  94. The following hardware is required to install and use the Virtual
  95. Tablet Interface drivers, utilities and programs:

  97.   *  Any Summagraphics, CalComp, Kurta, GTCO, Wacom, Numonics, Houston
  98.      Instruments, Kontron, Science Accessories, AceCad, Hitachi or
  99.      compatible digitizer.
  100.  
  101.   *  A 80386 microprocessor or higher.
  102.   
  103.   *  A VGA display system or higher.
  104.  
  105.   *  MS or PC DOS 5.0 or higher.
  106.  
  107.   *  Microsoft Windows 3.1 or higher.

  110.            GETTING HELP AND PRODUCT SUPPORT

  113. If you need technical assistance, you may send electronic mail to

  115. include your registration number and a full description of the
  116. problem or request that will be responded to within one working day
  117. (sometimes one hour!). This is the fastest and preferred method of

  131.          INSTALLING FROM WINDOWS OR MS/PC DOS
  132.          ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

  134. To run the SETUP.EXE utility from within DOS, enter the command line
  135. below at the DOS prompt:
  136.  
  137.             WIN [drive:] SETUP.EXE

  139. Or, if you are already running Windows, enter the command line below
  140. in response to the Run command from the Program Manager:

  145.           COPYING FILES FROM THE INSTALLATION DISKS
  146.           ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

  148. The files on the Virtual Tablet Interface installation disks are
  149. compressed and are not usable until expanded. The SETUP.EXE utility
  150. expands the compressed files as it copies them onto your hard disk.
  151. The Windows expand utility and other public domain compression
  152. programs will not work with the installation files since they contain
  153. proprietary compression and error correction codes.
  154.

  156.       REQUIRED DEVICE DRIVERS FOR UTILITIES AND PROGRAMS
  157.       ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

  159. You must install the Windows dynamic link library VTABLET.DLL to install
  160. and use the Virtual Tablet Editor and Virtual Tablet Loader. However,
  161. you do not have to make it the Windows mouse driver unless you intend
  162. to use your digitizer as the Windows mouse.
  163.  
  164.  
  165.            CONFLICTS WITH OTHER DIGITIZER SOFTWARE
  166.            ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
  167.  
  168. SETUP.EXE may not detect other types of digitizer drivers and
  169. software running under Windows or DOS. This will often show up as the
  170. error "Com Port Missing" reported on the 'Status=' line in the
  171. [Virtual Tablet] section of SYSTEM.INI.
  172.  
  173. If you are installing the Virtual Tablet Interface over other
  174. digitizer software, make sure that software is disabled before
  175. installation.  Refer to the software manual for those products and
  176. check your AUTOEXEC.BAT, CONFIG.SYS, WIN.INI and SYSTEM.INI files.

  179.         WINDOWS 3.1 COMPATIBILITY AND FEATURES
  180.         ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
  181.  
  182. VTABLET.DLL requires Windows 3.1 whether specified as the mouse
  183. pointer or not. However, there are some subtle differences in its
  184. behavior depending on how it is loaded...
  185.  
  186. A. If loaded as the mouse pointer, then the virtual tablet will
  187.    function as the mouse input device, execute template pointers and
  188.    allow tracing.
  189.  
  190. B. If loaded as the pen tablet, the virtual tablet will function as the
  191.    pen input device, execute template pointers and allow tracing.
  192.  
  193. C. If loaded as an installable driver, the virtual tablet will function
  194.    as a mouse input device, execute template pointers and tracing.
  195.  
  196. In sum, the Windows driver can do just about anything you want it to
  197. whether you have another input device and how you load it. The best
  198. solution is to load it as the mouse pointer or the pen tablet if you
  199. have Pen Windows. If you have a mouse (and want to use it) but don't
  200. have Pen Windows, try loading it just as an installable driver.
  201.

