- INTRODUCTION INTRODUCTION
-
- Thank you for buying PC-Lock version 2.1. We believe you will
- find it to be an effective and convenient security system for
- your IBM-PC/XT/AT or compatible. Version 1.1 was reviewed in the
- June 23, 1987 issue of PC-Magazine and listed among "The Best of
- the Best Utilities." Version 2.1 provides enhanced security and
- several new features including:
-
- Simplified multi-system installation,
- An administrator password,
- Multiple user passwords,
- Support for large hard disks,
- Support for multiple hard disks,
- Works with the EGA controller/display,
- Ability to prevent user's from breaking out of AUTOEXEC,
- and others described below.
-
-
- WHAT PC-Lock DOES WHAT PC-Lock DOES
-
- After you install PC-Lock you will be asked to enter a password
- each time you boot your computer from your hard disk. Just type
- your password and press return. The boot process will continue
- normally. When you boot from a diskette the system will boot
- normally, but you will not be able to access your hard disk.
-
- Any time after your computer has finished booting from your hard
- disk, you may press the shift key on the left side of your
- keyboard 3 times in succession. This will cause the screen to
- become completely blank. The computer will continue with the
- task it was performing, but will throw away any characters typed
- at the keyboard (including Ctrl-Alt-Del) until you enter your
- password again. The screen and keyboard will then return to
- normal.
-
- PC-Lock provides an administrator password and a maximum of four
- user passwords, allows you to prevent a user from breaking out of
- the AUTOEXEC batch file, and allows a different AUTOEXEC sequence
- for each of the five possible users.
-
- PC-Lock is a software security program and is probably somewhat
- more secure than a dead bolt lock on your front door. A
- sufficiently knowledgeable and determined individual will be able
- to circumvent the system, as indeed any software security system
- can be circumvented. The level of protection is, however,
- sufficient for most purposes. Please note that PC-Lock files are
- encrypted, and will not decrypt themselves if someone is using a
- debugger to find out how they work.

-
- PC-Lock PASSWORDS PC-Lock PASSWORDS
-
- All PC-Lock passwords consist of one to sixteen characters (key-
- strokes). Any key on your keyboard may be used except the return
- key. This allows you to create very obscure passwords. Be sure
- that you remember them!
-

-
-
-
-
-
-
- When entering a password to gain access to your computer, just
- type the password and then press "return". If you make a
- mistake, simply press "return" and re-enter it.
-
- Specific instructions for defining new passwords are displayed on
- the screen whenever you need them.
-
-
- HOW TO INSTALL PC-Lock HOW TO INSTALL PC-Lock
-
- Before installing PC-Lock it is important that you read the
- Warranty Disclaimer shown above. Thank you.
-
- Installation consists of the following easy steps (explained in
- more detail below, also please see the descriptions of the
- utilities mentioned):
-
- 1. Make a copy of your PC-Lock diskette. File the original
- in a safe place and use only the copy.
-
- 2. (Optional) Use the ADMIN utility to place an
- administrator password into the INSTALL program.
-
- 3. Use the INSTALL program to install PC-Lock on each
- computer.
-
- 4. Use the PASSWORD program to define from one to four user
- passwords for each machine.
-
- 5. (Optional) Select additional features.
-
- 6. (Optional) Copy any desired files from the PC-Lock
- diskette to the hard disk.
-
- With the above overview in mind we are ready to begin
- installation. Please make a backup copy of your PC-Lock diskette
- at this time. The next step in the installation process will
- alter one of the files on the diskette, so please do make that
- backup.
-
- If you only want to protect one computer with a single password,
- please skip to the next paragraph. Place your PC-Lock diskette
- in drive A: and type "A:ADMIN" and press "Enter", and follow the
- directions on the screen. After you have entered and verified
- your administrator password, it will be encrypted and placed in
- the file INSTALL.COM on the diskette in drive A:.
-
- Place your PC-LOCK diskette in drive A: of each machine you wish
- to protect and enter A:INSTALL. PC-Lock should tell you that it
- is correctly installed, and that your password is PASSWORD.
- (Note: If you used ADMIN to define an administrator password,
- PASSWORD is the first of the four possible user passwords.)
-
- PC-Lock Version 2.1 - Page 4

