  6. What This Diskette Does
  7. -----------------------
  8.  
  9. The System Program Service Diskette given here can update the system
  10. program stored in the ThinkPad system to fix problems, add new functions,
  11. or expand functions. The supported models are as follows.
  12.  
  13.    - ThinkPad 760E, 760ED, which support XGA (1024 x 768) panel displays.
  14.  
  15. *  IMPORTANT NOTICE for 760E/760ED system users;
  16.             If you display is an SVGA (800 x 600), this diskette does
  17.             NOT support your BIOS.  Please update your BIOS with the
  18.             "IBM ThinkPad 760E/760ED/760EL/760ELD System Program Service
  19.             Diskette".

  44.  - (Fix) A small amount (8KB) of data could be overwritten and lost
  45.          under the following circumstances:
  46.  
  47.          - Hibernation is Enabled.
  48.          - There is data present on the last cylinder of the Hard
  49.            Disk Drive.
  50.          - The ThinkPad actually enters Hibernation mode by pressing
  51.            Fn-F12 or by customized power management options.
  52.  
  53.         NOTE:  - The problem does not occur when creating the Hibernation
  54.                  file.
  55.                - It only occurs when the ThinkPad actually enters
  56.                  Hibernation mode.
  57.                - Only 2.1GB Hard Disk has this problem.  There is no
  58.                  problem with other hard disks currently available from
  59.                  IBM.

  62.  - (Fix) System intermittently hangs especially under communication
  63.          environments.
  64.

  66. Updating System Program
  67. -----------------------
  68.  
  69. Notes: - You need an AC adapter and a charged battery pack to update
  70.          the system program.
  71.  
  72.        - If your computer is attached to any kinds of Docking station
  73.          or port replicator, turn off the computer and detach it before
  74.          proceeding.
  75.  
  76. 1.  Print these instructions or display on another computer.
  77. 2.  Firmly connect the AC adapter to the computer.
  78. 3.  Insert the System Program Service Diskette into the diskette drive
  79.     and turn on the computer.
  80. 4.  Select "Read this first..." from the menu and carefully read the
  81.     information that appears.
  82. 5.  Press the Esc key to return to the menu.
  83. 6.  Select "Update system program" and follow the instruction on
  84.     the screen.
  85.  
  86.     Warning: Do not turn off or suspend the computer until the update
  87.              has been completed. IF YOU TURN OFF OR SUSPEND THE
  88.              COMPUTER WHILE THE UPDATE IS STILL IN PROGRESS, THE SYSTEM
  89.              BOARD MAY HAVE TO BE REPLACED.
  90.  
  91. After the update has been completed, do the following to make the
  92. changes effective.
  93.  
  94. 7.  Make sure the System Program Service Diskette is removed from
  95.     the diskette drive, then turn off the computer.
  96. 8.  Press and hold the F1 key, then turn on the computer. Hold the F1 key
  97.     until the Easy-Setup menu appears.
  98. 9.  If a password prompt appears, type the correct password.
  99. 10. Select Config, then select Initialize.
  100. 11. Select OK to initialize the system.

  102. Run the diagnostics to make sure that the computer runs with no errors:
  103.  
  104. 12. Turn off the computer, press and hold the F1 key, then turn on
  105.     the computer. Hold the F1 key until the Easy-Setup menu appears.
  106. 13. Select Test, then select Start to run all the basic tests.
  107.     Various test patterns will appear on the screen.
  108.     An OK will appear for each device that passes the test.
  109. 14. Verify that OK appears for all of the devices tested.
  110. 15. Press the Esc key to exit Test and turn off the computer.

  116. Each version of the System Program Service Diskette contains the following
  117. system program (BIOS). The BIOS P/N and the date can be viewed by invoking
  118. Easy-Setup and selecting Config followed by System Board.
