplied with
  179.       your system or video adapter and update your
  180.       AUTOEXEC.BAT file to get support for high
  181.       resolution and high color modes.
  182.  
  183.   If in the future you want to change your display, you
  184.   must perform the steps listed above again to
  185.   configure the display profile.  Then you must issue
  186.   the SVGA ON command at a DOS command prompt to
  187.   recreate the SVGADATA.PMI file before you connect
  188.   your new display to the computer.

  194.   INSTALLATION FROM DISKETTE
  195.   __________________________
  196.  
  197.   To install the WD90C24/31 device driver from
  198.   diskette, do the following:
  199.  
  200.   1.  Insert the WD90C24/31 diskette into drive A (or
  201.       any other diskette drive).
  202.   2.  Open an OS/2 full-screen or OS/2 window session.
  203.   3.  At the OS/2 command prompt, type the following
  204.       command to copy all necessary files to the OS/2
  205.       drive:
  206.  
  207.              A:SETUP A: C:
  208.  
  209.       (where A: is the diskette drive, and C: is the
  210.       drive where OS/2 is installed.)
  211.  
  212.       Then press Enter.
  213.   4.  When prompted to do so, remove the diskette from
  214.       drive A, perform a shutdown, and then restart
  215.       your computer.
  216.   5.  Open the OS/2 System folder.
  217.   6.  Open the System Setup folder.
  218.   7.  Open the Display Driver Install object.
  219.  
  220.       When the Display Driver Install window appears,
  221.       "Western Digital 90C24 [IBM BBS]"or "Western Digital 90C31 [IBM BBS]"

  227.       should be the default choice.  If not, select it.
  228.       Then select OK.
  229.   8.  When the Monitor Configuration/Selection Utility
  230.       window appears, the "Install Using Defaults for
  231.       Monitor Type" choice is preselected.  You can
  232.       accept this choice or select "Install Using
  233.       Display Adapter Utility Program" to choose a
  234.       different refresh rate.  Then select OK.
  235.  
  236.       If you select the "Install Using Display Adapter
  237.       Utility Program" choice, you must have a DOS
  238.       monitor utility that came with your display
  239.       adapter.  Contact the display adapter
  240.       manufacturer's technical support for information
  241.       on how to use the monitor utility under OS/2.
  242.   9.  When the Source Directory pop-up window appears,
  243.       insert the WD90C24/31 diskette into drive A.
  244.       Then select Install.
  245.  
  246.       NOTE:  At this point, DSPINSTL determines the
  247.              hardware configuration by creating the
  248.              \OS2\SVGADATA.PMI file.  If the
  249.              \OS2\SVGADATA.PMI file has not been
  250.              created, the adapter will not be
  251.              supported.

  253.   10. When the installation is complete, do the
  254.       following:

  260.       a.  Open the OS/2 System folder.
  261.       b.  Open the System Setup folder.
  262.       c.  Open the System object.

  264.           When the Settings notebook appears, select
  265.           the Screen tab to see a list of all the
  266.           supported resolutions for your configuration.
  267.       d.  Select a resolution.  Then close the
  268.           notebook.
  269.       e.  Perform a shutdown and restart your computer.

  271.   Note that during the installation of this driver,
  272.   DISPLAY.LOG and DSPINSTL.LOG files are created in the
  273.   OS2\INSTALL directory.  These files identify the OS/2
  274.   system files that were updated and indicate whether
  275.   the installation was successful.  The contents of
  276.   these files might be useful if you need to report an
  277.   installation problem to IBM.

  288.   1.  The server must contain a directory named WD_DRVS
  289.       on the same drive where the OS/2 diskettes
  290.       reside.  The WD_DRVS directory must contain all
  291.       of the files from the WD90C24/31 device driver
  292.       diskette.
  293.   2.  OS/2 must have been successfully installed on the
  294.       client using the CID (Configuration Installation
  295.       Distribution) method.

  412.          /PK:SVGA where SVGA is the primary adapter key.
  413.          /SK:NONE where NONE is the secondary adapter key.

  415.          /T:C: where C: is the drive where OS/2 is installed.
  416.          /MC:4 is the manufacturing code that distinguishes Western Digital.
  417.          /res:640x480x256 is a resolution/color depth from the
  418.           list of "Supported Resolutions" that appears earlier in
  419.           this README.