-
-
-
-
-
-
-
-
-
-
-
- Now it is time to define one or more user passwords. Enter
- A:PASSWORD. When you are asked to enter your "old" password. You
- may enter PASSWORD, or your administrator password. If you enter
- PASSWORD, you will be able to change the first user password from
- PASSWORD to whatever you wish. If you enter the administrator
- password, you may change any or all of the five possible
- passwords.
-
- If you have an administrator password, you can cause a different
- sequence of AUTOEXEC.BAT commands to be executed for each user.
- Please see the description of the WHO utility for full details.
-
- You can also prevent users from breaking out of the batch file.
- To do this enter BRK-CNTL OFF/P at the DOS prompt. Please see the
- description of the BRK-CNTL utility.
-
- You can prevent users from renaming, deleting, or altering the
- CONFIG.SYS, AUTOEXEC.BAT and PC-Lock device driver files. If by
- entering HIDE at the DOS prompt. Please see the description of
- the HIDE utility.
-
- Finally, copy any desired files from the PC-Lock diskette to
- whatever directory on your hard disk you desire. Descriptions of
- each file are given below so that you can determine which ones
- should be placed on the hard disk. We suggest that only
- PASSWORD.COM and possibly WHO.COM be copied to the hard disk.
-
-
- Using PC-Lock Using PC-Lock
-
- When your system boots from the hard disk, you will be asked to
- enter your password. Any defined password may be entered at this
- point. The system will then boot normally. The booting process
- can be further controlled through use of the BRK-CNTL and WHO
- programs as described below.
-
- If you wish to protect your computer while it is running, simply
- press the shift key on the left side of your keyboard three times
- in succession. The screen(s) will then blank, and the keyboard
- will lock except for password entry. The computer will continue
- with whatever task it was performing when it was locked. The
- system may be unlocked by entering either the administrator
- password, or the password that was used to boot the system. This
- feature, known as the "Lunch-Break" feature, may also be
- automatically activated whenever the keyboard is idle for a
- specified time. Automatic activation is managed via the SET-TIME
- utility described below.
-
- Usage of other features of PC-Lock are described below.

- Your PC-Lock Files Your PC-Lock Files
-
- ADMIN.COM Allows you to place an administrator password into ADMIN.COM
- the INSTALL.COM file. This program is described
- under "Installing PC-Lock" above.
-
-
- INSTALL.COM INSTALL.COM Installs PC-Lock on your computer(s). This
- program is described under "Installing PC-Lock"
- above.
-
-
- PASSWORD.COM PASSWORD.COM Allows a user to change his/her password, and
- allows the system administrator to change any or
- all of the five possible passwords. To use this
- utility, enter PASSWORD at the DOS prompt. You
- will be asked to enter your old password.
-
- If a user password is entered you can then change
- that password.
-
- If the administrator password is entered, you will
- be asked which password you want to change. After
- changing it, you will again be asked which
- password you wish to change. You may then change
- another password, or press the escape key to
- return to DOS.
-
- The changes will be in effect immediately except
- for unlocking the system during Lunch-Break. The
- changes will be effective for all functions after
- you re-boot your computer.
-
-
- UNLOCK.COM UNLOCK.COM Allows access to the hard disk when booting from a
- diskette if you know the administrator password.
- It is included so that you can repair problems on
- the hard disk which prevent booting.
-
- For example, if you accidentally destroy
- COMMAND.COM, DOS will not allow you to boot from
- your hard disk. PC-Lock will not allow you to
- boot from a diskette and get to the hard disk to
- fix the problem.
-
- To use UNLOCK, boot your computer from a diskette.
- Place your PC-Lock diskette in drive A: and enter
- "A:UNLOCK". You will then be asked for your
- password. The administrator password is required
- if one has been defined. When you enter your
- password correctly, you will be informed that PC-
- Lock protection has been suspended. Re-boot from
-
- PC-Lock Version 2.1 - Page 6
-
-
-
-
-
-
-
-
-
-
-
-
- your DOS diskette and you will have access to your
- hard disk. The next time you boot from your hard
- disk, the protection will be re-instated.
-
-
- DESTALL.COM DESTALL.COM Allows you to remove PC-Lock from your computer.
- Please DO NOT attempt to remove PC-Lock by simply
- deleting its files. Doing so does not work,
- though it may appear to.
-
- To use DESTALL enter "DESTALL" at the DOS prompt.
- You will be asked to enter your password. If an
- administrator password has been defined, it must
- be used. After your password is entered
- correctly, you will be informed that PC-Lock has
- been removed from your computer.
-
-
- HIDE.COM HIDE.COM Hides and protects specified files on your hard
- disk from alteration, name change, and deletion.
- If you enter:
-
- HIDE
-
- the files, CONFIG.SYS, AUTOEXEC.BAT, and
- CLEANDSK.DRV (the PC-Lock device driver) will be
- protected. You may also protect other files by
- entering:
-
- HIDE filespec
-
- The filespec may contain wild cards. Protection
- is not in effect when:
-
- 1. No administrator password has been
- assigned, or
-
- 2. The last password entered was the
- administrator's.
-
- UNHIDE.COM UNHIDE.COM Reverses the action of HIDE. This utility only
- works when protection is not in effect.
-
- BRK-CNTL.COM BRK-CNTL.COM Allows the system administrator to prevent a user
- from breaking out of the AUTOEXEC.BAT file during
- system boot.
-
- This may be accomplished by entering:
- BRK-CNTL OFF/P
- at the DOS prompt. "OFF" means that keyboard
- Ctrl-Break and Ctrl-C are to be disabled. (No
- breaks allowed.) The /P means that the change is
-
- PC-Lock Version 2.1 - Page 7
-
-
-
-
-
-
-
-
-
-
-
-
- to be made permanent. Each time the system is
- booted, keyboard break will not work until
- explicitly turned on. This may be done by placing
- the following command at an appropriate point in
- the AUTOEXEC.bat file:
- BRK-CNTL ON
- "ON" means that keyboard breaks are to be enabled.
- Since "/P" was not included, the change is not
- permanent. Breaks will again be disabled when the
- system is re-booted or a "BRK-CNTL OFF" command is
- used.
-
- The /P option will not work while HIDE is in
- effect. (See description of HIDE.COM above.)
-
- WHO.COM WHO.COM Allows the system administrator to have the
- AUTOEXEC.BAT file do different things when
- different users boot the system. The WHO program
- may be used by structuring your AUTOEXEC file as
- follows:
-
- .
- .
- commands common to all users
- .
- .
- WHO
- IF ERRORLEVEL==4 GOTO USER4
- IF ERRORLEVEL==3 GOTO USER3
- IF ERRORLEVEL==2 GOTO USER2
- IF ERRORLEVEL==1 GOTO USER1
- .
- .
- commands to be executed when the
- administrator's password was used.
- .