  203.            REPLACEMENT CALCOMP AFT WINDOWS LIBRARY
  204.            ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
  205.  
  206. Provided on disk or in VtExes.Zip is a replacement Windows library
  207. for the CalComp 33000 digitizers used by some Windows applications
  208. for reading pressure and other Advanced Function Technology (AFT)
  209. values. This file, CAL33WIN.DLL, is automatically installed by the
  210. Setup program if you install the Windows Drivers.
  211.  
  212. You do not need a CalComp tablet to use the library which can provide
  213. additional information to applications for any digitizer supported by
  214. the Virtual Tablet Interface. Note that this replacement file is NOT
  215. compatible with CalComp's other Windows drivers and utilities. You
  216. should remove or disable other CalComp's drivers before installing
  217. this library or the Virtual Tablet Interface.
  218.  
  219.  
  220.              WINDOWS DRIVER CONFIGURATION
  221.              ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
  222.  
  223. VTABLET.DLL provides the interface between Microsoft Windows and the
  224. digitizer. The library may be specified as the Windows mouse driver
  225. or loaded independently by Windows applications and supports the
  226. following functions: mouse driver, Pen Windows driver, template
  227. manager and trace input.
  228.  
  229. Upon loading, the driver looks in the SYSTEM.INI file under the
  230. [Virtual Tablet] heading for the following information which may be
  231. modified by the user (note some information is required):
  232.  
  233. Port=n        Use serial communications port n where n is between 1-4.
  234.               The default is com1 (1).
  235.  
  236. Type=n        Select digitizing tablet n corresponding to the tablet
  237.               identifiers defined in Digitizers Supported. This required
  238.               parameter must be a valid tablet number.
  239.  
  240. Position=n    Sets absolute or relative positioning (absolute=0 or
  241.               relative=1). This value is ignored under Pen Windows and
  242.               defaults to absolute.
  243.  
  244. Reset=n          Disables the driver from resetting the tablet upon
  245.               startup if (n=0). The default is (n=1) which sends a reset
  246.               command to the tablet each time the driver loads.
  247.  
  248. Rate=n          Sets the report rate n where 0=Auto, 1=Slow, 2=Medium and
  249.               2=Fast. The default is Auto (0) which sets the rate to
  250.               Medium under Windows and High under Pen Windows.
  251.  
  252. Rotate=n      Sets the orientation in one of four, clock-wise,
  253.               ninety-degree steps including None (0), right (90), bottom
  254.               (180) and left (270). The default is None (0).
  255.  
  256. Accelerate=n  Sets the acceleration in relative mode where 0=None,
  257.               1=Low, 2=Medium and 3=High. Acceleration is applied
  258.               before Sensitivity and defaults to Low (1).
  259.  
  260. Sensitivity=n Sets the sensitivity in relative mode in 0.10 increments
  261.               between 0.00=Stop and 1.00=One. Sensitivity default to
  262.               0.50 and is applied after Acceleration.
  263.  
  264. Masks=s          Sets button mapping. Changes to this entry should
  265.               only be made from the Control Panel Applet. Deleting
  266.               this entry disables mapping and returns you to normal
  267.               operation.
  268.  
  269. Brushes=s     Sets air brushing. Changes to this entry should only be
  270.               made from the Control Panel Applet. Deleting this entry
  271.               disables air brushing and returns you to normal operation.
  272.  
  273. HorzOffset,   Sets the clipping area. Changes to these entries should
  274. VertOffset,   only be made from the Control Panel Applet. Deleting
  275. HorzExtent,   these entries removes clipping returning you to normal
  276. VertExtent    operation.
  277.  
  278. VTABLET.DLL will fail to load if the configuration information in the
  279. SYSTEM.INI file is incorrect. All errors encountered in loading are
  280. written to the SYSTEM.INI file under the topic [Virtual Tablet] on
  281. the line beginning with 'Status='.  Normal loading sets this entry to
  282. 'Status=OK'.
  283.