  421.   NOTES:
  422.  
  423.   1.  Be sure you have the stated video memory
  424.       required, as listed in "Supported Resolutions"
  425.       earlier in this README.  A safe choice is
  426.       640x480x256.  Any of the listed resolutions can
  427.       be selected, but your display might be damaged if
  428.       you select a resolution that your display does
  429.       not support.

  435.   2.  After the WD90C24/31 device driver has been
  436.       successfully installed on the client machine
  437.       using the CID method and the client machine is
  438.       restarted, the resolution will be as specified by
  439.       command line argument.
  440.  
  441.  
  442.   FUNCTIONAL RESTRICTIONS
  443.   _______________________
  444.  
  445.   o   The WD90C24/31 driver does not support 16 million
  446.       color mode.
  447.   o   To avoid a general protection fault while loading
  448.       Ventura Publisher** for Windows**, be sure it is
  449.       in one of the 256 color resolutions.
  450.   o   WordPerfect** Versions 5.1 and 5.2 for Windows
  451.       produce a general protection fault when the
  452.       "Print Preview" option is selected while using
  453.       800x600x64K color mode.
  454.   o   Users of the software motion video feature of
  455.       MMPM/2* should expect satisfactory results in
  456.       256-color modes.  However, in 64K-color modes,
  457.       users of the feature will experience unusual
  458.       results.  An OS/2 pervasive fix package will be
  459.       available electronically.
  460.   o   Display Console Access Facility (DCAF) is
  461.       supported in 256-color modes only.

  467.   o   CorelDRAW** 2.0 will not run in a WIN-OS/2*
  468.       window session.  It must be run in a WIN-OS/2
  469.       full-screen session.
  470.   o   Micrografx** Charisma 2.1 will not run in a
  471.       WIN-OS/2 window session.  It must be run in a
  472.       WIN-OS/2 full-screen session.
  473.  
  474.  
  475.   FUNCTIONAL RESTRICTIONS FOR LAPTOP COMPUTERS
  476.  
  477.   o   To change refresh rates on the ThinkPad, edit the
  478.       file called IBMVESA\FRATE.DAT.  See
  479.       IBMVESA\TPADVESA.DOC for instructions on how to
  480.       edit this file.
  481.   o   On laptop computers with Super-Twisted Nematode
  482.       (STN) display, even though 1MB video memory is
  483.       shipped with the system, only 0.5MB is
  484.       addressable by the software.  The other 0.5MB is
  485.       used internally by the controller.  This will,
  486.       therefore, restrict the number of supported
  487.       resolutions.  Most laptops with STN panels have
  488.       model numbers ending with "S."
  489.   o   Many laptops have a built-in internal display
  490.       capable of only a 640x480 resolution when used
  491.       during transportation or at remote sites.
  492.       However, when connected to an external display at
  493.       the office, these systems are capable of 800x600
  494.       and 1024x768 resolutions.

  500.       To avoid the need to select the lower resolution
  501.       prior to leaving the office, the OS/2 device
  502.       driver for the WDC24 automatically detects when
  503.       the internal display is ON and sets the lower
  504.       resolution (even though a higher resolution is
  505.       shown as selected on the Screen page of the
  506.       System Settings notebook).  However, because the
  507.       Windows display drivers cannot automatically
  508.       detect that the internal display is ON, you must
  509.       open the System object, select the Screen page,
  510.       change to a lower resolution, and then shut down
  511.       and restart your system if you want to use a
  512.       WIN-OS/2 window or full-screen session.  (If you
  513.       do not need to use a WIN-OS/2 session, you do not
  514.       need to make the change to the resolution in the
  515.       Settings notebook.  When the laptop is
  516.       reconnected to an external display, the
  517.       originally chosen resolution will be used again.)
  518.  
  519.       When using your laptop away from the office, the
  520.       System Settings notebook will most likely show
  521.       resolutions which are not possible to use on the
  522.       internal display.  On some laptops, all
  523.       resolutions appear in the System Settings
  524.       notebook, regardless of which displays were on
  525.       when the OS/2 display driver was installed.  On
  526.       most laptops, the higher resolutions appear in
  527.       the System Settings notebook only if the OS/2
  528.

