  7. Macintosh computers which have at least 4 megabytes of memory and a CD ROM

  13. Students are allowed to extract text and graphics from this disc to use in
  14. their own work so long as it is not sold for gain or used outside the

  125. comprehensive data analysis.

  132. Navigation and Information Buttons

  134. A number of navigation buttons are used to help students chart their own 
  135. path through the learning material.

  137. Most sections include at least two routes to the information. Students are 
  138. encouraged to interact with the computer either by using on-screen buttons 
  139. or by clicking on objects within graphics. Technical words concerning the
  140. topic are highlighted in red in the text. Clicking on these provides a 
  141. glossary definition of the word.

  143. The Castle Data Section 
  144.  
  145. As indicated above, the Castle Data section contains a further range of 
  146. resources. The photographs and drawings in the application are available in
  147. database format, to help students and teachers find resources without having
  148. to search for them within the other sections.

  150. The main Castles of the British Isles datafile can be viewed from within the 
  151. presentation, but can also be viewed within either the KEY PLUS or KEYNOTE 
  152. database systems. If these are available, a further range of investigation 
  153. becomes possible.

  155. The Tool Box

  157. This contains 'Find Text', which searches for specific words or letters, and
  158. 'Notepad' which allows users to make notes which can be saved out to disc. 
  159. The 'save' option will automatically be offered when quitting the 
  160. application.

  164. Students can also save out any text and picture resources from the CD ROM.

  170. IDEAS FOR USING THIS APPLICATION

  173. The Teacher's Resources unit within the Castle Data section on the CD ROM 
  174. provides many ideas for classroom use.
  175.  
  176. Worksheets are provided to reinforce both history and IT skills and concepts.
  177. For example, spreadsheet activities are provided to help students make sense 
  178. of the cost of building and running a castle. Other worksheets provide 
  179. activities away from the computer including source material exercises and a 
  180. board game. A classroom ideas database also provides starting points for 
  181. teachers to develop their own activities. The activity sheets are held in a 
  182. directory called ACTSHTS in the RESRCES directory. They are also available
  183. from within the program on the Archimedes.

  185. Access to the Castles of the British Isles database is available in KEY PLUS 
  186. format. Running the datafile in KEY PLUS provides additional fields and 
  187. functionality. For example, students can search for different types of 
  188. castle and plot them onto the map of the British Isles provided on the CD 
  189. ROM. For users with KEY PLUS 3.0, a set of mapping symbols is also 
  190. provided to add extra flair to the finished map. Worksheets within the 
  191. Teacher's Resources unit are provided to help with the use of the datafile 
  192. in Key Plus.

  195. separately. KEY PLUS is recommended for Secondary schools and KEYNOTE for