  285.           WINDOWS ENHANCED MODE DRIVER INSTALLATION
  286.           ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
  287.  
  288. The enhanced mode Windows driver, VTABLET.386, provides a significant
  289. performance improvement and works with VTABLET.DLL. Setup will
  290. install this driver for you in the [386Enh] section of SYSTEM.INI by
  291. adding the statement 'device={path}VTABLET.386'. This driver
  292. virtualizes the Com port listed under the [Virtual Tablet] section
  293. of SYSTEM.INI and redirects tablet interrupts into VTABLET.DLL
  294. despite how it is loaded.
  295.  
  296. If entries in [Virtual Tablet] are incorrect, VTABLET.386 may not
  297. load (nor should VTABLET.DLL) but cannot output user diagnostic
  298. messages.  The error, after attempting to load VTABLET.DLL, can be
  299. found on the 'Status=' line under [Virtual Tablet] in SYSTEM.INI.

  302.              CONTROL PANEL APPLET
  303.              ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
  304.  
  305. If you have installed VTABLET.DLL as the mouse driver, pen driver or
  306. an installable driver, the Control Panel will display an icon that
  307. can be used to configure the driver.  After selecting it, a dialog
  308. for the virtual tablet is displayed.
  309.  
  310. The Virtual Tablet Applet allows you to configure the Virtual Tablet
  311. Interface Windows device driver for such functions as: digitizer
  312. type, report rate, rotation, button mapping, air brushes, 
  313. sensitivity, acceleration, positioning, interrupts and clipping. In
  314. addition, it provides real-time statistics on how the driver is
  315. performing allowing you to tune or diagnose the driver for a 
  316. particular configuration. If you are not sure how to use dialog
  317. boxes, refer to the Window's User Guide.
  318.

  320.           CHISELED DIALOGS IN THE EDITOR AND LOADER
  321.           ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
  322.  
  323. The Editor and Loader support "chiseled" dialog boxes with the
  324. background set to the Windows button face color. If you have a laptop
  325. or want to disable this feature, add the line "ChiselDialogs=0" to
  326. the [Common] section of VTABLET.INI for both the Editor and Loader.
  327.

  329.        STARTING THE EDITOR IN OTHER THAN A FULL WINDOW
  330.        ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
  331.  
  332. By default, the Editor starts maximized to the full screen size
  333. unless loaded specifically as an icon. To load the Editor normally,
  334. insert 'Maximized=0' under the section [Options] in the configuration
  335. file VTABLET.INI using a text editor or Windows NotePad.
  336.  
  337.   
  338.         UPDATING THE VIRTUAL TABLET INTERFACE
  339.         ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
  340.  
  341. From time to time, updated versions of the Virtual Tablet Interface
  342. will be posted on public bulletin boards such as CompuServe, etc. If
  343. you are a registered user, you may download minor version updates and
  344. install them on your system. Note this only applies to minor, not
  345. major, version updates. You must upgrade major versions directly from
  346. Digitizer Technology for a modest fee.
  347.  
  348. To upgrade your registered version, download the new files to a
  349. temporary directory and run SETUP.EXE from your registered disk, NOT
  350. the downloaded evaluation version of SETUP.EXE. Choose "Update" in
  351. the setup options and then, when prompted, fill in the directory
  352. where the new version files are located.
  353.  
  354. Do not attempt to update drivers and utilities that have not been
  355. previously installed. Install them first from your registered disk
  356. and then update over them as described above. Also, it is not a good
  357. idea to copy the new files to your registered disk and then run
  358. SETUP.EXE.  If you do, and there are any problems with the newer
  359. version, you will be unable to restore the previous version.

  362.                  REMOVING THE VIRTUAL TABLET INTERFACE
  363.                  ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
  364.  
  365. If you need to remove part or all of the installed files from your
  366. system, select Remove instead of Install from within the SETUP.EXE
  367. program. Removing Virtual Tablet Interface files cannot be undone with
  368. DOS 5.0 or other undelete commands. Reinstall the files instead.
  369.  
  370. If you are removing the Virtual Tablet Interface because you are
  371. dissatisfied, please let us know the reasons why and we'll do our
  372. best to correct any problems.
