- Break In! - An "Act of War" mission by Alex Wingrove
- ---------
-
- The year is 2031. Corporations run the world. When corporations want
- something done that is against their popular image, they call in the punks,
- out-casts and hired guns of the Sprawls, giants cities that span
- continents.
- When The Hiri-osha Labs want some information held by a rival corporation
- destroyed, they called in you and a gang of gun-hands, mis-fits and street
- brawlers. Along with Battle Droids from Hiri-osha Labs armed forces, you
- are commissioned to go into the Entocomp corporation building and locate
- and destroy the five computers holding the information.
- You are in command of the operation. From a remote location, you use a
- computer simulation of the combat to direct the forces at your disposal. If
- you succeed, rich rewards beckon. If you fail, your life expectancy will be
- reduced to about 1 minute.
- The computer uses symbols to show the units, both yours and the enemies.
- Your side has is designated by an 'A' for attacker. Enemy forces are 'E'.
- Your gang members are represented by triangles and Battle Droids as
- hexagons. The computer files are stored in computer towers that
- self-destruct when shot. They are shown as a square with a '!' on.
- The enemy are classed in five grades of threat. Circles are the lowest
- droids. Triangles are the best patrol droids. Human gaurds are squares,
- Battledroids are hexagons and the highest threat droids are octagons. The
- Octagons are a new form of Battle Droid, called a Megadroid, that has been
- developed by Entocomp. Not only is it more powerful than standard, but it
- is also impervious to all forms of projectile attack. This means that
- Lasers must be used to destroy these droids. Explosions have also been
- found to cause some damage, but these droids will easily survive a direct
- grenade strike, certainly long enough to fire back.
- These symbols provide a quick indication of the approximate threat level
- of each unit. Hopefully this will give you an edge over the opposition or
- you could find your career cut short very quickly.
-
- Playing the mission:
- All weapons are available to each side, so this will not cause any
- problems.
-
- Designers Notes:
- I really wanted to do a mission that had a very different view on the
- game. The Laser Squad-style approach used by Neil Yates in his missions on
- 17-Bit disk no.3201 were effective, but not quite what I wanted. I
- eventually got the inspiration from this from Sabre Team, which uses a
- similar style view in its shooting section. The Cyberpunk theme came from
- the very excellent books by William Gibson and from role-playing games such
- as Shadowrun.
- If I remember correctly, Interphase also featured a map section similar to
- this and that contributed to the idea of geometric shaped symbols for the
- unit.
- I intend to do a whole series of missions using this style and setting.
- Other, more conventional styles will also probably be used as well, but
- that depends on whether I can draw suitably dark and run-down looking
- graphics. This style still is not exactly the sort of look I was trying for
- so I'll keep trying.
