- Introduction
-
-
- If you have ever used those little sticky back notes,
- or those phone message slips, then Message Machine is for
- you! It is very easy to use and you will be amazed at how
- much clutter it will remove from your desk!
- I started working on this after I realized how much
- business was being lost at our office from lost and
- forgotten phone messages. With Message Machine, messages
- are in the same place every time and it's just as easy to
- enter a message on the computer as it is to write it down.
- You will not have to tell your customers, " I'm sorry,
- I didn't get the message.".
- Message Machine is also great for home use (I use it!).
- Anywhere there is a phone and a computer, Message Machine
- will be a blessing.
-
-
-
-
-
- Installation
-
- Installing Message Machine is easy. Simply unzip the files
- into a directory of your choice ( eg. C:\MESSMACH\ ), then
- from the Program Manager select File/New. Make sure the
- Program Item check box is selected then click on "OK". The
- next dialog box will ask for a description, a command line,
- a working directory, and a shortcut key. The Description
- can be "Message Machine" or whatever you want it to be.
- The command line should be the path you unzipped the files
- to ( eg. C:\MESSMACH\ ) and the MESSMACH.EXE filename.
-
- EXAMPLE: C:\MESSMACH\MESSMACH.EXE
-
- Don't worry about the working directory. In the Shortcut Key
- field, you may put whatever you want to use as a quick way
- of getting to the program when you need it. Your Windows
- manual will help you here if you are unsure what to do.
- Save the changes and an Icon will show up for Message Machine!
- That's about it, now fire it up and try it!
- The best way to use Message Machine is to have it loaded and
- ready to use. To do this (if you don't already know how) click
- on the Message Machine Icon ONCE, just to select it not to run
- the program. Go to the FILE|PROPERTIES... selection on the Program
- Managers menu. In the bottom section you should see a check box
- for "Run minimized". Check this box. Now, move the Message Machine
- Icon to the "Startup" program group, Windows 3.1 creates this
- group when installed. If you have done these things correctly
- Message Machine will load when Windows is started and will be
- loaded as an Icon. When you need it it will be right there waiting
- for you.
-
-
-
-
-
-
- Using Message Machine 1.21 for Windows
-
- Message Machine is very simple and fast, you will be able
- to use it within minutes of installing it.
-
- 1. SETUP:
-
- The first thing you should do once you have Message Machine
- running is setup the users database. The user database
- holds the names of people such as yourself, who will be
- receiving messages. From the main menu click on or select
- the button "SETUP". A dialog will appear and you have a
- choice of things you can do from it. The first thing you
- may want to do is "ADD" the names you will use. When "ADD"
- is selected another box pops up and asks for the name to
- add. If you are using this for home or in a small office
- you may want to only use first names, but you can enter up
- to 35 characters so you are able to use last names if you
- want. The next thing you will need to do is "DELETE" the
- user name "New User". It is there for an example and not
- intended to be used.
- If you have a Hayes compatable modem connected to your
- computer and wish to use it to do the dialing for you, you
- will need to set the Comm Port, Speed, and Dial Init settings.
- The Commport should be easy to figure out, check your computer
- manual if your modem came with your system and your unsure of
- the correct setting. Speed is the fastest rate at which your
- Comm Port/Modem will transmit data. The Dial Init string can
- be different for some systems. The default string is setup
- to turn the modem speaker on (so you can hear when someone
- answers the call) and to dial using the "Touch Tone".
- ATM1DT
- If you do not have Touch Tone service (you have "Pulse" Tone),
- you should edit this to read.....
- ATM1DP
- This will tell your modem to use the "Pulse Tone" instead of
- the "Touch Tone" dialing. Under most conditions you will not
- need to add anything to this line. Check your modem manual if
- you are unsure.
- Now just hit the "OK" button and your user database and
- your modem is setup and ready to be used. You should
- not have to go back to "SETUP" unless you have a new name
- to add or a name to delete.
-
- 2. ENTER A MESSAGE:
-
- Now that you have the users setup, try entering a message.
- Click the "ENTER MESSAGE" button or select it with the TAB
- key and hit enter. You will now be at the Message entry
- box. Users names are listed in the box in the top left hand
- corner of the box. To enter a message to someone make sure
- their name is highlighted and hit the TAB key. That will
- take you to the "Caller Box". Type in the name of whomever
- you want to be the "caller" for the test message and hit
- the TAB key. That brings you to th phone number box. Just
- enter the phone number you want to use for the test message.
-
- Note: Enter the complete number you would dial
- if dialing manualy, for example: for long
- distance calls you may need to add a 1-
- before the area code.
-
- Hit the "TAB" key, now your at the Message text box. Here you
- can type in a message that the "Caller" wanted to leave
- for the "User". This box uses word wrap so you don't have to
- hit the ENTER key to move to the next line! But, the ENTER
- key will move the curserto the next linein the message.
-
- Note: Use the TAB key to move around while
- entering a message. The ENTER key will
- SAVE the message at any time while editing
- a message.
-
- After you have finished the text hit the TAB key to move to
- the check boxes. These check boxes are like what you
- might find on those old style phone message pads. Simply
- hit the TAB key to move through them and select them with
- the SPACEBAR. The next field that you will come to is for
- your name. This is just a convenience for the user, so they
- know who took the message. After you are finished with the
- message hit ENTER or click on "OK" with your mouse. Your
- message is saved and you are returned to the main menu.
-
- 3. READ MESSAGES:
-
- Now lets read the message you entered. Hit the "READ
- MESSAGES" button and you will see a pop-up. It asks you
- for your name. Use the up and down arrow keys to highlight
- your name or click on your name with the mouse. Hit enter
- or click "OK" with the mouse to start reading your messages.
- If there are no messages for you a pop-up will inform you.
- If you have not setup any users you should only see one
- name in the "Name Sort" pop-up. Select "New User" and "OK".
- The first message SHOULD be a message from me to
- "NEW USER". If you try to read the "Next Message" you will
- be informed that there are no more Messages. If you did
- setup a user other than "New User", then after you quit the
- "Read Messages" you will be able to read the message you
- entered as a test message. At any time while reading your
- messages you may reset the messages to the first message,
- or delete a message you are finished reading.

- MORE TO COME!!
-
- I am currently working on ideas for a phone book
- companion for Message Machine. I have heard complaints about
- other phone books and I am working on making mine simple to
- use. This is still in the planning stage right now, I have
- yet to work out the interface. Registered users of Message
- Machine will be offered 1/2 price registration for this
- program when it is released. Any and all suggestions are
- welcome at the support BBS.
