- What this package contains:
- ===========================
-
- This package contains new video device drivers for use with
- Windows 3.1 (tm) & some DOS application programs, such as
- WordPerfect (tm) & AutoCAD (tm). These device drivers are
- specifically designed to maximize performance & function of
- these applications on the ThinkPad 350/350C & PS/Note 425/425C
- systems.
-
- This is version 2.5.1 of the device driver package, which
- contains problem fixes & performance enhancements. Windows
- users who install the driver recommended below (640x480 256
- colors, linear version) will see significant performance
- & appearance improvements over the default VGA driver.
-
- This package contains images for 2 separate diskettes.
- The following instructions will guide you through creating
- the diskettes & installing the software.
-
- You will need two 3.5" diskettes, formatted for 1.44 Meg.
-
-
- Creating the diskettes:
- =======================
-
- 1. Copy the AFVIDEO* EXE files to your hard disk as AFVIDEO1.EXE and
- AFVIDEO2.EXE.
-
- 2. Format one or two 2MB diskettes to 1.44MB.
-
- 3. Self-extracting diskette images:
-
- Example:
-
- (with diskette in drive)
-
- c:\AFVIDEO1 (will create diskette #1)
- c:\AFVIDEO2 (will create diskette #2)
-
- Label the diskettes as follows:
-
- AFVIDEO1.EXE ==> ThinkPad 350, PS/Note 425 Video Drivers
- for DOS & Windows 3.1 (tm)
- Diskette 1 of 2
- Version 2.5.1
-
- 1993 (C) Copyright Chips and Technologies, Inc.
-
-
-
-
- AFVIDEO2.EXE ==> ThinkPad 350, PS/Note 425 Video Drivers
- for DOS & Windows 3.1 (tm)
- Diskette 2 of 2
- Version 2.5.1
-
- 1993 (C) Copyright Chips and Technologies, Inc.

-
- Installing the software:
- ========================
-
- The following procedure describes the Windows 3.1 (tm)
- installation procedure (the procedure is similar for other
- programs). There are 2 steps:
-
- 1. Copy the new video drivers to your fixed disk
-
- (an installation program is provided for this purpose)
-
- 2. Tell Windows to use the new driver you prefer
-
- (you will use a program provided with Windows to do this)
-
- This procedure assumes that you have installed Windows using
- the default directory names. If this is not the case, you
- may need to override the subdirectory prompts when they are
- presented by the installation program.
-
- Copying new display drivers to your fixed disk:
- -----------------------------------------------
-
- 1. Insert the AFVIDEO1 diskette into your system
-
- 2. Switch DOS prompt to A: drive - this **MUST**
- be native DOS, not a DOS session opened from Windows !!!
-
- 3. Enter & execute "setup" (executing setup from A: disk)
-
- 4. Follow menu directions, with 2 important notes:
-
- - select "Windows" drivers, "all resolutions"
- - again, assuming Windows was installed with std dir names,
- accept default destination for drivers
-
- 5. Escape when complete
-
- Tell Windows to use the new drivers:
- ------------------------------------
-
- 1. Switch back to C: drive
-
- (assuming standard Windows directory names) change to
- C:\WINDOWS subdirectory if necessary
-
- 2. Enter & execute "setup" (executing setup from C:\WINDOWS)
-
- After a few moments, a menu will be displayed with your
- system current configuration
-
- 3. Cursor up to "Display" & hit enter
-
- 4. Select "* CHIPS 655XX Linear 640x480x256" driver from list
- & hit enter (note: there will be other 640x480x256 drivers,
- so be certain to pick the "Linear" variety)
-
- 5. You should now be back at the system configuration screen,
- with the highlight on "Accept the configuration shown above".
- Press enter.
-
- 6. Another screen will display showing details of the driver
- which is about to be installed (name, size, version, date).
- Press enter again & allow the install to complete.
-
- At this point you should be back to the DOS prompt. You may
- start Windows, will use the new driver. If you've chosen the
- driver recommended above, you will see a message after the Windows
- logo is displayed, & before the Windows desktop appears:
-
- "Welcome to the CHIPS linear 8BPP driver 2.51"
-
- NOTE: if you use a virus protection program, you may get a
- warning message when you start Windows, since WIN.COM has been
- changed. Most virus protection software will allow you to
- OK an update to the record for this file.
-
-
- Known Problems:
- ===============
-
- 1. Starting Windows when the display device is set to "CRT"
- (see Configuration Utility, Fn+F1):
-
- Windows logo will display OK, CHIPS driver signon will display
- OK, then desktop will not display properly (loss of sync).
- This problem only occurs when display device is set to "CRT".
- "LCD" & "LCD and CRT" function properly.
-
- WORKAROUND: Press Fn+F1 to enter Configuration Utility, then
- Esc to exit. Display will be re-synchronized.
-
- ALTERNATE: Use "LCD and CRT" display device setting when
- CRT use is required.
-
-
- 2. Entering Configuration Utility from DOS session under Windows
- when display device is set to "CRT":
-
- Screen sync is lost when returning from Configuration Utility.
- This problem only occurs from a DOS session under Windows
- (does not affect native DOS) when the display device is set
- to "CRT". "LCD" & "LCD and CRT" will function properly.
-
- WORKAROUND: Issue a "mode co80" command to re-synchronize
- the display.
-
- ALTERNATE: Use "LCD and CRT" display device setting when
- CRT use is required.
