  4. DESCRIPTION
  5.  
  6. This is a demo version of the commercial software package
  7. "The Digital Universe".  It has the following restrictions
  8. and limitations over the registered version:
  9.  
  10. 1.  Stars, galaxies, nebulae, and clusters are only shown
  11.     in a square from 4 to 7 hours right ascension and -15 to
  12.     15 degrees declination.  This roughly covers the region
  13.     occupied by the constellation of Orion, and is visible
  14.     from both the northern and southern hemispheres.
  15.  
  16. 2.  The demo version will not allow you to simulate a view of
  17.     the night sky later than October 15, 1995.
  18.  
  19. 3.  Most of the hypertext encyclopedia of astronomy has been
  20.     removed.  The exceptions, which remain with this demo
  21.     package include:
  22.     - the online help on how to use the software
  23.     - the description and pictures for the Sun
  24.     - the description and pictures for M42 (The Great Orion
  25.       Nebula), M43, M78, IC 434 (background illumination for
  26.       the Horsehead Nebula), and Betelgeuse - objects which
  27.       are located in the region defined by restriction # 1.

  29. For information on how to obtain a registered version of the
  30. software, as well as a fairly comprehensive list of the program's
  31. features, please see the accompanying file entitled "ProductInfo".
  32. In addition to removing these restriction, a 138-page user manual
  33. is provided, along with a version of the executable optimized
  34. for 68020+ CPUs without a math chip (the executables provided
  35. with this demo are compiled for 68000-based machines and
  36. 68020+ CPUs with a math chip).

  39. REQUIREMENTS
  40.  
  41. This demo will run on any Amiga with Workbench 2.04 or greater, at
  42. least 3 megabytes of memory, and approximately 6 megabytes of hard
  43. drive space.  Due to the calculation-intensive nature of this
  44. software, an accelerated Amiga and math chip (FPU) is strongly
  45. recommended, though not required.

  48. INSTALLATION
  49.  
  50. The software is installed with Commodore's standard "Installer"
  51. utility, shipped with later Amigas.  If you do not have this
  52. package, it can be obtained via the Internet on an Aminet FTP
  53. site (such as ftp.wustl.edu) in the "util/misc" directory,
  54. as "Installer-1.25.lzh".
  55.  
  56. "The Digital Universe" requires MUI (Magic User Interface) 2.3 or
  57. later in order to operate.  It can be obtained via the Internet
  58. on an Aminet ftp site (such as ftp.wustl.edu) in the "dev/gui"
  59. directory as "mui23usr.lha" and must be installed before
  60. attempting to use "The Digital Universe".

  62. Then, just click on the DUDemo-Install icon and answer the
  63. questions.  You must do this even if you extracted the archive
  64. where you would like to use it.  In that case, just select an
  65. "in-place" installation.

  68. RUNNING THE PROGRAM
  69.  
  70. To run the program, just double-click on the "DUDemo"
  71. icon.  On some Amigas with 3rd-party graphics boards, the
  72. introduction sequence *may* cause your computer to crash.  If this
  73. is the case, or if you wish to bypass the introduction, click on
  74. the "DUDemoNoIntro" icon instead.

  76. If you wish assistance in using the software, a context-sensitive
  77. help system is built in.  Just place the mouse pointer over the
  78. gadget or window you need help with and press the HELP key.  If
  79. your mouse pointer is over the "backdrop" window (where the stars,
  80. etc. are drawn), general information about using the program is
  81. presented.
