- This is just a short piece of text to tell you something about the game.
-
- Antwars was programmed on a single drive 1 MB A500 for most of its early
- development and was finished on my brand new A1200 . It has taken me almost
- 10 months to program the whole lot . With a decent sized harddrive
- ( or one at all for that matter ) I reckon that figure could easily have
- been cut in half . Oh Well .
-
- It was programmed in Amos . Amos programmes usually get knocked for being
- very Amos-ish , using the same requestors , mouse pointers , etc. of Amos
- itself so I invested some time in customising it a bit .
-
- The songs that I sampled were ( in order of appearance ) :
-
- Blood - Faith no More
- The crab Song - Faith no More
- Seek and Destroy - Metallica
- The Four Horsemen - Metallica
- One - Metallica
- Eye of the beholder - Metallica
-
- "Wake up , Time to Die !" was sampled from BabyTeeth by Therapy , who in
- turn sampled it from the film "BladeRunner".
-
- The rest of the sampled speech is me being played at a higher frequency than
- usual ( In case you thought I was a squeaky little poof ).
-
- The Programmes used to create Ant Wars were :
-
- Amos / Amos 3d - Programme Code
- DPaint III / DPaint IV AGA - Graphics
- Stereo Master / Octamed - Sounds
- Vista / Imagine 2 - The groovy looking ad at the end of the game
- and good old WorkBench - Jamming the whole lot together
-
- Inspiration came from loads of different places :
-
- Lemmings provided the initial inspiration . I imagined these gits armed to
- the teeth blasting the daylights out of each other would make a very good
- game . So did a certain Stephen Kenny . When I came up with the idea he said
- "It`s a great idea , but you`ll never be able to do it ."
- So I`ve spent these last ten months slaving away , sacrificing my eye sight
- mainly out of spite . So now , I think I deserve a fairly large
- " HA ! Told you so ! "
-
- "For Whom the Bell Tolls" by Metallica was another source . Major groovy good
- tune that .
-
- If you`ve ever read Terry Pratchet`s " Equal Rites " you might remember the
- bit at the end with the mutant ants building this wierd pyramid and
- inscribing the secret of longevity on a wall . That was bloody hilarious and
- gave me the initial idea of using ants .
-
- The Trials of Life by David Attenborough has got to be the best programme
- boadcasted ever . It is just so cool . I remember this one on Jellyfish
- which swim around in the tropics , The Lions Mane or something like that
- they were called . Some measured up to 100 metres long ! Excellent !
- Did you know that the "Sting" of a jellyfish is actually loads of
- miscroscopic poison "harpoons" which tear into flesh ? Cool !
- Anyway , as cool as they are , JellyFish can`t hold bazookas ( no bone
- structure you see ) so I had to pick another really vicious form of life..
-
- Ants ! These chaps are brilliant . There`s this species of ant , The Army
- Ant , which has a caste of Warriors with mandibles ( jaws ) half the size of
- the rest of their body ! Psycopathic or what ? What made having ants as the
- main characters in my game really suitable though was the fact that , in
- real life , ants actually do fight battles against one another . Battles
- between different species such as Red ants and Black ants happen all the
- time . And tbese guys are ferocious fighters . Battles can last for hours ,
- days even , without stopping , with not a single ant giving up until it`s
- either dead or victorious .
-
- Enough education . Ever seen "Them!" ? It`s a black and white sci-fi horror
- featuring 15 foot high , yes you guessed it , Ants ! The acting is atrocious
- but the plot and special effects were handled all right . See it .
-
- I can`t remember if it was Elmer Fudd or Daffy Duck , but one of those
- cartoony types was in this cartoon I saw when I was about 9 or so .
- It was called something along the lines of "Army Ants" , and depicted the
- struggle between Elmer ( or whoever it was ) trying to eat a picnic , and
- this nest of ants trying to steal it . The best bit was when Elmer started
- throwing firecrackers and things at the nest , and the ants retaliated with
- this awesome arsenal of Tanks , Planes , Infantry and Bombs , and pretty
- much wiped him out . It was great !
-
-
- Ant Wars II has a load more features than this version and it`s the one I`m
- happier with . Personally I think this game is more strategy than arcade ,
- you`re forced to think how many moves you can afford to spend doing
- something and is closer to Chess rather than A Blast-Em-Up . Some people
- prefer it this way . At least it`s not another bloody platformer !
- Ant Wars II however is a much faster game and depends more on good reflexes
- than on a good brain , although there are strategy elements . The reason for
- the difference in speed is the fact that both players play simultaneously on
- 2 seperate screens . This allows for excellent dog-fights between 2
- aeroplanes , or really crazy tank battles , etc .
-
- Please ! Subscribe for the second version if you can ! I really do need the
- money pretty badly . Also , if I get some cash out of this , my parents
- might look a little bit more favourably on me skipping off study to tap away
- at my amiga .
-
- Anyway , enjoy the game , if you`re a programmer or anything , you might
- like to look at the code . There are some nice bits , like trajectories and
- map making stuff . If you find you can`t follow what I`m doing at some point
- in the code don`t be surprised , it usually took me hours to understand what
- I was doing myself when I was debugging it . I`ve made a fully labelled
- explained source code disk if you wish to understand better some part .
- Details are in the instructions on how to obtain this disk .
-
- Have Fun ! ,
