- ABOUT MELODY.EXE
-
- MELODY.EXE is a program from the kit, PIECES, by Another
- Company. With PIECES, you can create just about anything for
- IBM-compatible computing. No programming skill is necessary.
- See end of this file for more information about PIECES.
-
- What It Does
-
- MELODY is for creating sound files for use with the program,
- SOUNDS.EXE which comes with the PIECES suite of programs.
-
- MELODY creates a text file containing one or more lines. Each
- line contains 2 numbers. The first number is the frequency
- of a sound, and the second is the number of milliseconds that
- sound will play.
-
- How To Use It
-
- From the DOS prompt, type MELODY, optionally followed by any
- DOS-legal filename you want to use as the file to store your
- music. If you type MELODY without a filename, you will be
- prompted to type one when the program starts.
-
- The basic principle of operation is to take notes from the
- staff at the bottom of the screen and place them on the top
- staff. You can use mouse or arrow keys to select notes and
- move them. If using a mouse, click the left mouse button to
- select a note, and click it again to place the note on the
- top staff. If using the keyboard, press [Enter] to select and
- place notes. If using keyboard, please note that for faster
- movement than is possible with the arrow keys, you can use
- the number keys with [Num Lock] turned on. [7], [9], [1],
- [3], [Home], [End], [Page Up] and [Page Down] produce
- diagonal movement.
-
- Once notes are placed on the top staff, they will
- automatically jump to the correct position.
-
- Additional Information
-
- See SOUNDS.DOC for more information.
-
- You can create or modify sound files directly if you prefer.
- Use your favorite word processing or text editing program
- which works in standard ASCII mode. If you have Microsoft
- Windows, you'll find the included NOTEPAD program does this
- well. Here's what you have to know to edit sound files:
-
- *Each line in a sound file contains two integers. The first
- is the frequency of the sound to be played in Hertz (cycles
- per second). The allowable range is 18 to 30000. The second
- number is the amount of time to play the note in milliseconds
- (thousandths of a second). The allowable time range is 0 to
- 30000.
-
- *Rests are created by using a frequency of 0.
-
- *Stacatto and regular notes are created by mixing small rests
- (frequency 0) in between sounds.
-
- *Each line must start at the leftmost position on the screen,
- there can be no spaces.
-
- *Each line is independent of other lines.
-
- *There must be no blank lines.