- :COMMON
- .
- .
- commands common to all users
-
- For more information in the use of "IF" statements
- and "ERRORLEVEL" within batch files, see your DOS
- reference manual's section on BATCH commands.
-
-
- SET-TIME.COM SET-TIME.COM Overcomes problems caused by certain resident
- programs which are not well behaved, as well as
- activating the Lunch-break feature (see "Using PC-
- Lock" above) whenever the keyboard has been idle
- for a specified period.
-
- There are a few resident programs which will
- prevent PC-Lock from recognizing that the leftmost
- shift key has been pressed three consecutive
- times.
-
- If this problem occurs, the SET-TIME program
- should solve the problem. Simply place SET-TIME
- in the AUTOEXEC.BAT file, or enter it at the DOS
- prompt as the last resident utility, or at least
- after the offending resident program.
- If you would like to automatically activate the
- Lunch-Break feature whenever the keyboard has been
- idle for a specified number of minutes, you may
- enter:
- SET-TIME time
- where "time" is the time in minutes. The maximum
- allowed value of "time" is 60. For example, if
- you wish to activate the Lunch-Break feature
- anytime no keys have been depressed for seven
- minutes you would use:
- SET-TIME 7
-
- If "time" is zero, or is not given, the Lunch-
- Break feature is never automatically activated.
- Either of the following two commands will prevent
- automatic activation:
- SET-TIME
- SET-TIME 0
-
- ORIGDISK.COM ORIGDISK.COM Prior to DOS 3.3, DOS provided no support for
- disks larger that 32 megabytes, and there were no
- rules as to how such support should be provided.
- This forced each vendor of large hard disks to
-
- PC-Lock Version 2.1 - Page 9
-
-
-
-
-
-
-
-
-
-
-
-
- design its own method. While it is not possible
- to design PC-Lock to work correctly with all of
- these, it does work with DOS 3.3 and most large
- hard disk systems.
-
- If PC-Lock will not work on a particular system it
- will usually not install at all and tell you that
- it is incompatible. If it does install, but does
- not work, the DESTALL program will remove PC-Lock
- from your computer and should restore it to
- working condition. We say "should" because we
- have found one hard disk system (SPEEDSTOR version
- 1.06) for which DESTALL will not completely
- restore your hard disk. Entering ORIGDISK at the
- DOS prompt will completely restore any hard disk
- system to its original condition. ORIGDISK should
- almost never be needed, but it is included in case
- you do.
