  2. This readme document is ONLY for the IBM Thinkpad 
  3. SELECT-A-SYSTEM dos/windows and OS2 warp preload.  If the
  4. user has installed Warp from a shrink wrapped copy then
  5. the following process will not work.
  6.  
  7. IF YOU DO NOT HAVE THE INSTALL DISKS, YOU CAN USE THE WARP UTILITY DISKS
  8. THAT ARE AVAILABLE ON THE IBM BBS.

  11. Backing up an Restoring The Desktop
  12. This procedure requires 2 seperate diskettes. A blank one to create your own
  13. backup, and the diskette you downloaded from the IBM BBS.
  14.  
  15. It is always a good idea to make frequent backups of your desktop.  The
  16. folowing procedure explains how to make a backup and use it to restore
  17. desktop if something happens to it.  There is a related procedure called
  18. archiving which may also be used to recover a customized desktop, but
  19. it is still a good idea to have a backup on diskette.
  20.  
  21. You will need your OS/2 Utility disks created from the System Setup
  22. folder, as well as a blank diskette,
  23. and you will also need to know the actual name
  24. of the directory, where OS/2 keeps its Desktop information.  It is
  25. generally named DESKTOP, but you may need to verify this before
  26. beginning the procedure
  27. o  Open an OS/2 Window either by clicking on the OS/2 window object
  28.    on the Launchpad, or by double-clicking Command Prompts,
  29.    then double-clicking the OS/2 Window object.
  30. o  At the C:\ prompt, type the following, then press ENTER:
  31.    DIR /AD /P
  32. o  This will show you a list of directories and files. Look for a
  33.    directory named DESKTOP or something like that, i.e, DESKTOP1,
  34.    DESKTOP2, or OS!2_DESK, etc.  Write down the name of this
  35.    directory.  (If it is different than DESKTOP, you will need to
  36.    substitute that name for DESKTOP in the examples below)

  38. Backing up
  39.  
  40. 1. Restart your system with the OS/2 Utility disk 1 in the A: drive.
  41. 2. When asked, insert  Utility disk 2, and press enter
  42. 3. The Utility disks will exit the boot process and give an A: propmt
  43. 4. Insert Utility disk 3
  44. 5. Backup your DESKTOP directory and subdirectories to the blank diskette
  45.    by typing the following command at the c:\ or a:\ prompt
  46.  
  47.                     backup c:\desktop a: /s
  48.  
  49.    where C: is the drive where OS/2 resides and A: is where your disk is.
  50.  
  51. 6. The system will read the Utility disk and prompt you to insert the backup
  52.    diskette into the A: drive
  53. 7. Next, copy the OS2.INI and OS2SYS.INI files from the OS2 directory
  54.    to your diskette, by typing the following command, then pressing enter.

  56.              COPY C:\OS2\OS2*.INI A:
  57.  
  58. 8. Next, copy your current config.sys to the diskette , by typing the
  59.    folowing command and then pressing ENTER.

  61.              COPY C:\CONFIG.SYS A:\
  62.  
  63. 9. Label this disk appropiately and put it away in a safe place.

  66. Restoring your Desktop
  67.  
  68. For this procedure, you will once again need your Utility disks,
  69. plus your disk with backup of your desktop.  The diskette used will
  70. be the diskette you downloaded from the IBM BBS.

  72. 1. Restart your computer with your OS/2 utility disk 1in the A: drive
  73. 2. When prompted, insert  utility 2 and press ENTER.
  74. 3. When the boot process stops at an  A: prompt,
  75. 4. Insert the diskette used to create your desktop backup.
  76. 6. Copy the OS2.INI and OS2SYS.INI from the diskette to the \OS2
  77.    subdirectory on your hard drive, by typing the following command
  78.    at the C:\ prompt, then pressing enter.

  80.           COPY A:\OS2*.INI C:\OS2
  81.  
  82. 7. Copy the config.sys from your backup diskette to the C: drive, by
  83.    typing the following command and pressing enter.
  84.  
  85.           COPY A:\CONFIG.SYS C:\
  86.  
  87. 8. Restore the desktop directory and subdirectories from your backup
  88.    diskette to the computer.
  89. 9. Insert the utility disk 3 and type the following command at the A: prompt
  90.  
  91.      RESTORE A: C: /S
  92.  
  93. 10.The system will prompt the user to insert the backp diskette.
  94. 11.You should now be able to remove your diskette and restart your computer.

  96. THE WARP UTILITIY DISKETTES ARE AVAILABLE ON THE IBM PC COMPANY BBS
  97. IN THE PC300 AND PC700 SECTION.  THE NAMES FOR THE FILES ARE 
  98. WARPUT01.DSK, WARPUT02.DSK AND WARPUT03.DSK.  YOU WILL ALSO NEED
  99. LDF.COM FROM THE BBS TO UNCOMPRESS THE FILES.