  533.       display driver was installed while the internal
  534.       display was OFF.  To add higher resolutions to
  535.       the System Settings notebook, do the following:
  536.       1.  Shut down and restart your computer with the
  537.           internal display OFF.
  538.       2.  Open an OS/2 or DOS full screen.
  539.       3.  Type the following and press Enter:
  540.  
  541.                  SVGA ON
  542.  
  543.       4.  Open the Settings notebook for the System
  544.           object and select a higher resolution from
  545.           the Screen page.
  546.       5.  Shut down and restart your computer.
  547.   o   An external display attached to your system can
  548.       use resolutions above 640x480 while an internal
  549.       display cannot.  Whenever you switch to an
  550.       internal display, you should change the
  551.       resolution to 640x480x256.  To change the
  552.       resolution, do the following:
  553.       1.  Open OS/2 System.
  554.       2.  Open System Setup.
  555.       3.  Open System.
  556.       4.  On the Screen page of the notebook, select
  557.           640x480x256.
  558.       5.  Close the notebook.
  559.       6.  Shut down and restart your computer.

  565.       NOTE:  If you do not follow the above steps, the
  566.              Desktop will automatically switch to the
  567.              640x480x256 resolution because the
  568.              internal display cannot handle the higher
  569.              resolutions.  However, Windows
  570.              applications running in a WIN-OS/2 window
  571.              or full-screen session will have problems
  572.              because the WIN-OS/2 session settings
  573.              cannot automatically update from a higher
  574.              resolution to the 640x480x256 resolution.
  575.              The OS/2 Desktop will be functional enough
  576.              to correct this situation by using the
  577.              above steps.  These steps can be done
  578.              using either the internal or external
  579.              display.
  580.  
  581.   o   Due to a hardware restriction, MODE 132 will not
  582.       work on the internal display.
  583.   o   MODE 40 on an external display will utilize only
  584.       half of the screen.
  585.   o   If your system comes up with a black screen,
  586.       toggle the Fn+F5 keys to correct the problem.  If
  587.       you have an external keyboard attached to your
  588.       system, refer to the documentation that came with
  589.       your computer for information about the internal
  590.       or external display function key.
  591.   o   If you are using an external display, you might
  592.       occasionally encounter a band (usually black)
  593.  
  594.

  598.       across the screen when you start the system.  To
  599.       correct this problem, do the following:
  600.       1.  Perform a shutdown of your system.
  601.       2.  Turn your computer off and then on again.
  602.

  604.   SETTING YOUR DISPLAY TO VGA MODE
  605.   ________________________________
  606.  
  607.   Use the following procedures to return to VGA mode.
  608.  
  609.   NOTE:  If your display is out of sync, start OS/2
  610.          using the OS/2 Installation Diskette, insert
  611.          Diskette 1 when prompted, then press F3 to
  612.          display a command prompt.  Use the following
  613.          instructions to reset your display mode:
  614.  
  615.   o   If you are installing this driver on OS/2 Warp,
  616.       returning to VGA mode has been simplified.  Do
  617.       the following:
  618.  
  619.       1.  Turn on your computer.  If your computer is
  620.           already on, press Ctrl+Alt+Del to restart it.
  621.       2.  When a small white box appears in the upper
  622.           left-hand corner of your screen, press
  623.           Alt+F1.
  624.       3.  When the Recovery Choices screen appears,
  625.           press V.

  631.       Your display adapter is restored and can work in
  632.       VGA mode.  If you want to install a new display
  633.       adapter or video device driver, refer to Chapter
  634.       16, "Video Procedures," in the User's Guide to
  635.       OS/2 Warp.

  637.   o   If you are installing this driver on OS/2 2.1,
  638.       2.11, or OS/2 for Windows, and you installed from
  639.       diskettes, do the following:
  640.  
  641.       1.  Be sure RSPDSPI.EXE is in the \OS2\INSTALL
  642.           directory.  If it is, go to step 2.  If it is
  643.           not, insert Diskette 8 into drive A and
  644.           unpack RSPDSPI.EXE with the following
  645.           command:
  646.  
  647.                C:\OS2\UNPACK A:\INSTAID C: /N:RSPDSPI.EXE
  648.  
  649.           (where A: is the drive containing Diskette 8,
  650.           and C: is the drive where OS/2 is installed.)
  651.       2.  Type C: and then press Enter.
